Dogus Balbay
After the win tonight, there is no question that we are happy with him and the effort he gave to this team. First, lets give him props, however, with Lucas comin to town next year, is Doge the point guard of the future? He can't shoot, and Lucas can, i respect Doge, for he has helped us and rejuvinated us more than anyone could have this past year, but does he have a place on next year's team??? Cynically, i say no, but he is a good kid, and i hope he can contribute...thoughts????

I'm pretty sure
he’ll split playing time with Lucas because Dogus plays some nasty defense. Anyway it’s very possible Dogus works on his jump shot during the offseason.

Dogus and Lucas will fight for the starting PG spot
but with Lucas’ scoring abilities, don’t be surprised if they both play on the court at the same time based on matchups.

Always
It’s always better too have a surplus of talent, than not enough. It will be a tough call who gets the reigns, but I like either prospect. They could split some time on the court, but I don’t see that as much of an option. Consider that we will have: 4 guards returning as well as the 2 coming in from recruiting and THEN add Lucas.6 guards in what will be a competition for either 2 or 3 spots on the floor depending on what kind of game is run. A 2 guard set could be seen considering that I believe that it will be Texas’ strength next year. With Johnson, Chapman, Pittman, Wangmene, and Hill all more than likely returning (plus the addition of Hamilton), I expect huge production from the middle if you factor in the off season. I am assuming Damion goes to the draft. All this being said, Ithink they will split time with Lucas getting about a 65 35 time advantage. I think Dogus will be used when the team goes cold due to his ability to drive to the basket.

good game
He played a great game against ou..He is a little reckless going to the hoop at times though.

A place on the team?
Do you really think that or is that just standard internet hyperbole? Even if he does not start, he will be the back up point, with better shooters to pass to, and will get plenty of minutes. To think that he would not play after what he did last night is ridiculous.

Shooting
Maybe in the off season he will be able to improve his shooting.
Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. If they get mad, you're a mile away AND you have their shoes.

I was glad to see him at least attempt some shots
None of his jumpers hit but you gotta at least try once in a while.

Dictator or Committee
Some of the recent posts have drove home the point that basketball is a team sport and though some teams can succeed when run by committee most of the best teams are Dictatorships where the point guard must direct the offensive play. Throughout the season we saw a team that lacked cohesion and direction because the team was used to DJ running the team and it was slow to adapt to DJ being gone. The team never really got proficient with the committee leadership.
Now we see Balby stepping into that role and feeling enough a part of the team and gaining enough confidence to assert his leadership over the team. From last night it seems that the Horns play more confident when the various role players can go ahead and fulfill those roles when they are, and the point guard (in this case Balbay) are comfortable. When all each player has to do if fill their particular role they become comfortable and gain confidence and shots will begin to fall. This has a greatest effect on outside shooting which may be why Atchely and AJ have struggled as much as they have.
With Balbay asserting himself the team goes from something akin to a wobbling unbalanced wheel to a efficiently and smoothly spinning tire. As Dogus grows into his role he will eventually find his particular scoring possibilities whether that’s outside shooting or attacking the basket. It should be a smoother ride as Balbay gets more and more comfortable running the team.

I may be wrong but I was under the impression that
Lucas isn’t a pure PG. He’s more of a combo-guard right? And he’s kinda short too. So lets not anoint him till he hits the floor next year. As it is Balbay has show some flashes of brilliance. It should be a good rotation next year.

He's definitely a combo-guard
Dogus’ inability to consistently make a jump shot beyond 10 feet, along with his reluctance despite being ridiculously open, is the only reason I think it’s even possible he doesn’t start next year.

Starting
where the players listed first at each position. Two of the freshman, Bradley and Hamilton, are better than anyone on our team this year.

interesting assessment. You really think mason is not going to start? Id be suprised .

Mason
He will probably start at the beginning of the season as Bradley adjusts to the college game. If Bradley lives up to the hype, he is a Mason-like defender with a jump shot. I know that Justin will be a senior but it will be difficult to keep him out there if there is a similar defensive presence who can actually score on the bench.
I do expect Bradley and Hamilton start for most of the season, if not from the very begininng.

Hypothetical
where would you slide James if he comes back? I’m guessing we’ll have him starting at the 3. That would cause a glut at the SF. Barnes is going to have a lot of fun with his rotations hopefully.
Has Wangmene ever played PF? He seems like a true C to me. I would put him ahead of Chaps and Hill in the depth chart for C.

Alexis is only 6'7" he's not tall enough to play the center

thats not his starting lineup he thought I was listing everyone that was going to be on the team, I think

I’m pretty sure he gave you enough credit to not think that there were only 6 people on the team next year. AW’s not saying that. He’s saying that the freshmen we have coming in a more than good enough to start, and at least 1 of them will.

Awesome
That lineup sounds very salty!! Final Four Baby with a capital F Baby for Next Year!! Nice win against BlowU Saturday night!! Second Round Exit for this years team!!! Hate to say!! There probably looking at a 8 or 9 seed in one of the regions.
by TexasStateHorn on Feb 23, 2009 9:18 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
hoping we land a 6 or 7 seed...
easier path, but even if we’re a 6,7,8 or whatever it will be a very scary matchup in the second round for the 1,2, or 3 seed we face.
Honestly, I’d be delighted with getting out of the first round with this year’s squad.
