Yes!

I would be happy if closed on two or three of these remaining guys. 4 or more would have to cement this as one of the best recruiting hauls of all time.

Good times in Austin

I believe Texas is on the verge of building a dominating defense with all of the great commits. It is almost frightening to consider the dynasty UT could field with all of the current, commited and potential talent on the roster and the list Sunkist posted above.

If, and I say this with great hope, Mack and Will can land commits from White, Jeffcoat, Seastrunk and Hicks… lords I can’t even finish that statement because it both terrifies me and makes me orgasmic at the same time.

I think those 4

are the most serious possibilities. I would be curious to know Ghost of Big Roy’s (or other’s) opinion on those 4. Who’s most likely? And Who is most needed/wanted based on ability and/or position. Also, how would you rank this group if none of the remaining committ to UT?

Based on what I have seen/read, I would say the most likely is Hicks, then White, Jeffcoat and Seastrunk seem to be tied for third.

I think all 4 of them are big time. Hicks and Jeffcoat would be the final pieces to an absolutely amazing defensive class. And Seastrunk and White are game changers on offense. Seastrunk is also perfect to recruit alonside Chris Whaley who seems to be a bigger power back. His highlights are impressive.

Aye

Shead and/or Whaley running power to wear down the endurance of a defense with the amazing receiving corps to spread the backfield…

… then throw in Seastrunk as a game breaker who has the chance to break free every time he lays hands on the ball? I’m wracking my old man brain here to think of such dominant and balanced offense posibilities and I’m at a loss.

The only concern would be the synchronization of the blocking scheme to support these formidable weapons – they have the talent (and Matthews would be a tremendous addition, but I think his dad really will be set against UT, none the less I have a lot of respect for that young man) but do they have that synergy with the striking weapons to bear fruit?

by Grippe on Mar 20, 2009 7:54 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The consensus seems to be that Darius may be the next commit

which would be stupendous. If Hicks can make it in for the spring game, he could be coming to commit. Jeffcoat and Jake Matthews are distinct possibilities but may take their time. Many “experts” appear to think that Seastrunk is a LSU lean. IMO, White and Hicks are the remaining vital cogs in this class which is shaping up to be the best in Mack’s tenure.

I'll never forget ol' what's-his-name.

by Horntod on Mar 20, 2009 8:12 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

and that is what I cannot figure out

I see the same commentary that Seastrunk is leaning LSU, but something doesn’t ring right;

- He’s reported to have a fine GPA and interested in an Engineering degree; as a hiring manager I can assure you that if I’m looking at two employee candidates with the exact same resume in terms of experience, but one comes from LSU and the other comes from UT its an easy choice. The UT program carries significantly more weight.

- He details how he wishes to improve his speed and lateral agility to become the best. Yet if he’s part of an offensive scheme that heavily relies on the current RB corps and their highly touted 2009 QB recruit to play that same mindset, don’t you think the high and mighty defenses of the EES-EEE-SEE will have an easier time adjusting to a playbook that is thin on scheme and relies heavily on player innate ability? If I were in his shoes I’d want to go where my stand alone specialties are complimented by the rest of the striking weapons full spectrum abilities. Lets face it, Les Miles is building a fast program, but it’s damn near close to mono dimensional in building space. I’ll deflate that conference as much as the next guy but what they do, in fact, do well is develop defensive zone controls that channel the spread into containment areas.

It just doesn’t make sense, especially in light of the fact that the spread isn’t working in the NFL. He may be leaning towards LSU as his choice, but it would be one that I think would hurt him if he truly wants to achieve his full potential.

by Grippe on Mar 20, 2009 11:11 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

wait its a little hard to read your second bullet

So youre saying he should play for Texas b/c he can exploit lesser defenses in the big 12? Are you referring to Russell shephard or what? What do you mean monodimensional in building space?

agree about the engineering school

Sorry, I get a bit long winded

I’m not actually saying he should play for Texas, what I am saying is that he should not play for LSU because;

- Les Miles is building a spread offense of extraordinary speed. It is, however, heavily reliant on speed to create space and not mixing in power running. What it also does is reduce the durability of the striking weapons on offense. Remember the run and shoot experiment?

- I am referring to Shephard! He’s exciting to watch but why surround him with a talent pool that has similar striking style? Building space can be achieved through a variety of methods (e.g. Mike Gundy (I’M A MAN!)) but if Seastrunk is playing in a backfield where everyone else in it has a style similar to him, don’t you think Defensive coordinators will be able to adjust their schemes accordingly? SEC DE’s and OLB’s are going to eat him alive in that model. Three years of that kind of abuse will reduce anyone’s NFL draft stock.

I’d strongly encourage that young man to find a program that puts him in the position to capitalize in the areas in which he excels, and has ‘as strong’ abilities in all other facets. Could he exploit the B12 defenses more? Not if he’s in a program that, like LSU, builds a scheme with a narrow band of skill set. I do think Texas would be a better fit (the best fit), but so would USC or Oregon over LSU.

by Grippe on Mar 21, 2009 12:07 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

thanks for clearing that up

interesting thoughts. I understand what your saying about having variety in your offense.

by owenh on Mar 21, 2009 12:27 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

not so sure...

I certainly do want him to come to Texas, and I think he’d be fabulous here, especially with the talent we are busy surrounding him with…

however, I really don’t see the downside of a spread, zone-read heavy attack with Shepard and Seastrunk. They would be WVU w/Pat White and Slaton redux, but with a defense. I do see your point that it would be a one-dimensional (well, to be fair, two-dimensional, length and width, but unless Shepard really develops the passing part of his game dramatically, they would certainly not be in the same level there as Texas) attack, but, wow, what a dimension!

by Pflash on Mar 21, 2009 12:25 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree on White & Hicks

They are both very highly rated and seem to have been UT leans earlier on, while taking their time on any decision now that they have so many options. Those guys, to me, would be tougher to lose, because they wanted UT, and would have to be lured elsewhere, vs another recruit who may not have ever been a UT lean. The inevitable end of this, however, will be that Mack will land around 10 top 100 recruits, post one of the best recruiting classes for 2010, and people will still say he should have done better and that we don’t get all the recruits we should and that we have our best talent taken from us and blah blah blah.

Great addition

So this means, headed into their senior year of high school, that we currently hold commits from more top 100 recruits (7) than our top 5 2009 class had (6), with room for a couple more. Seems like a great job has already been done, with nothing left but to add to it. How many schools would love to be where UT is right now? If we can get a couple off Sunkist’s list at the top, and have a couple current commits move up the ranks their senior year, we could easily end up w/ 10+ top 100 recruits.

I wonder how Mack (or whoever)

keeps thes kids from becoming complacent as seniors. As a swimmer, this was not an issue for us, so I would need some insight from others.

This was the kid I thought we needed from this class to turn this group from large and very good, to great. I agree with the above that, if we get 2 or more of our remaininng offers to committ, we could be talking number 1.

And this early? That is unreal.

You are probably right....

that it is not much of an issue for most (although I am not sold that ALL of these guys think they will be playing Pro ball someday).

Still, there has got to be an “exhale” kind of factor.

I don't think

These kids would have gotten where they are right now if they werent internally motivated and committed to the game of football. I don’t see anyone getting complacent once they’ve been accepted. They still want to play for UT, they won’t see the field if they dont keep working

Nine outstanding offers, and 21 commitments already. I’m curious how this is going to go. I’m sure not all nine will end up choosing Texas, but I do wonder what would happen to the other five if four more were to commit.

I do kind of wish Evan Washington were to get a look. I think he’d be worth it.

9 outstanding offers. Only Whtie and Hicks come here. PERIOD

That said

With White and Hicks still a top 10 class, depending on SR. performance possibly a top 5 class. Every other team in America (outside of USC) would kill for a top 10 class. Even Pete Carroll would kill for a top 5 class wrapped up in March. Sure he will get one, but it would save him a few gray hairs to have it done this soon.

I think that we're a top 5 now.

We have the cream of the crop in Texas this year, with the possibility of 10 players in the top 150. I believe that we stand a very good chance of landing White, and he has the potential to be the top player nationally with his play-making ability. Throw Hicks in the mix and after looking at his film, he reminds me of a smaller DJ but just as fast. He has a knack for never giving up on the play, yet rarely overrunning his assignment. He’s also wuite the sure tackler and rarely makes arm tackles in open space. He’s your typical form LB. I think he could be one of the Top LB’s as well. With those two, we should have a top 3 class, barring any unforseen mishap during their senior years’.

Get off your knees Greg, you're blowin' the game.

I think you’re right about this year’s ranking. As it is, I think this class should probably compete for top-five honors, not that such honors are worth anything. If UT were to round out with four more of those remaining nine, it’d be top-three, possibly in competition for the mythical recruiting championship. Depending on which of those nine were to commit, the #1 spot could be sewn up before any of the other contenders needs a second hand to count its recruits.
