Nebraska Fan: Selective Memory

So in another forum I saw reference to the 1994 Orange Bowl between Nebraka & Florida State. In this game, Nebraska was down two and needed a field goal to win. With :08 left (sound familiar), Tommy Frazier completed a pass down field to put them in field goal range. The receiver went down with :02 left, yet the clock ran down to :00. FSU celebrated, even dumping Bobby Bowden with a gatorade shower. The refs got together and correctly reset the clock to :02 - which they do anytime it matters. Nebraska promptly missed the field goal.

Here's video evidence - from the 6:40 mark until 7:00 and then shows the missed field goal towards the end.

Now, this should conclude any further discussion. People really need to study history in this country. Things happened before Al Gore invented the interwebs. How many Nebraska fans went nuts in 1994 when the clock erroneously ran out?

I remember this well.

Believe that was FSU’s first national title . . . they had to sweat out the FG . . . and I recall an announcer saying the Nebraska kicker would never have to buy another drink if he kicked the FG.

Wonder what the kicker’s life is like now?

Awesome find

e-mail this to that clown who said Texas didn’t deserve another shot because on every other play, the clock operator ran the game clock a second or two after an incompletion

by APinAustin on Dec 8, 2009 4:03 PM CST reply actions

One big difference

Florida State doesn’t control the Orange Bowl.

Texas controls the Big 12.

a uncontrollable kick off return

so…how come we couldn’t control that crappy call on our own 1-yard-line?

by MesquiteHorn on Dec 21, 2009 10:46 AM CST up reply actions

it's not going to conclude

anything. this has nothing to do with this year’s game, other than the endings were similar.

Husker fans will be bitching about this until we’re dead. If that bothers you, well, too damned bad.

There's really nothing to complain about

The right call was made and Texas hit a long and difficult field goal to win. Simple as that.

but...

it just makes you look silly.

by UTrumbo on Dec 8, 2009 6:16 PM CST reply actions

Yeah

Just like you looked silly last year when OU went to the CCG when it CLEARLY stated in the rulebook that in a THREE-WAY TIE (yes, Tech tied you and OU), the team higher in the BCS went, and all of you and Mack Brown cried for months about it.

nebraska fans

need to move on. just because you feel it was unfair isnt going to change the outcome quit bitching about it

While most are dreaming of success, winners wake up and work hard to achieve it.

did

I say I felt it was unfair?

what i said was we won’t stop bitching about it. they made the right call. that has nothing to do with what people complain about, does it?

let me clarify this

that one second is a part of football history now. Things like that tend to take on their own life, and this one isn’t any different. I’ll be telling my grandkids how we got screwed, probably, mostly because it’ll be a better story.

That’s who fans are.

Hell, even Mack Brown said as much himself – (post game press conference quote)

Just wanted to know how you think this team would come back with the clock, just your thoughts? COACH BROWN: I think in Lincoln it will be the clock, and in Austin it will be the comeback, that’s about the way it happens in sports. We all like our team. It’s a great championship game. It will be remembered as a classic like Texas and Nebraska seemed to play each time we get together. And that’s only fitting for two of the winningest programs in the history of college football.

What I have to wonder is – why is this bugging you guys so much?

me personally...

..b/c our championship will be tainted in a lot of people’s eyes (not mine of course). Also, we caught grief for a one-second loss last year, and our “bitching”.

by vy til i die on Dec 9, 2009 1:32 AM CST up reply actions

There's a difference between

Complaining and telling the story of the game. The story is that Texas made a bonehead play and after review it clearly showed that there was one second left and Texas made a long and difficult field goal. Complaining asserts that Nebraska was in some way jobbed out of a win and that simply was not the case.

If the roles were reversed

Texas would be bitching just as much.

by hskr4ever on Dec 21, 2009 2:21 AM CST up reply actions

explain how

you were “screwed”

YOUR kicker kicked the ball out of bounds. Thanks for the 15 yards!!
YOUR defender pulled the horse collar. Thanks for the 15 yards!!

If those don’t happen, you win. Channel your whining and getting hosed into your own team for committing those blunders.

Texas got screwed on that drive in the first quarter that set up your first FG. The review of the ball placement totally screwed Texas. No frickin’ way did NU have a first down on that play. NO FRICKIN’ WAY.

How about the final punt return that set up your go-ahead FG – go review the tape for the block in the back and holding infractions that the Huskers got away with. Go ahead, I’ll wait for you. Check your tape. Check it. Go…..

See? I was right, wasn’t I?? Now, stop whining and blame your own team for CHOKING because of your kicker and that defender.

by Go Bevo on Dec 9, 2009 1:21 PM CST up reply actions

You're right about almost everything

Rex Burkhead was on top of other players and never down, thus, he got the extra yard on review that should have been given all along. Plain as day to me in real time, too.

Hadoken!!

Pelinis

The Pelini brothers response is what bugs me the most. They should be fined/suspended for their display. Even most cornhusker fans agree.

by Eskimohorn on Dec 9, 2009 9:10 AM CST reply actions

I believe they should be let off the hook this time.

Pelini went as far as ranking UT #1, so if that’s not sportsmanlike in the end, then what is?

TEXAS FIGHT

by Darklust on Dec 9, 2009 1:18 PM CST up reply actions

Ranking Texas #1 on a largely arbitrary poll

and calling them cheaters doesn’t cancel out. I don’t know if any other Texas fans agree, but calling the team cheaters just doesn’t sit right with me at all. And the #1 vote could be completely arrogance-based, “If this team beat us then they have to be the best” type of thing. You can see it across the board: when a coach loses to a team, they will usually be ranked a bit higher in that coach’s rankings. So no, the high ranking doesn’t do anything to appease the feelings of disgust I have towards the Pelini brothers.

If you're so sure of what it ain't, how about telling us what it am!

by circa1015 on Dec 9, 2009 3:47 PM CST up reply actions

Further apologies/fine

I haven’t heard anything about further apologies or fines on the Pelini brothers. I can handle a “in the heat of the moment” argument and accept an apology, much like Colt accepted the Big XII trophy. And, I don’t care what some fringe Husker fans think, but these coaches represent the Big XII.

by Eskimohorn on Dec 9, 2009 4:46 PM CST up reply actions

Shame

We were getting along with NU fans so well before the game.

by Infield Elephant on Dec 9, 2009 1:55 PM CST reply actions

I'm used to it all by now

Michigan- “you were lucky to win!”
Ohio State on the road- “you were lucky to win!”
USC- “enjoy your lucky win but you’re not the better team!”
Ohio State in the Fiesta- “We were screwed!!!”
Nebraska- “We were screwed!”

Other fans can bitch and claim conspiracy all they want but the simple fact of the matter is that Texas doesn’t stop playing until the ref says it’s over. Vince and Colt are used to having to win on the final drive of the game so either stop them or deal with the results.

by seth78 on Dec 9, 2009 7:56 PM CST reply actions

Can I ask you all — or y'all — a question?

If the roles had been reversed — if Nebraska had been on offense and Zac Lee had thrown the ball away and the clock had run out — would the officials have put 1 second back on the clock for us? No. Why? because we don’t run the conference.

by hskr4ever on Dec 20, 2009 10:41 PM CST reply actions

I seem to remember

NU getting several questionable calls that game. We can go through the litany if you want.

Bottom line, I’m telling you, no one is anti-Nebraska in the Big XII. You guys bring a ton of tradition and your fans are thought of as classy and great. I don’t know why you keep going off on this jag.

by tblog123 on Dec 21, 2009 12:06 PM CST up reply actions

Why? I'll tell you why.

No non-qualifiers, an extra game (CCG) to put national championship hopes in jeopardy, league offices moved to Dallas, no Big 12 Network (blocked by Texas so it could start its own. Now you want to move the CCG permanently to DALLAS. You’ve gotten your way on every issue (save the tiebreaker last year), and we’re sick of it.

Plus your volleyball team is #2, your football team is #2, your men’s basketball team is #2, your baseball, your softball team, your women’s basketball … ahhhhhhhhh! I’m sick of seeing burnt orange everyway. To have all those teams up there, you’ve got to be doning something illegal.

by hskr4ever on Dec 21, 2009 3:01 PM CST up reply actions

I'm going to try to talk you down on some of those points...
an extra game (CCG) to put national championship hopes in jeopardy

Mack Brown has spoken out numerous times against that extra game. The Big XII doesn’t listen to us either, they want to make money.

league offices moved to Dallas

Maybe it’s just a big city near the Big XII’s “center of gravity”. If they had moved it to Austin I’d give you that one.

ahhhhhhhhh! I’m sick of seeing burnt orange everyway.

Come on, buddy. You’re the one hanging out on UT blogs talking to alums and fans. No one’s forcing your hand on that.

As for non-qualifiers, I could be wrong, but I think many conferences do that. And, okay, you seem to have a point about the Big XII network. I wish we had that network, too.

by tblog123 on Dec 21, 2009 3:17 PM CST up reply actions

Actually, that last part was said tongue in cheek

I know, I know. Envy is one the seven deadly sins. I’m dead as charged.

by hskr4ever on Dec 21, 2009 3:40 PM CST up reply actions

As much as I hate to admit it

This conference is probably better off financially when it’s biggest money maker — Texas — is doing well in athletes.

It’s kind of like MLB. They say MLB does the best when it’s biggest draw — the Yankees — are winning. It’s kind of the same thing with the Big 12.

by hskr4ever on Dec 21, 2009 3:48 PM CST up reply actions

"Maybe it’s just a big city near the Big XII’s "center of gravity". If they had moved it to Austin I’d give you that one."

I think the big problem is when the conference originally started, we were told the league would be an expansion of the Big 8. So we assumed that the same rules would apply — the four Texas schools would come in accepting our bylaws.

Then it was changed to a merger and when the votes came out, most of them were 11-1, with Texas on the 11 and Nebraska being the 1. Put yourself on our side of the fence for a few seconds, and I think you can see where our paranoia stems.
