Trovon Reed/Seastrunk a package deal?

So I was reading on a recruiting service that these 2 players are determined to end up playing college ball together.  From what I understand Reed is going to be at Texas' first junior days and will be offered a scholarship so it doesn't sound as if this will be any sort of an obstacle for Texas to overcome if these 2 decide that Texas is the school that they want to attend and play football at.

My question, however, is what all of you BONers out there think about this concept in general.... (In this instance it seems these 2 are players who stand strongly on their own without needing the other to garner a scholarship offer) But what if it involves an all-everything player and his buddy who doesn't deserve a spot on the university of Texas roster?  Do you throw in an offer for his buddy as well to try and land the big fish or tell the kid there's no room for his pal?

...Already looking forward to the 2010 class taking shape in the coming week(s)

If the player on the + side of the package is the #1 rb in the country, yes....

we can give his buddy who isn’t good a scholarship…..no worries at all. There are plenty of scholarships to go around and if that’s what it takes to land a bad ace, rb, then yeah.
However, these two are both bad asses, like you noted.

I would say yes.

Hopefully we can land both is all I hope for!

I say yes....

What are the chances that the extra scholarship goes to a difference maker on the field.

Regardless Reed is a good player from what I have read/heard about him.

there are many instances of schools offering players on the teams of the superstars in hopes of enticing their teammate to their school. happens all the time.

personally i think if it’s a guarantee, then yes, but we hsould not be making a habit out of offering friends of superstars in the offchance hope that the star will come to texas.

I Don't Think Mack Would Do This

When we signed M.Griffin we did not give his brother a scholarship. He walked on and won a scholarship and ended up having a stellar carrer as a Longhorn.

Both players would have to considered Div I prospects for us to do it.

On the other hand Baylor just hired a players coach to get him to committ to them.

really?

Do you have a link for that? Didn’t they do that in basketball too?

Sorry

I should have clarified that it was a basketball recruit whose coach was hired by Baylor.

I'm opposed to a package

deal, as I’m opposed to all recruiting “deals.” Lots more potential blowback than gain, in my view. Every prospect should be handled on an individual basis. I’m pretty sure Mack Brown is opposed to deals . . .

Anybody remember the 1998 Texas City signings? Mack was a few weeks on the job and signed four teammates from Texas City state championship team as part of his first class. Ervis Hill, CB . . . Everick Ralls, LB . . . Tyrone Jones, LB . . . Jermain Anderson, DE . . . I don’t recall the players making a huge impact. Back then, Mack needed a recruiting toehold, and maybe these signings helped him in that regard.

Since he’s never done anything like that since . . .

Tyrone Jones had a fairly decent career, and while my memory is a little fuzzy, I think Rawls did as well, at least for a season or two. I don’t remember seeing Hill or Anderson on the field much, if at all.

Not unusual unless he's a dork...

If one of the players isn’t quite high D-1 status, they often try to push walking on. That’s really done with permission now. It’s also a means to channel a given number of “legacy” players who would never be given scholarships, which often solves some thorny problems.

Two for one were once more common. They seem to be becoming less so, now. If it is a deal-maker for a #1 RB, no problem.

I know of a specific deal that brought three for two in baseball. One became the HR record holder, the other a fine pitcher. The third did make the field on occasion and was a good back-up. This was back in the day…and the coach came, too. He wanted some of his players on his team from South San.

Teach his buddy to be your long snapper

Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. If they get mad, you're a mile away AND you have their shoes.

If they are pushing for a package deal

wouldn’t they two players in question take their recruiting trips, camps, or in this case, Junior Day Visit together?

by jrod23mc on Feb 2, 2009 7:18 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

why?

Anyway, they’re not “pushing for a package deal”, they’ve merely said that they’d like to play together.
