NYT Recaps Kirkpatrick's Signing
This is so ridiculous. I can't believe he had a two year old kid. Most of y'all probably knew that. But wow, just ridiculous. I had no idea.
http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2009/02/05/sports/0205SIGN_index.html
I'm not sure why these kids need to make it such a big deal. Why is the NYT covering another recruiting that didn't sign with us. No big deal. I'm glad we didn't get him.
For the article:

Wow. This Thayer Evans really hates us.

My reaction
My initial reaction is that Evans seemed to clean this one up a little bit, although he did throw in a “rocking party” blurb. To his credit, he did mention that he went to a party while at Alabama.
Cheesehorn: Are you glad we didn’t get him because he has a 2 year old kid?

um..
I don’t see why you’re glad we didn’t get him b/c of his kid. I know he’s young, but he would have been a great addition. If you said you were glad he didn’t sign b/c of his antics, I could understand, but not his kid.
I know Quan is older, but doesn’t he have 2/3 kids?

Your reply is to Cheesehorn, correct?
I never said I was glad we didn’t get him because of a kid.

One thing...
I’m not sure why these kids need to make it such a big deal.
The athletes did not make this process so ridiculous. In fact, they are the only ones who aren’t to blame. We post everything we can about these kids from their freshman or sophomore year around here. ESPN televises Signing Day. Recruiting has become an absolutely ridiculous business, but don’t criticize the 18 year old kids who have Facebook Fan Sites dedicated to them, NYT reporters calling them, coaches flying them in to hold " mock press conferences" and other recruiting ploys. Some schools cancel classes on signing day! Teachers ask for autographs from their students at the high school level. How can we be surprised when some of these kids get cocky and arrogant?

J. Finley has...
…4 kids.
When Kirkpatrick was asked why Texas didn’t have enough “Swagga”, he turned into mushmouth and I couldn’t understand a fucking word he said until the very last part where he said “…just showing off” and then said some complimentary things about Texas.
What makes me laugh is the guy can hardly speak english. He grew up in the USA attending public schools and I can’t understand a fucking word he is saying!!!!
When asked about the benefits of playing on the same team as Julio Jones, his response was something along the lines of: “Everybody with me and in this room knows I ain’t afraid of Julio.” Fucking brain surgeon doesn’t realize they are on the same team.
Kids do this press conference and the hat bullshit for one reason and one reason only……..because adults allow them to.

Let’s clarify: most PEOPLE involved in this process are ridiculous. The kids are no different. They’re just younger, so we like to shake our fists at those whippersnappers because we like to pretend people of our own generation aren’t just as dumb and out to lunch.

Have these kids heard of rubbers?
Call me old fashioned but is not cool to use condoms these days? Am I missing something here. Go to the local grocery and get some condoms it ain’t to hard and the girl will know that you care. I’m not saying to be abstinent until marriage but use a rubber pal. I know these kids aren’t doing planned parent hood because from the looks of it this kid has trouble reading much less knowing what planned parenthood is.
Don't hate 'cause you can't duplicate.

Listen
Listen chief I’m 20 years old pal and the sheep fucking thing is real cute.
Actually him going on national TV and saying a hat doesn’t have any swagga does give me the right to judge. When you do bullshit like that you open the window. Also, it seems like he isn’t even man enough to take care of his own kid. He said he wants to be closer to his son. Shouldn’t you be around your son all the time? I don’t know, but I think thats what being a father is. What being a father is a bad thing these days. I guess he is a baby daddy and has a baby momma. Thats not judging its called common sense abc.
Don't hate 'cause you can't duplicate.

Enough
You don’t know anything about Dre Kirkpatrick or the circumstances surrounding his fatherhood. Stop it.
And if you feel the need to debate this topic as a general concept, let me just say now this won’t be the site to do it.

Grow a pair
As usually mister PB being politically correct. Why don’t you man up and take a stand on something? Anybody with half a brain can figure out his situation. I’m sorry for using common sense and watching Maury. If common sense is a crime then I am guilty as charged. Grow a pair PB and man up. What is wrong with calling a guy out who wasn’t responsible and, unless he makes it to the NFL, is going to put his child at a disadvantage. Sorry for being politically incorrect, but I speak da truth baby.
Bring on the Aggie jokes. I can’t wait.

Come to think of it, dhab would fit in quite nicely in aggieland, except for that still being in high school thing.

He actually does go to A&M now, which is funny in and of itself.
I slacked off though, definitely. I knew he went to A&M, but I never put 2 and 2 together, Probably because he didn’t break out his somewhat paradoxical love of racism and terrible white boy gangsta talk until just now.

Dang man
Of all the things to incur PB’s wrath over, you choose a high school kid’s immaturity and birth control instead of the multitude of Aggie jokes we have said here as well as the jabs we’ve made towards the football program?
Shrug.

Hmm... I didn't think it was that bad
To CheeseHorn’s original point, while I agree it is a bit suspect that Evans chose to write about a recruit that ultimately didn’t choose Texas, I think he did a better job of doing his homework. If anything, it lessened my dislike for Kirkpatrick knowing how close he came to choosing us, even if he “ain’t too bright”.
Speaking of stupid, I’m curious how much $$$ Saban would be on the hook for if a 5-star recruit rolled an ATV while on his property. Seems like a retard move from a liability standpoint.
by Jonny Horn on Feb 10, 2009 8:09 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I was curious about the ATV liability.
It seems wild, but maybe the coach could rely on a release form to save him. If a recruit were to get seriously injured, would the school be able to revoke his offer?
by horns129 on Feb 10, 2009 10:32 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
No
way a release form would stand, it would torn to shreds in any court room. Saban will be held 100% liable if a recruit injured themselves while visiting his property (insurance guy talking here).

Yeah, that was a big maybe.
I didn’t really think it would hold up in court.

Wow... that escalated quickly...
No, I wasn’t saying the fact that he had a 2 year old kid was ridiculous (even though that means he fathered him at the age of 15 or 16), but the entire drawn out process. But I don’t like how these recruits parade around like they’ve done something notable. They haven’t, and that’s what bothers me.

'Bama fan's take
obviously I’m a tad biased as I am thrilled about Dre wearing crimson but I’d like to throw in my perspective.
For what its worth, Dre appeared on the Paul Finebaum radio show on NSD and was very open about the fact that his son played a role in his decision. Its unfortunate that such a young man is a father, but hey there it is, its not like he can go back an undo anything. I look at this way, he could’ve skipped town to Texas and left the mother alone with the burden of taking care of this kid (sans occasional visits home) but he didn’t. You gotta respect that on some level. He made an immature move getting a girl pregnant at that age but he is at least showing maturity now by stepping up and saying “hey, I have other people (my son and his mother) to think about in this decision besides myself.” When so many young men in this same situation don’t do the right thing, or deny certain things from begining, it says something for the fact that he is at least taking some responsibility here. If his career goes as I’m sure we all hope, and he is playing on Sundays in the near future, he will be able to provide for his son on a level that most of us will never know. And lets be honest here, Dre isn’t the only teenager to get a girl pregnant. He isn’t the only college football player to do it either. I’m not justifying it, I think its wrong, I think he made a mistake, but its done. At least he’s being a man about it now. Cut the kid some slack.

Said it better than I could have.
I question a guy who knocks up a gal while a young teenager, but he gains back something when he shows a commitment to being a father to his kid(s). Being at a school located closer to his kid will help.
I’m not knocking him for having a kid. I’m knocking him for the dumb theatrics at the signing.

I don't...
…“question a guy who knocks up a gal while a young teenager”.
Sometimes shit happens and teenagers do stupid things. I question his parents about not educating him well enough to use a rubber. And that is an assumption on my part, his parents may have taught him well, but as a 16 or 17 year old, you get caught up in the moment and boom…
I agree about his dumb theatrics.
