Two Texas coaches stopped by Dallas Episcopal on Monday to visit with fast-rising 2010 defensive tackle prospect Eric Humphrey, whose stock has soared in recent weeks with the release of his senior film. Area recruiter Bruce Chambers, responsible for securing Mike Davis' visit this weekend and continuing communication with Corey Nelson, made the trip along with defensive tackles coach Mike Tolleson. Will Muschamp is expected to visit next week.

The issue for the Longhorns is that Humphrey's visit schedule is now filled up. He took an unofficial visit to TCU last weekend and will take his first official to Oklahoma next weekend. That leaves four official visits left, currently filled by Texas Tech, Colorado, Wake Forest, and Arkansas. For Humphrey to make it to campus in Austin, necessary to receive an offer, he would have to take an unofficial visit or drop one of the four schools planned for future visits -- it's not outside the realm of possibility considering that Humphrey already dropped plans to visit Baylor and substituted another school.

Players like Humphrey

are why Mack’s “fill up the commitment list early” is a tough strategy to justify. Filling half, two-thirds, of the available scholarships makes perfect sense. Begin the indoctrination process early.

At this point UT has, what, 3-5 standing offers out there? They can’t take all of those kids. They have no way to take a “decommit”, like Nelson. And they’re squeezed if an out-of-stater suddenly says yes.

BTW, GoBR: Where would Humphrey fit in. Three DTs already committed. I know we’re desperately short at the position and attritition has eaten us alive the last couple of seasons at DT — but four in the same class? And just two O-linemen with three leaving now and five more after 2010.

by edsp on Dec 8, 2009 12:08 PM CST reply actions

Fit

I think Humphrey could play some defensive end in a 3-4 and be a pass-rushing replacement for a guy like De’Aires Cotton, who projects as more of a gap plugger. In other words, he could be an Aaron Lewis type of guy and I think he’s a definite take because of his combination of size and speed. With how much Houston and Randall got worn down against Texas A&M, I don’t think depth can hurt since it’s so hard to find players at those positions and in the last couple of years a high number of guys have washed out. With the 2009 and 2010 kids, there’s a strong chance that a couple of them don’t make it through the program.

As for offensive linemen, I think that’s a major point of emphasis in the 2011 class, probably more so than even running back. I suspect that the coaches didn’t want too many in the 2010 class because of the number of linemen redshirting in from the 2009 class and because they didn’t want a guy like Evan Washington for whatever reason. Most likely, they weren’t convinced about his ability to play tackle and 2011 will be about finding guys that can play that position, most notably Spencer Drango and then whoever they like from the group of Marcus Hutchins, Taylor Doyle, Josh Cochran, etc.

As for your first comment — it’s a problem, but it’s hard to see anything changing. Basically, the accelerated timetable places an extremely high value on good initial evaluations and accurate projections of where they will be in several years. A tough task, but I think the staff got in on a couple kids like Greg Daniels and Chris Jones who would have been hard to get commitments from had they waited and allowed other schools to get in on their recruitments.

Is Humphrey rated by any of the services?

Don’t see him on Rivals’ state of Texas list; do other services do separate state rankings, or just national lists?

by edsp on Dec 8, 2009 2:23 PM CST up reply actions

IT does.

In the December update he cracked the list at 92, but with his combination of speed and size, he could really be a guy who is top 50 or 60 in the state. For instance, his speed is pretty similar to Tech commit Jackson Richards, who is ranked 52 by IT and plays the defensive end position. I imagine when OB updates the LSR, Humphrey will be on it.

Early recruiting
Mack’s "fill up the commitment list early" is a tough strategy to justify

Agree in most years, but this year I honestly don’t see 1 reach in the current group of commitments.

For all of the complaining recenlty about UT not offering kids earlier than the previous class signing day, I’d actually like to see the entire process moved back, with no offers or commitments until the fall of the sr. year.

by Horncasting on Dec 8, 2009 12:23 PM CST up reply actions

How many scholarships are left?

We have 20 commits, right? Then add several of

Humphrey
Davis
Jeffcoat
Hicks
White
Nelson

Seems like we’re running out of room here.

by CMDR on Dec 8, 2009 12:21 PM CST reply actions

I believe we've been out of room for awhile

just based on the seniors that are leaving. To get the entire current class in we are going to have to have attrition of 3-4 other players. Start adding in some of the guys on your list and the level that it is going to take gets pretty scary.

by Horncasting on Dec 8, 2009 12:27 PM CST up reply actions

And really, what are the odds tht Vaccarro doesn’t melt down and end up in jail for beating the crap out of some pre med student (working his way up the list)… :)

by UT_BKC on Dec 8, 2009 1:17 PM CST up reply actions

There will be transfers, career injuries, legal problems and possibly an early entrant into the draft. Not sure what combination will happen though.

by JohnsonUT on Dec 8, 2009 12:48 PM CST up reply actions

Hoping no legal problems or career-ending injuries

And while I guess early draft entries wouldn’t be the end of the world, but that is probably the type of attrition that would most harm the team’s chances 2010 success.

by burntorangehorn on Dec 8, 2009 12:53 PM CST up reply actions

Sadly, I think we’ve already had that injury: Irby.

DT depth is great. As GoBR said, they don’t all pan out. If we get all 4 can we really assume that more than 2 will really end up contributing that much when you consider how likley it is that someone will not be good enough, someone might not cut off the field, and/or someone might be injured.

by UT_BKC on Dec 8, 2009 1:11 PM CST up reply actions

Earl Thomas

Let’s hope he is not one of the spots we need to fill. He is eligible for the draft, but so far he has been pretty set that he is returning.

by Wrangler86 on Dec 8, 2009 6:40 PM CST up reply actions

Another thing to consider

Early enrollees are flexible. They can count toward their projected class, or can be flexed to the prior years class. So, while there may be a 25 scholarship limit, from a single class, depending on how the prior class went, you can add several more and not hit any NCAA sanctions.

by GoHorns on Dec 8, 2009 1:09 PM CST up reply actions

As someone was saying in another thread, this shouldn't be an issue

However, the total team scholarship limit (85, right?) will be the more immediate constraint.

by burntorangehorn on Dec 8, 2009 1:15 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed

Unless you’re on the coaching staff or on the team, it’s almost impossible to know how the 85 limit projects due to all sorts of attrition.

by GoHorns on Dec 8, 2009 1:23 PM CST up reply actions

Another possible option

Early in the process there was talk that Espinosa would grayshirt, which would free up another schollie for this class.

by Horncasting on Dec 8, 2009 2:05 PM CST up reply actions

Early enrollees

At this point, Adrian White and Reggie Wilson are the two guys I’m pretty sure will be in during the spring. That means that Texas could take each of the guys on the above list and stay around the limit of 25 per class. I imagine there is someone else I’m not aware of at this point who will be in early as well, though it doesn’t seem like as many as last season.

by bigdukesix on Dec 8, 2009 1:20 PM CST reply actions

I like this one. A lot. Mack's got a good thing here.

Maybe in the case of an out-of-stater like Hicks or Alexander or Ricky Williams — guys from way across the country — you could make an exception. But it’s a two-way street: You want a scholly offer from us, at least do us the courtesy of paying us a visit.

by edsp on Dec 8, 2009 1:28 PM CST up reply actions

I have a hard time complaining about Mack’s success and methods in recruiting. I can get upset with his coaching or his staff, but the talent he has brought in makes it difficult to complaing about recruiting.

by UT_BKC on Dec 8, 2009 1:47 PM CST up reply actions

How is that counterproductive?

And I don’t know of any reason to believe that Muschamp would be better at recruiting than Mack has been.

early exits

Realistically, I think we have a shot to land 2 or 3 players between Jeffcoat, Hicks, Davis, White, Nelson and Humphrey.

Reason being is, I think Davis and White are probably interchangeable and you lock down one of those two but not both. Nelson seems like a longshot to me because its so late in the game and he appeared to be a very solid A&M commit. I think we land either Jeffcoat or Hicks, but not both given the competition we have for Jeffcoat and the geographic issues with Hicks.

As far as potential early exits, the guys that are available for evaluation are:
Sam Acho
Tray Allen
Chykie Brown
Curtis Brown
John Chiles
Brandon Collins
Dustin Earnest
John Gold (don’t think he’s on a scholly)
Sherrod Harris
Kyle Hix
Mike Huey
Blaine Irby
Eddie Jones
James Kirkendoll
Vondrell McGee
Britt Mitchell
Steve Moore
Greg Smith
Russell Carter (RS Soph)
Tyrell Higgins (RS Soph)
Ahmard Howard (RS Soph)
Cody Johnson (RS Soph)
Keenan Robinson (RS Soph)
Christian Scott (RS Soph)
Earl Thomas (RS Soph)
Ben Wells (RS Soph)
Fozzy Whitaker (RS Soph)

The only guy that really jumps out as being NFL ready is Earl Thomas. I think there’s a greater than 50/50 chance he leaves. After that, I would think Sam Acho, & Curtis Brown could be NFL guys and Chykie has the potential but hasn’t showed it so this would be a horrible decision (which one could argue he’s prone to). Of these three, Curtis Brown could be the guy that pulls a “Jermichael” because he became a father this year during the bye week and could have financial issues to concern himself with. If he graded out in the 4th round, he might consider it (I would). From what I know about the Achos (private school and my buddy’s family and theirs are close) they are pretty well off and probably don’t have a need for him to jump early.

by BMG on Dec 8, 2009 1:58 PM CST reply actions

i truly believe earl is staying

IMHO – he is too small to be a top 15-20 pick as a safety. Especially with Mays and Berry coming out. He should come back for another year of strength and maturity – and more reps as a cb. He will be an early first rounder in 2011 and a 2nd in 2010. And the difference in guaranteed money is well worth the wait.

by realmccoy on Dec 8, 2009 5:37 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Not if the NFL implements....

…. a rookie salary cap. Besides, he’s no worse than a 42 right now. Most likely he doesn’t have to wait to be a 1st rounder.

Greg Smith For Early Exit

LOL

Seriously though, between the legal problem kids, the academic problem kids, and the potential transfers (is that Payne guy still on the team?) It shouldn’t be too much of a stretch if we take in another commitment or three.

by Tackchevy on Dec 8, 2009 2:07 PM CST reply actions

Payne is a junior

and so would only have one year of eligibility — he could have jumped ship with Webber in the spring, but chose not to. Unlikely that he leaves now.

by GhostofBigRoy on Dec 8, 2009 3:01 PM CST up reply actions

Helluva list, BMG. Lot to think about.

Several of these guys are starters who won’t draw NFL attention (Huey, Hicks, Smith, Kirkendoll).

Collins, Chykie, Earnest, Scott are guys who can help Texas, aren’t NFL-ready; 1-2 could start . . . no reason to leave. No way the coaches push them out.

Thomas has said he’ll be back (but if he wins the Thorpe Award and we beat Alabama . . .)

Others are reasonably important players the coaches certainly want back (Mitchell, Allen and Moore, because the O-line is thin); Mitchell or Allen will probably start.

Some toward the bottom are attrition candidates; I don’t see TE Ian Harris on your list (he may be in the same category as Irby) . . . 1-2 RBs leaving, with Whaley and Shead joining the mix, makes some sense. Hills isn’t on your list, but . . . There are more WRs and TEs than can possibly get playing time the next year or two.

by edsp on Dec 8, 2009 2:13 PM CST reply actions

Greg Smith to NFL? why not?

JK

But there are definitely a lot of guys on this list who I think are probably going to questions their standing in the program like Sherrod Harris, Ben Wells, Vondrell McGee, Blaine Irby.

Ian Harris is a 3rd year sophomore so he’s technically eligible though he’s got no chance obviously. However, isn’t he done careerwise? or was that just Josh Marshall?

Malcolm Williams also redshirted, so he’s eligible. Highly doubtful he’ll garner any NFL interest at this point.

Jeremy Hills is a true Sophomore which would make him a candidate for transferring since he still has a redshirt.

by BMG on Dec 8, 2009 2:39 PM CST reply actions

Marshall done

Harris has the continued neck problems with the stingers, so it’s possible that he could decide that his football career is over. Like I mentioned with Payne above, McGee only has one year of eligibility remaining and unlike Payne he already had a redshirt year, so he would have to transfer to an FBS school. I think he stays. Like Payne, Harris really made the decision last year to stay and he’s the unquestioned back up next year in case something happens to GG, so he’s basically already made the decision to stay. Irby probably wouldn’t made a decision until next fall, though it could be necessary to make it earlier. Wells and Hills seem the most likely candidates for a transfer, along with Brock Fitzhenry and DeSean Hales.

by GhostofBigRoy on Dec 8, 2009 3:03 PM CST up reply actions

I always wanted to see Hales on the field

He was amazing HS and I wanted to see him in action

by Wrangler86 on Dec 8, 2009 6:43 PM CST up reply actions

With a Davis and/or White commitment

I think Fitzhenry and Hales would see the handwriting on the wall with Malcolm Williams and Marquise Goodwin looking to be around for another two years. What about Russell Carter at DE and Ahmard Howard at TE? Both RS sophs seeing little action at positions where logjams are developing.

It will be interesting also to see how they handle Marcus Davis, he looked on his way to contributing substantially next year.

There are a couple of local guys who could potentially grayshirt from a financial aspect, another few who probably couldn’t. Case McCoy possibly. Another Rick Barnes dilemma.

by SpiritOfTheFedora on Dec 8, 2009 10:36 PM CST up reply actions

here's to hoping...

Irby has a Shipley-esque career

And that Muschamp can continue the recruiting success, namely recruiting 4 and 5 star defensive players

…Still sorta pissed off we couldn’t keep dixon — not blaming mack or whomever directly recruited him, but that kid is supposed to be great and safety recruits don’t grow on trees like WR’s

by trueorangeblood on Dec 8, 2009 2:39 PM CST via mobile reply actions

Tony Hills might be a better comparison

since both he and Irby had some fairly serious nerve damage, leading to “drop foot.” Hills was a remarkable comeback story, but he never recovered his speed, a serious problem for Irby, who doesn’t have the option of moving to the offensive line.

As for Dixon, he started hanging out with the wrong people. In my understanding of how Texas deals with recruits, that pretty much made him untouchable and he didn’t exactly notify the coaching staff quickly of his decision. Texas has options at the position and there are a couple of kids in the 2011 class who like the Longhorns who should be good college players, even if they aren’t on the level of Dixon. Yes, it’s a loss, but it’s not really something worth worrying about at this point because there’s no going back.

by GhostofBigRoy on Dec 8, 2009 3:13 PM CST up reply actions

What type of "wrong people"?

I mean, are we talking organized crime, rogue boosters, or people from Oklahoma?

by burntorangehorn on Dec 8, 2009 3:22 PM CST up reply actions

Ha.

No, we’re talking about the Temple running back and his friends.

by GhostofBigRoy on Dec 8, 2009 3:30 PM CST up reply actions

Someone

more closely connected to recruiting than I am called the Temple running back and his friends a “three-ring circus.” There are plenty of rumors out there about what that entails, but the bottom line is that the coaching staff but ties with Dixon when he de-committed and shortly thereafter ended the recruitment of the Temple running back, in large part because he lost all credibility after not showing up when he said he would. So, the actions of the coaching staff may not indicate that simply hanging out with the Temple running back is a dealbreaker, but his actions were a deal breaker and Dixon’s actions around the time of his de-commitment were also a deal breaker. Personally, I would say at this point that association with the Temple running back is pretty much a deal breaker, yes.

by GhostofBigRoy on Dec 8, 2009 4:19 PM CST up reply actions

Auburn certainly contributed to this "three ring circus"

with their big cat weekend, which ended up getting them some NCAA sanctions. Right after that the Temple RB was dragging friends along and things started getting crazy and Dixon flaked out. I think the curse of Mack has already started on them. I think we follow the rule that Mack said Joe P. taught him in regards to fishy recruits—You stay away!!
And, as we see with Humphreys, there is always another big good guy to land.
