Muschamp back in Alabama?
Coach Muschamp has recently been seen back in Alabama visiting with Nick Saban. Should we worry??? This is suppose to be a time when coaches meet with other coaches picking each other brains. I worry because Alabama is lacking a LB coach and could use Muschamp as a def. coor. (who can't). Muschamp and Saban are old buddies, and it scares me that they are together. Thoughts?
Is Jeffcoat an ou lean? I read a few weeks back that he was an ou lean.
Is there any recent recruiting rumors?
What's up with Calvin Howell? OB has a headline saying...the latest on Clavin Howell.

If LSU is lacking a LB coach, why would Will Muschamp talk to Nick Saban who is the coach at Alabama

What?
Saban, Bama, LSU, Linebackers, tackles, ends…
Muschamp isnt going anywhere this year. Much less to LSU due to his visit to Bama.

Bevo Beat Article
Nothing to worry about, but then again I do not worry about him leaving. We need to stop hitting the knee jerk reaction button every time a Defensive Coaching position is open.

no..not really
I was really seeing what everyone else thought about the situation. I don’t like the fact that Muschamp is sharing defensive plans and ideas with other teams, and I don’t like how UT had Clemson coaches come in to learn the Texas offense.

Well
Davis learned the zone read from visiting West Virginia, so there is a give and take to the coaches meeting with each other. I don’t think you give away the secret family recipe, but open discussion leads to better innovation on both sides.

i dont think there is a need to be anal about it

indeed, DKR taught ...
… ou & Alabama the wishbone.
DKR might have been hanging around the sit-ins or love-ins or something in those days, breathing in lots of air if you know what I mean – I’d like to think that because I could never stand him helping them out!

so what a REAL sports problem?
when your def. coor./ future coach is meeting with other teams coaches?
by Longhorns84 on Mar 17, 2009 2:00 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
didnt the clemson coaches just come visit Mack?
Wtf, I made my case last fall that Muschamp will not be the head coach at UT but this is hardly the type of development that might signal that development. Hell, odds are he WILL be head coach at UT, but if he isn’t its not going to be because some school as a LB coach opening. Sheesh. It might be for similarly elite programs like a Florida if Meyer were to try the NFL or PSU or FSU once Bowden and Paterno finally shame themselves into retirement. Anywho

Total overreaction
I’d hate to see how some people would react if they had a real problem to worry about.

how so?
I just read the article that Austin American Statesman supplied, and if the article is true then UT fans should worry. I just think the person who wrote the article is trying to stir things up on a slow news day.
by Longhorns84 on Mar 17, 2009 1:59 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
No, UT fans should not worry
When there is an article in the Statesman that says “Will Muschamp in Tuscaloosa to interview for new coaching gig,” then UT fans should worry.
I think Muschamp has earned the right to be taken at his word when he says Texas is where he wants to be. Think about the opportunities he gave up when he accepted the “head-coach-in-waiting” title. Does it really make sense to you that he would have given up his shot at being a BCS head coach to be named Mack’s successor, only to throw all of that way for the chance to be a LB coach/defensive coordinator at Alabama? Not bloody likely.

plus,
I think I read somewhere that his family STRONGLY preferred Austin to Alabama. That was one of the cited reasons for his decision to stay last year.

Reporting is not the same as stirring things up.
Fact: Muschamp went to ’Bama.
Fact: Sometimes newspapers report facts.
I just read the article that Austin American Statesman supplied, and if the article is true then UT fans should worry
Second sentence of the article starts with:
But rest assured Longhorn fans
I read that, and I don’t think I should worry. Maybe that’s just my reading comprehension kicking in.

The article
chides the wild internet rumors. I would not say the article is stirring anything up.

I live in Atlanta...
Today at lunch I saw a guy walking down the street who kind of looked like Colt McCoy. The Jackets need a QB…should I be worried that Colt is transferring to GA Tech?

well..
Colt doesn’t have any ties to GT, so the smart a$$ comment doesn’t relate. Muschamp and Saben have ties.

I too fear Muschamp vacationing in Alabama because it shows poor time management
If I’m making 900k a year, having dinner at Sabes house discussing how to implement a zone blitz scheme with teenagers over a weber grill in Tuscaloosa is not how I’d be spending my spare time. Bringing some Boom Motherf***er to Ibiza on the other hand…

Clauses
Does anyone know specifics on Muschamp’s contract? Are there any clauses that would prevent him from leaving?
by PineypointG on Mar 17, 2009 2:05 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Don't have a quote...
But my understanding from reading all of the Mike Leach contract stuff is that there is no such clause.
by utexas87 on Mar 17, 2009 2:39 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
There's ALWAYS a way to get out of a contract for these guys...
It usually just costs quite a pretty penny (see: Rich Rodriguez hoofing it for Michigan and having to literally pay the piper on the way), whether it’s an explicit amount stated in the contract or a figure arrived at through arbitration.
But again, if you’re a big name and you’re getting an up-front bonus, that bonus may as well be a “legal issues resolution” fund.
by TXinDC on Mar 17, 2009 3:42 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
If you believe published reports ...
there is no buyout clause for either side. There is a clause that increases Muschamp’s future salary (i.e. his head coach salary) the longer he has to wait for the job, but this is just in anticipation of a higher going rate for head coaches over time. There is no buyout that Muschamp has to pay if he leaves early and no penalty that Texas would have to pay if Mack doesn’t retire before a certain date.

Thanks for the info
I didn’t know about the salary increase for every year he has to wait. That makes a lot of sense.

I blame Doug Gillett
Muschamp probably read that Gillett gave him 4 Godots, and is looking for a new gig. Will probably reads all the college football blogs, having nothing better to do with his time. He also is smart enough to know that Saban will likely move on in the next year or so, based on his track record.
But seriously, folks, do you think there is enough money in the entire state of Alabama to get Muschamp to quit working for Mack Brown and go to work for Little Nicky Saban? Ask Major, who left the OC job there to take a lesser post at UT.
by Longhorn in Canada on Mar 17, 2009 6:18 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
well, UT is his alma mater… kind of a no brainer there.
by Displaced Longhorn on Mar 17, 2009 9:00 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
It's not a no-brainer when you're the OC
I know a lot of people thought Major’s OC title was a token one because of Saban’s propensity to micromanage, and maybe it was. And his salary at Texas is the same as his salary was at Alabama. But going from the OC title to a RB coach is a bit like a company exec accepting a job in mid-management at another company of equal prospects. Even if it’s for the same pay, there’s got to be a good reason why you’d make that change, and more often than not, it has to do with the people you work for/with.
by bassale47 on Mar 18, 2009 7:41 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
It's not just Saban's propensity to micromanage
It’s his propensity to be a screaming asshat. Having worked for more than one boss who treated his employees like children, I can tell you it’s not fun. Paycheck be damned, it’s better to find an alternative.
From the Wikipedia file on Saban: According to Dolphins veteran lineman, Keith Traylor, he would have retired if Saban returned to Miami. To quote, “If the regime had stayed the same, I wouldn’t have come back. You just didn’t want to hear it. I can’t talk to you that way, don’t talk to me that way. We’re grown men…”

by billyzane on Mar 18, 2009 11:19 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I know
and I also know that Muschamp could actually go to Alabama, or anywhere else, for that matter. I would rather work for Mack than for Saban, but that doesn’t mean that Muschamp agrees with me.

How about the intelligence angle, LoC?
Alabama is one of a handful of teams we may play in the ‘09 post season. Could we have a little intelligence work going on? There’s no hiding each others defenses at that level; they both know all they need to know of structure and formations. But situations and players and propensities…those things which are hard to figure out, hard to plan for…when and how someone gambles…those things might be worth a little hospitality, a few drinks on the veranda and a catch-up session on water under the bridge.
There could be stark exchanges as well; we would want to know anything of value about OU; they would want to know the same about Florida and Mississippi and maybe a few others.
I think you got the dogs sniffing on the wrong trail and barking at the moon.

As you can see from my first post here
I was just having a little fun, by blaming Doug Gillett (whose work I really enjoy, btw). It sort of spiraled out of control after that.
To summarize:
I know Muschamp worked for Saban. While most people would probably hate working for a control freak like Nick, Coach Boom seems to have the personality to not be intimidated by him, or by anyone else for that matter.
Texas fans should probably try to quit obsessing over every job opening, real or imagined, that comes up for the next few years. Muschamp is either going to stay here or leave. Shocking insight, I know. It’s kind of like dating the prettiest girl in school. You can either enjoy it while it lasts, or you can spend your time worrying about her leaving you.
(Not that I would have any direct knowledge of that scenario from my own school days.)
I think whills is probably right. This is just two coaches getting together and discussing old times, and seeing if they can help each other out without giving away too much about their own teams. Happens all the time.
Could Muschamp go to Alabama? Sure. Is it likely? It doesn’t seem so to me, but I have absolutely no insider knowledge on this.
by Longhorn in Canada on Mar 19, 2009 11:28 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I never doubted the fun part.
I’m just suggesting there is always a little business involved.
Like you imply, Muschamps fate is his own and there’s little we can do about it.
About that prettiest girl in school and the fears of losing her, if indeed you were lucky enough to snag some time with her…and some of the fears expressed here…that maybe this is appropriate: Running Scared.
From that Wink Maestro, purely Texas.

As always
Roy says it best. We can always hope things turn out like at the end of Running Scared, but if not, I think Texas will always be able to attract a pretty damned good coach.

btw from that link to a 54b post above:
THE T-BONER (T-Bone Stallone): The sexual deviant. Not really a type of contributor as he’s pretty much one of a kind. After reading one of his comments or diaries, you usually feel an unnatural urge to return to your ignorant, blissful childhood while disinfecting your keyboard. His posts are always of a sexually explicit nature. In his world, sex is not only a sport, but a language, a currency, and a defense mechanism, as well. If he’s not challenging your manhood, he’s probably mutilating it. That being said, his clever whit is literary cleavage and he always gets the better of your prurient curiosity with a mastery of diction that would make even the most secular of readers repent.
