Texas Explodes For 99, Trounces OSU
This is your post-game celebration thread. Full game review is forthcoming...
- Five (!) Longhorns finished with 10+ points -- Abrams (20), James (19), Atchley (14), Johnson (12), and Balbay (10).
- Balbay started for Connor and finished with 7 assists on the night; Mason chipped in 6 more dimes, while the 'Horns as a team had 19 assists on 33 made field goals.
- Atchley: 14 points on 4-6 shooting, including 2-4 from downtown. Breakthrough? Let's hope so. We've desperately needed him to be a 10-15 PPG scorer.
- Texas was aggressive offensively and got to the free throw line 31 times -- outstanding. They made 26 -- even more outstanding.
- More in the full game review, but for now, a huge sigh of relief, a smile, and some... some actual hope. Texas needed this. Texas fans needed this.

your schtick recently with Harrison Smith disgusts me
to go from proclaiming that the team sucks, that Justin Mason sucks, and that Harrison Smith is God….to now denouncing the kid and saying he needs to transfer…
Look. Harrison Smith is a great kid. He’s obviously not an elite level basketball talent. He’s probably barely an average Division I player. But he’s been in the program and worked his ass off for the program for 3 years. And he’s never complained. He’s busted his ass in practice to help this team get better.
I just think its disgraceful for us as Longhorn fans to so casually debate the worth of a kid who has done nothing but represent the University and our program in an honorable fashion. He doesnt get into off-the-court trouble. He doesnt complain about his status as the last man on the bench. And he genuinely loves being a Longhorn.
I think to ask him to transfer after the season, before his senior year, would be unbelievably disrespectful. And I would lose all respect for our program if that happens to be the case.
Since when did it become okay to ridicule a current Longhorn athlete?

Disgust
is a strong word. Not that I completely disagree with you, the shtick is getting tired, but dang.
yeah, well...
sometimes a good swift kick in the seat of the pants is required to get the message delivered to the brain.
Very gratifying to watch
The announcers kept saying that we were only a few last second shots away from being 8-1. That’s a little more positive than most of us have been over the past 10 days, but a nice perspective. On the other hand, OSU is not a good defensive team. At least we can win a home game that we’re supposed to win. Hopefully, the momentum continues.
The only bad thing about tonight was that they did not get to 100
Very good game on both sides of the ball. This is what we needed to get going, this is the team that could be a 4 seed!

Game Review tomorrow
Very satisfying step in the right direction. This was exactly what the Longhorns needed: a clean, complete game where we made shots, attacked the rim, and protected the ball.
Barnes move to insert Balbay for Connor was just what we’d been hoping for. The Horns went small, yet were still able to defend the perimeter oriented Cowboys fine. The smaller lineup also created better ball movement, more spacing, and more team offense.
More on all of this tomorrow. For now, that is one of the four ‘must wins’ we had left on our schedule. Another one awaits us Saturday in Boulder.

I underestimated the crowd for this game
They let everyone come down from the mezzanine as expected, but the upper deck still looked 1/3-1/2 full. It was refreshing watching the Horns perform as a team for the majority of the game and receive steady contributions all around. We cut down on the number of frantic/rushed possessions while everyone hit big shots. Connor’s early confidence was contagious to the rest of the team, especially Abrams. Of course, it has always helped AJ get open when Atchley hits his threes. Keep it up, Horns.
Turnstile was just 9,036
Tickets sold 13,545. So just over 3,500 people had tickets but didn’t show up.
I don’t think you underestimated anything. That was by far the worst crowd in the conference season.
--AW--
Let's not forget the turnout
for the Baylor football game after we lost the best game of the season on a last second miracle play.
Crowd was awful at the start of the game
Some guy in the mezzanine told my buddy and I to sit down because we were obstructing his view. He was three rows behind us. No students in the O-zone until well into the game and a lot of those people had tickets for other sections. No one wanted to make any noise. Pathetic.

Damn, I somehow slept through the entire game....
Such is the life of a law student who didn’t retire until 4:30 a.m. last night.. Anyway, When I saw the score I just about hit the roof. 99 to 74? HELL YEAH. Don’t ever misunderestimate Rick Barnes. He is a Man.
And the Longhorn Nation collectively takes a deep breath..
I've been extremely critical of Barnes this season...
…but this game showed why he is still our coach. Starting Dogus for Connor was a smart move that I’ve been wanting for weeks, but it was the change in on-court strategy that really fueled the offense tonight. When the very first thing we saw in the game was Dogus attacking aggressively off the dribble, even though he missed the shot, we knew we were going to see a much better team than the one that played the last several games. Also, Chapman didn’t play any meaningful minutes. That in and of itself can only help the team. He’s one of the worst basketball players I’ve ever seen at the major-college level.
This was a game we really needed at this point in the season: a homestand against a truly mediocre team that we could push around with impunity. I’ve been thinking that this was a perfect time for an out-of-conference guarantee game to give our guys the opportunity to regain some confidence against an overmatched opponent, but it’s even better that we basically got that game and it counted in the league standings.
That having been said, I’ll be glad when Byron Eaton graduates. That kid is a bulldog.
A stupid system that works exactly like it's supposed to is still a stupid system.
If I may refer you to 2 years ago....
we all thought Connor Atchley was one of the worst basketball players to receive a scholarship at Texas, lumped in a category with JD Lewis. Their moms even got mad at us. With some development, and in the right situation, I believe Chapman has the offensive skills to be a decent college big man (though he’s never going to be the defensive player shot blocker that Connor is). Let’s see how he does next year.
Well, tonight he hit a free throw
“One more point than a dead man”
Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. If they get mad, you're a mile away AND you have their shoes.
I have to agree with Caradoc
Chapman hasn’t show much to say he can develop any skills, sometimes you have to look at a player and say he’s just taller than the next guy and that’s his advantage. I really hope he develops into something, right now, he’s got a long way to go.

I don't know anyone who thought Connor was terribad as a freshman
OTOH, I don’t know anyone who thinks Clint isn’t terribad.
A stupid system that works exactly like it's supposed to is still a stupid system.
Empty Drum = more focused team? less pressure? OSU sucks?
It is amazing what losing three in a row does to the fanbase, students especially. It was terribly sad to see the OZones have absolutely no one in them. I will give props to txtwstr who got to dance with the pom squad at center court in the second half. Anyway, just a poor turnout to what ended up being a fun game to watch for a Texas fan. Oh well, as goes Texas basketball.
The Horns absolutely lit up the nets last night. At one point we were 7-of-10 from three and 19-of-21 FTs, or somewhere in that balkpark. This is not something we can expect game-in-game-out from the team, but it has got to feel great for the guys to have a game where everything is going right, when it has been going so wrong lately. Even if the Horns don’t shoot 60% from the field (excluding mop-up time) we still easily win this game.
Connor Atchley and Dogus Balbay
A solid shooting performance for Connor should go a long way for not only his confidence but also the teams’. Getting ~10pts. from Connor a game is 10 extra points than we have been getting, since his minutes probably don’t change much.
Dojo can make a jumper from 13’, I’ve seen it, but only one a game. The rest of the time he spent probing the defense and attacking the rim – which is exactly what we needed. He also protected the ball. Did we have 7 turnovers for the team? Yes, seven. That is DJ/TJ numbers. With Dogus handling the ball and Mason taking over or giving us a second ball handler on the floor really seemed to give the offense more flow. Combined they were 13 assists, 1 turnover. Solid.
PB has dropped the Ball Control Index stat several times lately [(Assists + Steals) / Turnovers]. For this game it has to be our best of the season by far, (19+8)/7 = 3.86
Hook ’em!
That guy is txtwstr? Awesome.
I’ve only seen him do the Wabash dance in the stands before tonight. Very nice.
Dogus' jumper
The play where he hit the jumper the announcers said that Dogus passes on his first oppertunity and Bares yelled at Dogus to take the shot so he did the exact same move and hit the jumper.
he's got to keep taking that shot
at least once or twice a game to keep his defender from sagging so much. i think he took basically the same shot on two strait possessions. missed the first, made the second.
beautiful thing to watch
What a joy to watch a game like that one. It’s been hard to watch for the last few weeks but that game was enjoyable. This is everything we thought that this team would be all year long. I’m sure they feel as much relief as we do!
