Wood Also Considering OU
No real surprise there, as OU has been in the mix for Wood, who attended their Junior Day recently. A little bit of a surprise, though, is the revelation that Wood wants to major in petroleum engineering and likes the Mewbourne School at OU. Also interesting to note is that Wood wants to make a decision in the next two weeks and is being recruited by Josh Heupel and Major Applewhite.

I would feel more comfortable about his pending decision
if we had not offered Case McCoy. From everything I have read, Wood really likes UT, and some had thought he would give a verbal this past weekend, it just seems like with McCoy already committing, it made Wood re-think his options.

Disagree
I don’t think Wood cares about McCoy committing. Every interview he gives someone asks him about competition and he always says that he doesn’t care about competition because you will have to beat someone out at any school you decide to attend. Wood is a stud, he’s not worried about McCoy. If anything, Gilbert is the bigger concern with Wood because he would be sitting behind Gilbert for at least two, maybe three years, possibly four if Gilbert redshirts and then stays for his senior season. That’s a long time. He could compete for the job at OU his freshman year. That is what has him thinking about things.

You are probably right
but, Gilbert has been committed almost an entire year, and his comments all along made it seem like he was a strong Texas lean.. Suddenly, OU is a lot closer than previously thought, and my only explanation was McCoy. I’m sure Stoops and Co. are pitching the idea to him that he will be their only QB recruit in this class.

Jesus
Both UT and OU’s petroleum engineering schools are top 3. There’s not a huge difference when you’re talking one or two ranking spots.
I do know, however, that petroleum engineers at UT get $80k-$110k starting, with interest from all the major oil companies and a lot of the elite independents. Rankings seem pretty irrelevant to me when I see those kinds of numbers.

Err…what I’m seeing right now says OU is tied for fifth, not in the top three.

Texas and Texas A&M Petroleum Engineering are way ahead of the rest for Undergrad
Part of that is because Stanford doesn’t really have an undergrad PE program.

HIGHLY HIGHLY UNLIKELY
that this kid majors in petro engineering. Sure he says he is interested in that field, but if he is this highly touted as that article say he is, there is no way he will have time to major in such field.
We all know that being a QB even in college level requires lots of film studies and commitment. He might start out but I doubt he will end up getting that degree.
Go major something easy buddy….like sports management and join 80% of the NCAA

Are you kidding? If Myron Rolle could do what he wanted to do, why couldn’t Wood do this, provided he’s at least semi-intelligent?
Sports management, kinesiology, criminal justice, etc. = waste of time, even at UT.

how many myron rolle's do u see everyday?
and given that myron rolle was the number 1 recruit coming out of HS, do you think he has improved his draft stock while in college?
I think what he has done is extraordinary, but he was barely noticeable in FSU-Wisconsin bowl game.
Yes, sure these are STUDENT-ATHLETES, but come on, be realistic.
What I am saying, Wood COULD, but probably WONT

Nonetheless, I think anyone who steers another human being with no serious mental handicap toward a major like CJ or sports mgmt. should not be in the business of steering human beings anymore. A degree in such a major is probably worth less toward getting a decent job in Texas than name recognition as a former UT football player.

Had a friend in college
started for CU at CB and graduated in 4 years with a Mechanical Engineering Degree, it can be done.

Remember Ohio State's Craig Krenzel?
That dude majored in molecular biology.

In my four years at UT as a ChemE
The only athlete in ChemE or PE was one guy who ran cross-country two years below me. I’m sure it can be done, but I’m betting if he goes to UT, he doesn’t stay PE all four years. It’s just too much of a time commitment.

Could be, but these days kids going for these more practical majors tend to come in with more college credits, whether from AP testing, juco classes, or ghosting. A high school junior who knows he wants to play football and major in something that isn’t a cakewalk tends to be motivated to get a head start, so I hope that’s what he does.

Sure - I went in to UT with 68 credits
Unfortunately, all that does is get the easy classes out of the way (Calculus, English, History, Beginning Chemistry, Beginning Physics, etc.) All your doing is getting the classes that don’t take any time commitment out of the way earlier. There are no AP tests for any of the Petroleum Engineering courses.
I’m certainly not saying you cannot be the starting quarterback at UT and graduate PE. I’m just saying I think it would be very difficult and I doubt he does it.

Could be. I had calc, English comp 1 and 2, lit, chem, physics, bio, and four semesters of German credit under my belt, and while none of those were classes that would have killed my time for playing sports all three seasons all four years, having them out of the way allowed me to spread the hard classes on my schedule more evenly. I sure was glad not to have advanced German semantics at the same time as differential equations and numerical analysis, for example.

Although German semantics is not required for an engineering degree
At least it wasn’t 4 years ago…
by Texas Wahoo on Feb 10, 2009 10:04 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Right, but it was required for one of my degrees. I wasn’t trying to imply that Wood would have to take German semantics, but rather illustrate that I was able to spread some of the hardest courses out so that each semester was balanced.

To add to what burntorangehorn said
If he redshirts he can spread the classes over 5 years as well.
