Tre Newton as well
is a redshirt freshman running back.

It's also worth noting that there are currently
87 scholarships committed next fall, with 85 the maximum allowable. There will be some attrition after spring practice.

Does that count Goodwin?
I thought we had to see three or four drop due to grades, transfers, etc. If its really only 2 that’s good. I thought Goodwin only counted if he played. How does his eligibility work? If he practices but doesn’t play and runs track does that count as a year of football eligibility or can he redshirt for football and still run track?
goodwin is on a track scholarship
so at the moment he doesn’t count against the 85. If he plays football they could give him a scholarship, but there’s no chance he’ll be on the team next year and will redshirt if anything. If he eventually makes the team, they’ll use a scholarship on him.

Goodwin won't count against football
until he gets on the field for a game.

RB's
Our RB recruiting has been puzzling the last few years, to say the least. To have 7 scholarship RBs on the roster for the coming year, and really only feeling like 1 of them has a chance to be a feature give-it-to-him-20-times-a-game guy (Whaley), just is a bit of a head scratcher.
I dont know what to make of Hills and Newton. It would seem that they are destined to be nothing more than backups here. And if thats the case, should we not expect at least one of them (Newton most likely) to transfer for the opportunity to play somewhere?
And Vondrell seems to be the odd man out going forward, with Fozzy and CJ seeming to have the staff’s favor going into next year, and with Whaley in the wings.
Surely we will see some attrition here, especially if the staff locks in and picks up a committment from Seastrunk or the kid from Denton in 2010.
I think the fact that we’ve really failed to go hard after a real feature back since Cedric left is the most frustrating thing. All these guys on the roster seem like solid complimentary pieces. Just strange.
Coaches have been raving about Newton
who is a good receiver out of the backfield, which would give the Longhorns the chance to run some five-wide with him in becaue the coaches don’t like the broadcast pass with five true receivers — in other words, being able to be multiple from base personnel.

we'll see
id love to see that be the case in spring practice, but i have my doubts. If that is the case, though, would you not expect a guy like Vondrell to see the writing on the wall and look to transfer? Something has to give here. I would say Hills would be a near lock to move on, but everythign I hear is that he’s just happy to be a part of the program.
I agree
that there will be attrition at the running back spot and McGee or Hills are the most likely, with Hills more likely than McGee because he has more eligibility and is further down the depth chart.

Slim chance McGee transfers
he has to sit for year if he transfers to another bowl division school, which would leave him one year of eligibility. He can still get a shot at the NFL with limited college carries (think Selvin Young) if he wants to try for it. However, I doubt the coaches have given up on him, and if we tweak the blocking scheme for Whaley, McGee will be a beneficiary due to a similar running style.

The safety situation
Is almost comical. Why didn’t at least Brewster redshirt?
by BoddickerIsClutch on Feb 9, 2009 10:37 AM CST reply actions
Probably for reasons of depth
and he started on the kick coverage team, too, which needed help.

Evidently Mack recruits for the players that are juniors
Meaning he will take two RBs, Atwon Cobb is more of a full back in my mind but that is the big question.
Also means he will take two QBs as well.
Blazz
That’s going to be a huge safety class in 2011.

isn't mason walters supposed to be
a center? he was rated the no.1 center in the nation.
Yes, he will play center next season
But will move outside when Allen and McGaskey leave, or sooner if he beats either or both of them out.

Yeah
I’m projecting him out on the line to tackle, but as Big Roy notes he might contribute immediately on the interior.

Irby
Blaine received a medical redshirt for this season so he would technically be a sophomore.
well, did he get the medical redshirt,
or is he just eligible for it? Moot point; he’ll have sophomore eligib. once ’09 season gets here. Just hope he has the old Irby skill.
That would be great if so...
A reliable tight end for Garrett’s first two years as starter would be HUGE.
Irby is able to apply for a medical redshirt when the time comes. That means he can ask for a sixth year the same way Shipley did.
Good win is on a track ship. I doubt he ever actully play football. He showed he is on the way to top status in track. He has already faced some International competition.
Woo! We got six kickers!
One to kick off, one for onside kicks, one for FGs, one punter, one rugby punter, and one pooch punter. Guess we have that about covered. But is there a long snapper on the roster?
Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. If they get mad, you're a mile away AND you have their shoes.
Only 5, as Tucker is listed on both
But along those lines, you could put Colt in as a backup kicker too (I hope we get to see him pooch it a few more times next year), so I’ll go ahead and bump that back up to 6.
