Kirk Bohls reports that the Texas-Texas Tech game will be swapped with the UCF game, moving the contest with the Red Raiders up from November 7th to September 19th. The switch is being made to allow ESPN to broadcast the game nationally at 7 p.m.

I like it

Benefits are twofold: gets us early season national exposure, and makes the midseason Big 12 gauntlet a bit less strenuous.

Plus, Tech will still be in the process of putting their new pieces together and won’t have had any time to get in a groove the way they did last year.

new schedule sounds great but

I am hoping this means a GameDay in Austin, but this I believe is also the date of Tennessee-Florida in The Swamp. I assume they will go there – especially after the Meyer-Kiffin hype gets going. Not to mentionthat Florida stole our National Championship 1 month ago. I don’t think CBS has a television window to go against the Tech game in primetime- so that will be nice.
It will be nice to play Tech earlier in the season as they are breaking in a new QB. Payback time on national TV – priceless.

Another cross-country flight after Gameday to the primetime game.

by jc25 on Feb 10, 2009 2:44 PM CST up reply actions

Yes, but

That Texas/Tech game last year was possibly the best game of the year, especially when you consider what was on the line and how it affected the MNC landscape. I’ll bet they play they are in Austin and play that game up for all it is worth.

Not to mention that the Tenn/UF game will probably be on CBS, providing more incentive for ESPN to do gameday at the UT game they are actually airing.

by Horncasting on Feb 10, 2009 4:47 PM CST up reply actions

If Tennessee chokes in an early game,,,,, not unlikely...

And Tech undefeated, Gameday might very well be in Austin.

by the1austin on Feb 10, 2009 5:02 PM CST up reply actions

that's wild

When was the last time Texas did something like this, if ever? It gives us a nice primer game before OU, which I suppose is Mack’s way of overcoming the weak OOC slate. And I do like the reprieve it gives us after Ok State and before Baylor/Kansas. We’ll see if it pays off.

by jc25 on Feb 10, 2009 2:43 PM CST reply actions

Missouri@Texas, season opener in 96

or as most of you remember it, the “rain game.”

But I think that was less about television and more about kicking off the Inaugural season of the Big XII.

It’s an interesting move on UT’s part and no doubt was the result of a big time plea from ESPN who probably saw a dearth of decent match-ups on the slate that weekend (or at least ones they had the rights to televise). My guess is they learned first-hand the benefits of what seemed like the “Big XII Game of the Week” every weekend last season and when you have one big game of national interest to promote, it probably acts like an anchor for all the other shows like GameDay and Around the Horn that hype said contest (sort of like the evening news following a major sporting event always does much better in the ratings than its competition).

Hard to know if it’s a good deal for us unitl we get closer to the actual date, but I like the benefits Big Tex mentioned above. And if Tech is rebuilding next year, the pundits and voters won’t know it for sure until later that season and with Tech still living off the equity they built up last season, they’ll probably still be highly ranked coming into Austin on 9/19.

And at the very least, September got a lot less boring for us.

Be nobody but yourself in a world that desperately wants you to be like everybody else.

Unrelated to this game, but Big 12 nonetheless

Saw on college football live that Mizzou and Nebraska moved their matchup to Thursday night, Oct 8, from Sat, Oct 3, for ESPN. More primetime exposure for the conference, even though it will be no blockbuster. But hey, it’s better than a mid-major game.

by BigTexBD on Feb 10, 2009 2:47 PM CST reply actions

MiZZOU and Nebraska on a Thursday

Beats the hell out of some weak Big East showdown of Rutgers and Louisville or USF. I hope we avoid the Thursday night game, though, they seem to be upset-ridden (see USC among others).

Downside...

is that our end of the year schedule looks weaker now – and we know all too well now that it’s the end of the year games that count the most.

by TXinDC on Feb 10, 2009 2:48 PM CST reply actions

Win them all...

… leave no doubt! We win every game big and we will be playing for it all in the Rose Bowl. I am so tired of schedule strength algorithms…

by BSnyder on Feb 10, 2009 2:55 PM CST up reply actions

Agree 100%

I believe that our OOC slate is so weak that the only way we go is if we are undefeated. The Big XII should still be the second best conference nationally – so no way do they keep an undefeated Texas team out.

by realmccoy on Feb 10, 2009 5:36 PM CST up reply actions

Schedule

Based on our OOC schedule next year, we must assume that no losses are required to get to the NCG.

I like this move. Even though Tech does not have all the weapons they had this past year, I never discount a Leach team. Hopefully, a tougher game before OU will help instead of all the patsies we will be playing.

by texascfo on Feb 10, 2009 2:56 PM CST reply actions

Interesting that ........

……Mack wasn’t willing to move the UCF game ( at the suggestion of ESPN ) to substantially improve the OOC by adding a game with Wisconsin. No hesitation at all when approached about moving it for a Texas Tech game he’ll have to play regardless. More evidence of the obvious.

If the winner of USC vs.OhioState and Florida go undefeated, then winning them all won’t be enough with this feather-soft OOC schedule.
4-8 La-Monroe
4-8 Wyoming
5-7 UTEP
4-8 UCF

Prior to UT going to Columbus in 2005 Mack Brown said, “We (current Texas administration) didn’t schedule this game and we don’t want this game. This was done 10 years ago and if we could get out of it, we would.”

Ebay will get lots of business from my fellow Texas Longhorn season ticket holders.

Yes.
If the winner of USC vs.OhioState and Florida go undefeated,

And we won’t have a leg to stand on unless Oklahoma State actually beats somebody this year and MiZZOU or Tech can stay in the Top 25. To be fair, though, Wisconsin also backed out of the Texas game. They were unwilling to lose a home game (as was Texas). I don’t think the date was the deciding factor, it was losing a home game this coming season.

Nebraska On Way Up

We will beat them in the Big XII championship while OSU and USC sit with thumbs planted firmly in posterior.

Don't hate 'cause you can't duplicate.

by PrimeTime2012 on Feb 10, 2009 5:42 PM CST up reply actions

You won't have to worry about that

If that doomsday scenario does occur it will be Texas vs. Florida for the national title while USC gets a rematch with Ohio State in the Rose Bowl. You guys will start the season ranked number two and unless USC goes and pummels everybody there is no way they will jump you. Also, Oklahoma, in all likelihood, will finish 11-1 with Oklahoma State being probably 10-2 or 9-3, along with Nebraska being 10-2/9-3 heading into the Big 12 title game. There is no way you guys will get left out if that happens. No way.

Don't hate 'cause you can't duplicate.

by PrimeTime2012 on Feb 10, 2009 5:44 PM CST up reply actions

I think this scenario is

very unlikely to happen. But I find it very likely that a 0-loss USC passes a 0-loss Texas team. That out of conference schedule looks a lot like Auburn’s circa 2004.

Even though USC will have one less game, they’ll have more road games (6 to 5), more BCS games (11 to 9) and the same amount of conference games (9). USC will have most likely played 3 top 25 teams on the road (some combination of Cal, Oregon, Ohio State, or Notre Dame). Texas might only have 3 top 25 games period (some combination of Oklahoma, OSU, Tech, or Big XII North winner).

by DoubleB on Feb 10, 2009 6:23 PM CST up reply actions

The problem with that is

Auburn started that season ranked out of the top 10 and OU and ’SC were both ranked in the top 5. Texas is most likely going to start the season ranked at number two. There will also be sentiment for Texas to be in the title game because of what happened last year. There was no sentiment for Auburn except that they were underachievers the previous year.

I do think the scenario is unlikely to happen but boy do I wish for it. It would be the ultimate doomsday scenario. At least in 2004 you had an argument as to why Auburn should have been left out. You won’t have one if it happens this time. How can you choose between the teams that started the season ranked 1,2 and 4/5 respectively? You can’t. You can’t leave out the defending national champs. You can’t leave out an ‘SC team that has the best big game rep in the country. You can’t leave out a Texas team that got jobbed the previous year and also wins big games.

Don't hate 'cause you can't duplicate.

by PrimeTime2012 on Feb 10, 2009 6:39 PM CST up reply actions

Fair point

Fair point on Auburn being off everyone’s radar screen to start that season. Of course, Bama was off everyone’s screens to start this year and used two big wins (opener against Clemson and at Georgia) to really move up quickly. Auburn’s non-conference schedule didn’t give them that opportunity.

I don’t see how the argument in 2004 is different from this hypothetical one: Three teams are undefeated. One of them is getting screwed. I think it would be Texas based on that shit non-conference schedule and a Big XII that doesn’t look as good (on paper) as it did last year (Tech and Mizzou should be down with little to replace them).

by DoubleB on Feb 10, 2009 8:12 PM CST up reply actions

There is no problem...

….with my scenario. Where the heck do you expect the winner of a 2nd week matchup of Top-6 programs (USC vs. OhioState) to wind up in the rankings??

We should have seized the opportunity to gain potential control of our own destiny! Trying to defend an OOC schedule of 4-8 La-Monroe, 4-8 Wyoming, 5-7 UTEP and 4-8 UCF will be impossible. A game with Wisconsin would have given us a bit of powder to fire.

This is good for you guys

The one thing that I like about the Big 12 is all their conference games, for the most part, start after all the teams play their four non-conference games. Their is a uniformity to the schedule. It kind of messes that up. For that, I’m not a huge fan of. I prefer all the teams to start Big 12 play at the same time.

From a team perspective this helps out Texas tremendously. Texas will be fresh coming off putting beat downs on the likes of Louisiana Monroe and Wyoming and the starters will be rested. Also, Tech will still be looking for its identity offensively and as usual their defense will be horrific. Put up 50 on the board right now. This also sets you guys up in the long run for an undefeated season. First 5 games should be Ws, beat OU and OSU and it is smooth sailing all the way until the Big 12 Championship. The second half of the schedule won’t be so loaded as it was last year and with Tech gone it will be even easier. You guys will have a nice rest coming off the Oklahoma State game against UCF.

Don't hate 'cause you can't duplicate.

WAY TO SCREW MY WEDDING

I specifically scheduled it on a day where we faced token opposition, now it’s a conference game and a revenge game. The downside of flex scheduling.

A friend of mine...

and Florida State grad got married on the same day as the FSU-Miami game (back when both were legitimate national title contenders). The bride ended getting pretty upset that all the men at the reception were crowded around a TV.

What made it bad for me was that it was also the same day as the OU game :(

It's not just the wedding you have to worry about...

You’ve also got an anniversary that falls on the same date year after year after year…

yeah but it won’t be on a Saturday again until 2015. And it will never fall near OU or A&M

I'm happy we will get Tech before their new QB Potts has been broken in ....

And anything that breaks up another mid-season gauntlet like we had last year is a good thing. I wonder if Mike Leach would have signed his contract by then.

by the1austin on Feb 10, 2009 4:00 PM CST reply actions

Excellent, All Around...

TTech might have had a prayer later in the year… No more. Leach needs to ink a deal before he gets embarassed next year, a la Jason Garrett

by Tackchevy on Feb 10, 2009 4:55 PM CST reply actions

You guys......

……..crack me up! Mike Leach has received exponentially more from Texas Tech than did Mack from N.Carolina. Leach actually delivered results, including no losing seasons. In Mike Leach’s first 9 seasons as a HC, he’s produced a record of 76-39. Mack’s 10 (not 9) seasons at N.Carolina produced a record of 69-46-1, with consecutive 1-win seasons. Leach, in his 10th season, will make far more than Mack made in his 1st season at UT (his 15th overall).

Hurry up Will, let’s sign some nationally prominant OOC opponents. The well has been dry long enough!

Interesting

What is Leach’s salary this year divided by the average BCS coaches salary compared to Mac’s salary in 1998 divided by the average BCS coaches salary? Otherwise you are really comparing apples to oranges.

by Wells on Feb 10, 2009 9:58 PM CST up reply actions

Agree, a $3 million a year coach in 1998 was absolutely unheard of.

I remember when Stoops passed $2 million and it wasn’t that long ago. Now, Leach is making like 2.5 a year, that is right around 4th in this conference whereas in ’98 he would have been the Nick Saban of that era.

by the1austin on Feb 10, 2009 10:37 PM CST up reply actions

I just....

…….giggle when exageration is used to falsely defend a cause. Mike Leach made $1.8million last season. Not some fairyland $2.5.

While Leach is bringing down Top-25 compensation, Mack wasn’t making even median money at N.Carolina. Good try Wells.

I was refering to this
Leach, in his 10th season, will make far more than Mack made in his 1st season at UT (his 15th overall).

So good try with your circular talk, but you missed your own point.

by Wells on Feb 11, 2009 5:06 PM CST up reply actions

I was ....

…..referring to the1austin’s claim of $2.5million for Leach.

And yes, you did miss the point entirely.

Leach’s 10th season as a HC will earn a salary far greater than Mack’s initial at Texas.
