Even better -- the coordinators talk, too
Coach Boom is back behind the microphone, a welcome place for him. As is Greg Davis, coming off a season where he remarkably suffered little criticism. Quite a movement in his career. Yes! More football information.

Will's a funny guy
On where the team is in the first spring meeting as opposed to last year: It was great. This morning we met and I felt like I was speaking English to them, that was a much, much more improvement from last year.

Davis's comments
I really liked his take on the running game and the different blocking schemes. More two back sets and a tougher attitude.
He did a good job explaining our TE situation too. It’s amazing how badly those injuries screwed us up.

I'm glad he admitted that TE is more of a concern than the running situation
I think that’s a fair assessment. If we can go as far as we did without a Grade A running game, then at least the passing game needs to be diversified to prevent anyone from “figuring out” the Texas scheme (not that anyone did a superb job at it last season).

Also
I enjoy Davis’s insight to how he and Muschamp work. They really bounce ideas off of each other and try to find holes in each others’ attacks. That’s a dedicated, well-oiled coaching machine right there.

Davis
“They were moving the ball, and I am sitting in the box and I’m thinking, "Gosh Almighty, Will. If they’re going to score, let them score now so we’ve got some time." And what he did and what he told Mack was we’re going to run blitz and we’re going to need to stone it or they’re going to puff one. If they puff one, we’ve got more time. It was a heck of a plan.”
I have no idea what he’s talking about.

When OSU was running the clock down
and about to score. They could have run the time out and kicked a field goal or gotten a touchdown. Luckily, although it seemed pretty apparent at the time, the Longhorns didn’t put up too much a fight to stop that run. Thus allowing time for Colt’s heroics.
Although when you hear Davis use stone and puff in the same sentence, you start to realize that when the play calling goes awry, there may be a reason. Maybe he has the munchies.

This is great strategy,
The stuff of NCAA ‘09 on XBox. Blitz like hell, hope that you come up with some game changer, if it backfires, they score, but you’ve got time to come back. Love this.

This is the first time I've heard
some of the Coach Boom insight, as well as his uproarious slang and jargon. I thought a couple of his most telling points concerned offseason work and what the coaches can tell from it, and his explanation of true freshmen playing and of how it’s almost more the ability to adjust to the new parts of their lives, not just raw skill.
I was opposed to the head-coach-in-waiting decision for somebody with less than a year on campus . . . I am becoming a believer in this man’s future as The Big Guy.

I had thought of him more as a man of action type
which he is on the field, but he’s a thinking man’s defensive coordinator. Great stuff.
And he points out the true edge the ’09 team has over ’08:
Really when you hit fall camp, the experimenting needs to be over. We need to get ready to play and get guys comfortable with what they’re going to do.
And he really likes really. Really.
