Chile To Receiver

Well, if you have a orangebloods.com subscription, you must already know that the new news it that they are changing Chiles to receiver. I myself think its great news. But then again, idk, there are questions that need to be answered. I think he has the speed to out run and defender but I need to watch and evaluate next weekend to give my final thought on this. I just hope that this turns out to be an advantage on our part. If he has the hands, then I know he will make a great threat.

About Time

We need a true “Percy Harvin” type threat, not sure if JC is the right guy

by PineypointG on Feb 26, 2009 2:47 PM CST reply actions

Thank Goodness

I always thought that he would be an excellent Cosby replacement…. Fast former QB- can make plays on slants, good for reverses and than throw the occasional option pass if a dude is wide open. Good move by Chiles, he obviously read the writing on the wall

by Tackchevy on Feb 26, 2009 2:48 PM CST reply actions

Writing on the wall

The writing on the wall was in BOLD letters it reads: GG and Colt Jr.

by PineypointG on Feb 26, 2009 2:51 PM CST reply actions

GG and Connor Woods with Colt Jr. doing something maybe someday.

Garrett Gilbert: 2014 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year

by jordansb on Feb 26, 2009 3:13 PM CST up reply actions

Well no more wondering if Gilbert will redshirt

I like it – it gives Gilbert some good experience this year before taking over the reigns next. Thank goodness Chiles came to his senses – now he has a chance to turn his career around and make an impact the next 2 years.

We all saw Chiles at QB and if the coaches liked him at backup over Sherrod Harris, then I can’t imagine why Gilbert wouldn’t be the backup in 2009.

by jtlonghorn on Feb 26, 2009 2:56 PM CST reply actions

dont count out sherrod, if he proves himself he can be the backup qb laeving GG redshirted

by MJY6087 on Feb 26, 2009 3:26 PM CST up reply actions

I'd like to believe that....

But if you want proof as to GD’s failure to get meaningful playing time for backup QB’s at Texas, look no further than Sherrod Harris. We have absolutely no idea what to expect from him and he’s been on campus a while now…

by the1austin on Feb 26, 2009 4:26 PM CST up reply actions

You assume that GG will get good experience if he isn't red shirted....

Sorry, but getting decent reps for backup QB’s is not GD’s strong suit. GG should absolutely be red-shirted unless he is going to get significant playing time. With a Heisman Runner-Up coming back, that is not going to happen.

And, let’s face it fellas, either Connor or Case is going to transfer at some point. That is the current trend in all of college football and we should know about it (see Snead and Kinne). The days of QB recruits being cool with being 4 year backups ( a la Sherrod and Nordgren) or even waiting around three years for a chance to start as seniors (a la Chance Mock) are over….

by the1austin on Feb 26, 2009 4:25 PM CST up reply actions

No kidding

See how our “experienced” backup got meaningful minutes this year.

Redshirt GG, the season depends on Colt being healthy over the long run anyway, give GG 4 years.

by BoddickerIsClutch on Feb 26, 2009 4:49 PM CST up reply actions

GG

will get a lot of playing time in the 2nd half of many games in 2009. Texas should have good leads in most of their games going into the 4th quarter.

by Longhorns84 on Feb 26, 2009 8:53 PM CST up reply actions

You would think, right?

Ask Sherrod or Jevan Snead how that will work out. Also, when is the last time UT threw a pass in the 4th quarter when winning in a blowout? Handing the ball off to out third string running back isn’t worth losing a year out of this kid.

by the1austin on Feb 26, 2009 9:41 PM CST up reply actions

Revisionist History
Also, when is the last time UT threw a pass in the 4th quarter when winning in a blowout?

That would be in the A&M game (last blow out game we played) around the 8 minute mark in the 4th quarter:

———————- 2 plays, 33 yards, TOP 00:59 -——————

Bullock, Randy kickoff 67 yards to the UT3, Williams, Malco return 11 yards
               to the UT14.
      T 1-10 T14 TEXAS drive start at 11:23.
                   Chiles in at qb.
T 1-10 T14 McGee, Vondrell rush over right end for 3 yards to the UT17 (Hunter,
                   Trent).
T 2-7 T17 Chiles, John rush over right end for no gain to the UT17.
T 3-7 T17 Chiles, John post pass complete to Webber, Montre for 9 yards to the
UT26, 1ST DOWN UT (Hunter, Trent).
T 1-10 T26 McGee, Vondrell rush up middle for loss of 2 yards to the UT24.
T 2-12 T24 McGee, Vondrell rush over left guard for 5 yards to the UT29 (Williams,
                   Garr.).
T 3-7 T29 Chiles, John middle pass incomplete to Collins, Brando (Gorrer, Danny).
T 4-7 T29 TEAM punt 30 yards to the TAMU41, downed (blocked by Williams, K.J.).

by Wells on Feb 27, 2009 9:15 AM CST up reply actions

Missouri too

Chiles threw a TD pass late in the game, but I think Mack knows Colt will be gone next year and GG needs this year for practice. The BCS gurus will advise him too rack the points up this year also.

by Longhorns84 on Feb 27, 2009 5:17 PM CST up reply actions

No he wont

Our QBs get experience in the fire, its just how it is. Colt played 3 quarters in a bunch of games this past year, do you think Chiles had a lot of meaningful playtime?

by BoddickerIsClutch on Feb 27, 2009 8:23 AM CST up reply actions

quite honestly

I’ve wanted to see Sherrod Harris at QB before John Chiles came to school. Maybe finally that will happen….or maybe Gilbert will be stealing playing time from him. I feel bad for Harris actually but at least he’s getting free education.

by clra2 on Feb 26, 2009 3:24 PM CST reply actions

Did Chiles decide this or was it forced?

After Chiles had Brown agree to keep him at qb, I didn’t think this would happen, especially not before spring practice. What changed & in who’s head? Any chance he sees some time at TE? He’s got 6 months to bulk up & is listed currently on this site at 215. I guess this virtually hands the starting qb spot to Gilbert in 2010.

by hungry on Feb 26, 2009 3:38 PM CST reply actions

if connor doesn’t beat him out… anything is possible

by Displaced Longhorn on Feb 26, 2009 3:42 PM CST up reply actions

Always Been Chiles' Call

Coaches tried to get him to switch for this past year, but he wanted to keep at it. Mack has a policy of never forcing a player into a role they don’t want… So this year, Chiles of course could remain at QB, but he would never see the field, most likely.

by Tackchevy on Feb 26, 2009 3:46 PM CST up reply actions

Thanks for the link

Interesting that Mack seems to understand the size of this decision for Chiles and asks him to speak to his family one more time before doing anything.

by hungry on Feb 27, 2009 3:12 PM CST up reply actions

Redshirt GG!

Give the kid a full four years! Someone needs to be able to challenge Colt’s career numbers… Come on Mack, do the right thing for us stats losers…

by Tackchevy on Feb 26, 2009 3:44 PM CST reply actions

Sherrod Harris!!!

He finally gets his chance! I think he can be good. Donovan McNabb good.

Chiles is going to need to drop some of the Maddog diet if he wants to get up to Percy Harvin speed.

by Hippie Killer on Feb 26, 2009 4:07 PM CST reply actions

Here's a question...

I’ve always thought that Chiles would make for a great reciver (I was also one of the few who, up until realizing he’s switching positions, thought he would be starting qb in ’10) BUT, who exactly is he an improvement over among our current receiving corps?

And those guys are all have more remaining than Colt (Shipley aside). I get the feeling Chiles may have moved from the bench to another slot on the bench.

by andmyster on Feb 26, 2009 5:09 PM CST reply actions

we’ll see how he pans out.. he could be quite good. he could be slow to start, we won’t know what to expect until spring prac.

by Displaced Longhorn on Feb 26, 2009 5:55 PM CST up reply actions

However

receivers can exist on a rotation, which wasn’t going to happen at QB

by BrooklynHorn on Feb 26, 2009 10:02 PM CST up reply actions

i dont see GG wiping out colts records? Maybe matching them but not beating them. Why?

1) When GG plays his first yr in 09 (im assuming he RS), he will have a experienced group to throw to, just like Colt did his first year. (Williams, Kirkendoll, Collins, etc will be veterans)
2) Our “NC year” will be GGs sophomore year (2011) rather than a huge jr year like Colt

by MJY6087 on Feb 26, 2009 9:02 PM CST reply actions

GG

If GG plays in 2009 than how will it be a RS?

GG needs to play in 2009, and get ready to start the next 3 years.

by Longhorns84 on Feb 27, 2009 5:20 PM CST up reply actions

typo, i meant a rFr in 2010

ITS OK Guys we have john paul floyd as a backup as well

by MJY6087 on Feb 26, 2009 11:14 PM CST reply actions

Bueno Suerte

I for one am happy for him. I have always been a fan and will be excited to see him on the field in a competitive situation instead of a blow out. Not sure about his route running skills or hands, but that isn’t really that big of a deal with our short passing game and screens as runs passing philosophy. He will be more likely to break the big one than half of our receivers currently on the roster.

Romance Taylor?

Whats the chances of JC getting the Romance Taylor position?

by PineypointG on Feb 27, 2009 9:40 AM CST reply actions

No

it is legs spread, bent over slightly and hands flat against the hood of the police cruiser.

What if James Henry decided bitches didn’t need to be kicked?

Never understood this misspelling.

"Stats are for losers, I like winning games."

by SuperBentley on Feb 27, 2009 7:49 PM CST up reply actions

I once knew a fellow named Taylor

who was oddly romantic.

"Hey, a White guy! They're funny."

by bfaut86 on Feb 28, 2009 12:06 AM CST up reply actions

LOL

Very funny, I know Percy Harvin may be a little unrealistic, but Romance Taylor is a very attainable result

Here’s a football-related point… everybody knows that John Chiles in the open field is a thoroughly DANGEROUS man. Dude got wheels.

by ChE83 on Feb 28, 2009 10:07 PM CST reply actions

Man, we are gonna be MONSTER at WR next year. Here’s something to think about :

Malcolm Williams.

Learn that name. Learn it well.

He is the best we’ve had since Roy Williams.

Williams, Chiles, Brandon Collins…. Colt is gonna be playin’ pitch and catch with the best stable of thoroughbreds in the country.

This is gonna be entertaining.

by ChE83 on Feb 28, 2009 10:08 PM CST reply actions

I think kirkendoll is the difference maker for us next yr, maybe williams, but i just have a hunch after seeing kirkendoll make that bold 4th and XX play.
