Texas a consensus #6 seed, though my guess is that as all the sites update this week, that'll fall to #7. If Texas wants a realistic shot at playing the second weekend, they need to win these next three to get on track, steer clear of the #7-10 range.

Hey PB,

What do you think the best possible seed for this Texas team would be?

Lets say we right the ship tomorrow night and 6 out of the next 8 Then make it to the Semi-finals in the Big 12 tourney.

I would love to be able to snag a 4 seed, think its possible?

We could certainly play up to a 4

We do have quality wins in our pocket, which will help us head to head with other teams in seeding considerations…. IF we right the ship. Potential problems, though: If Nebraska or KSU falls apart, that’ll hurt some. And Notre Dame has now lost seven in a row. Arkansas was a terrible loss.

Still, quality wins matter most. Winning at A&M, vs OSU, vs OU, and two games in the Big 12 tourney would move us up into the Top 4 seed range.

love you, but...

You need to take off the burnt orange glasses. There is no way we can achieve a 4 seed unless we trounce everyone left on our schedule, 3-4 teams are ruled ineligible, and DJ Augustin regains elibility.

I didn't say we'd do it

But that we can if we do the above.

I’m with you on not thinking that realistic.

Take a#7 seed right now

The way we look, Texas may be hopeful to sniff an NIT home game. I am sorry to disagree, but assuming the “We’re Texas” attitude does not sway the committee, we are behind Mizzou, OU, and Kansas in the Big XII seeding process. Our nonconference wins do help us get in over teams like Nebraska and K-State in the body of work arguement outdueling head to head (see 2008 Big XII tiebracker nightmare that ruined my life for several months and still haunts me). However, if we have any chance at a #6-8 seed, we must basically win out in the conference, accepting a loss at Kansas, and make it to the Big XII tourney semifinals where a loss to Kansas or OU would be tolerable. Then I can see a 7 or 8 seed, with a potential 2nd round match-up versus UNC, Conn, Wake, L’ville, ouch! Best hope is for Connor and James to get their collective brains back in gear pronto, like they did the night of the KU game last year in Austin!

it's not about "We're Texas"

Big 12 standings and seeding have absolutely nothing to do with how the NCAA tournament committee will seed us. Truth is non-conference schedule DOES matter a lot, and in fact, our nonconference is what’s saving our asses from being NIT bound this year because of our mediocre Big 12 play. We won’t have to win out to get a 7-8 seed, but we would have to win out to return to 3-4.

So you’re saying if we go 7-1 with a loss at Kansas to end the season and go 1-1 in the Big 12 tournament, we will then have a “chance” at a 6-8 seed? You’re nuts.

If that scenarion played out, we would be a a 6 seed at worst, and probably better than that.

This is not going to happen, but if it did we would be doing a lot better that a 6-8 seed.

Agree 100%.

7-1, which would include a win over Oklahoma, which would accompany our wins over Villanova, UCLA, Wisconsin with “good” losses to Michigan State, OU, Kansas, and Missouri. That gets us a 4 or a 5. The committee looks at how you end the season. If we end very strongly, they’ll forgive a 3-game swoon in the middle of conference play.

Now, the way the team is playing, that’s of course not going to happen, but it’s absolutely insane to say that if this team could win seven of the next 8 games, including one over OU, with the only loss being at Kansas, that they would only have a CHANCE at an 8 seed. Absolutely insane.

This conversation reminds me of when I told 54b

54b he wasn’t funny. (Don’t worry, I got over myself and we have since made up)

Point of the story is 1) don’t get in a pissing match with 54b and 2) when people are depressed about how their team is playing rational though exercises are not always welcomed.

Yeah, that was fun.

I got into it with him on that thread too, though I think he eventually admitted that we were pretty much correct.

I am an optismist

Its my downfall especially when talking about Texas.

But they whole is we know that this team is better then they are playing. We have some really good wins over UCLA and Nova and palyed good against those teams. It is not like this team has been playing horrible this whole season, just the last few games.

If we can somehow get back to where we were against UCLA and Nova then I like our chances. I would take a 6th seed right now, I really want to stay away from the 7-10 range to avoid the number 2 seed in the second round.
