Espinosa makes 13 ($)
Orangebloods is reporting that Cedar Park offensive lineman Dominic Espinosa received an offer from the Longhorns yesterday and became the 13th commitment for the 2010 class. No other confirmation from the other services yet. If it's true, it means that DeSoto's Evan Washington has virtually no chance of receiving an offer, unless Jake Matthews goes elsewhere and the coaches decide they want three offensive lineman in the class. I don't really see that happening, but there will be a spot open for Matthews until the 2010 class signs in roughly 11 months.

thanks for the info
Sounds like recruiting target on tye OL is for centers/guards, and Washington (I believe) projects as a tackle. Since Mack signed 3 tackles last month, I can see that. But if Washington is interested and Matthews drags his feet, I’d go for Washington before he commits elsewhere. Horns never win those foot-draggers.
I really like Washington
because of his athleticism as a former basketball player and his upside as someone who only has played football for one year. That being said, Matthews is about as can’t-miss as you can get and has similar athleticism, but incredible technique for someone his age and obvious pedigree. He’s a guy that you wait for.

Traylon Shead Commits
According to Orangebloods
That makes 14 ($)
Looks like the only other RB we will take is Seastruck. Dontae williams did not show.
Blazz
OB
is listing that DB Bryant Jackson is commit #15. There’s not a feature story, but he’s listed on the 2010 commit list:

'Til Gabriel blows his horn...
You wonder if those guys ranked in the top 10
in the state are getting the message. Most have received offers, only one (Dixon) has accepted . . . and the available scholarships are running out.
I don’t think they’re getting that message. It’s not like Texas is trying to bring them around with pressure by getting lesser recruits to commit.
On another note, it appears Rivals has cut the 250 to watch list down to the Rivals 100, and ten of the 16 UT recruits (incl. Espinosa and Shead) are on it.

great pickups in Shead and Espinosa. I do not understand the other commits though. I do not see why you would take this many commits this early. You have not even had your summer camps yet. Evidently you have 4-5 spots left. Now if 2-3 guys come into your camp and absolutely blow your coaches away, you are screwed. You have to keep a couple of spots open in case Seastrunk or Jeffcoat decide to come to Austin, so you will not have any room. Just seems more prudent to take 12-13 commits right now and hold off on the rest. I heard that Matthews did make it down on Friday but left before today. Any truth to that?
Whether its good in the long run or not, this is generally how Texas does it.
They don’t bring in many kids, I think this year is the most brought in in a couple of years. Matthews was there yesterday, not today. I think they’ll leave spots open for a couple of key players, Seastrunk, Cobbs, Jeffcoat or Wilson, Hicks, Nelson.
I actually agree with you in principle
I don’t like the early stuff – just makes evaluations and projections that much harder. However, it is hard to argue with the results of the last several classes that were put together this way.
No matter what, there is no way we run out of room for Seastrunk, Jeffcoat/Wilson, Darius White and Matthews. Now the coaches can spend the next 11 months putting the full court press of these guys.
24-24 is the number being throw around now, so that leaves 7-8 spots after the latest WR commit.
I’m pretty sure they’re going to have plenty of room for Seastrunk, Jeffcoat, Wilson, and Matthews. They have 17 commitments, assuming all of them remain committed, and that leaves eight spots to round out the 25 NCAA maximum. I don’t know why that would concern anyone. It’s not like Mack’s signing 31 or 32 recruits like Saban does.

Gotta be some serious attrition
to get 24 openings. There are only 15 seniors next year. And, at the moment, the summer roster projects to 86 (though attrition this spring/summer will shrink that some).
I understand that Texas always gets a large number of commits early. I just don’t think you have ever had this many committed this early. I bet it was August last year before you had 17 commits. What happens if another Tevin Mims pops up and has a monster senior year?
The real questions are:
-Which of the current commits shouldn’t have been offered this early? I’m generally pretty pessimistic, but I don’t really see any reaches so far. Even the unknowns have offers from OU or LSU. Do you not go after these guys now and risk losing them just in case someone blows up later?
-How are the numbers going to work to get to 85? You’ve got this spring/summer, the fall and next spring to get there. Espinosa has already mentioned grayshirting, so there is one possible spot right there.
Texas reached 19 commits
when DT Derek Johnson committed in late May of ‘08 . . . largest classes they’ve signed recently were 2006 (25 signings) and 2007 (24); believe the ‘06 bunch had 23-24 committed by mid fall of ’05 . . . this is an unusually large commitment list for this early. Geez — they’re not even working out in pads yet at spring training.
The QB from Garland who y’all recruited as an athlete is really a legit 4.6 guy and not the 4.4 you see listed. I would have waited on him. I have seen the LB from Garland play and he did not stand out. He is another I would have waited on. I know Mike Sherman thinks that Espinosa is one of the top OLs availabe so if y’all can get him to redshift then that is great. Maybe you guys are just that far ahead of everyone else in evaluating the state but that is hard for me to believe. Like I said, we will see how it all works out and there is no denying that you have some definite studs committed. Just seems to me that 12 commits right now would be more prudent.
Both of those guys had offers from OU
So if you really want them and don’t want to play against them for 4 years, you have to offer them now. I don’t really have a feel for Harris, but I think the LB Jackson looks like a stud. Another thing to remember on these is that LB is a very big need in this class and apparently we are taking 4 WR’s, not including Terrell.
Maybe you guys are just that far ahead of everyone else in evaluating the state but that is hard for me to believe.
Remember this is one of the benefits of getting 80% of your recruiting done by the end of the spring. You have a ton of time to start evaluating and recruting the Jrs. to be.
Great discussion, btw.
