Around SBN: Carmelo Anthony, Amar'e Stoudemire Vow To Fit In With Lin

The big inning killed the Horns again yesterday as they dropped the opener to KU 5-4. Hopefully better things are in order today with Brandon Workman on the mound.

Sac bunt, then balk advanced him to third. Interesting play as the balk was called but Belt is allowed to swing. He grounded out to second and gets a do-over. Had it been a hit the Horns could’ve kept it.

Belt Ks

Moldenhauer DHing, grounds to pitcher

Ugh. Considering how important grabbing a lead has been for this team, not scoring early is huge.

Infield single, passed ball, error on Belt

Workman didn’t cover first on both the infield single and error.

I do not think KU should pitch to Keyes tomorrow.

He has driven in five of Texas’ seven runs this weekend. They guy is killing us, and no one else in the Texas lineup is getting it done.

Going to the 9th

4-3

This feels identical to 2005 where Texas lost 5-2 and 2-1 on Friday and Saturday…Need at least one run or we’ll drop 3 straight

man

you realize all three of the big Big 12 teams have already lost their series and are in danger of being swept?

A&M – lost two to Missouri
Oklahoma State – has given up a gob of runs in both games to Nebraska
and you guys are familiar with yourselves.

Pretty surprising. This conference is tough!

Offensive!!!

Folks we have issues with our offense this year. I really am curious if we have a hitting coach at this point because our guys do NOT have a clue when they’re at the plate. We are pulling our heads out, lunging and swinging at some terrible pitches. Very un-Texas like. Kansas tried to hit the ball up the middle every at bat and looks MUCH bettter coached than us. I’ve been to both games and it’s even worse in person. How can KANSAS be coached better than us?

This is not meant to be shock value. It is a legitimate opinion from a knowledgeable baseball person. I am scared for our season. We must start from scratch at the plate and un-learn our terrible tendencies before it’s too late.

Our pitching and defense are Omaha worthy. There are not 3 teams with better pitching and defense in the country. But, we have GOT to get our sticks going. For next year, we better look at some junior college kids that can rope because we’ll have our stud pitchers back again.

I'm as concerned as the next guy about the offense

But dropping the first two to Kansas isn’t all that shocking. They’re a good squad, at home, and always seem to give us fits. If we drop game three I’ll be pretty shocked, but it’s baseball…no one game matters all that much and any team with a good pitcher can beat any other team on any given day. Today the pitching actually let us down as well, particularly Workman giving up the 2 run lead then Jungmann and Wood giving up the go ahead run. I don’t mean to pump sunshine because there is cause for concern, but Texas lost 2 of 3 in Lawrence in 2005 and still did alright in Omaha.

I have only seen Texas play these two games this year,

but I am surprised to read you see the Texas defense as very good. At least this weekend in Lawrence the infield defense has been inconsistant at best. You are right, the team does not look well coached. Belt looks like he is learning first base on the job. There are visible communication problems on infield ground balls. The pitching staff seems a bit shell shocked by having to pitch around poor defense and no offensive support.

I guess this comes off as trash talk, but I don’t mean it in that way. I really am surprised at how poor this Texas team has played this weekend. I was expecting the usual UT squad. Very tight defense, a boat load of good arms, several sluggers and no one coming to the plate who looked incapable of making contact. That is not what I have seen.

This certainly isn't the Texas team we've seen this year

When they’ve lost it’s been because they haven’t scored at all. To be completely honest, 7 runs over two games has been enough to win pretty much every game this season. Belt is a good defender typically, and the offense has struggled to score runs at times but has been good enough at generating runs to be ranked #1 by baseball america. Like I said, Kansas isn’t a bad squad that always gives us fits so I don’t think there’s too much to read into the first two games. If we drop game three I’ll be concerned.

Maybe this is an unusal weekend for the Longhorns.

Maybe Texas is having trouble playing on the road on a grass infield? Or maybe this is just a bad streak. I don’t know. As I mentioned, I have only seen Texas play these last two games.

Sometimes you don't play your best

This is baseball, afterall, success is measured not in individual games or weekends but in the body of work over the course of a season.

This is one of the reasons college baseball is a tough sport to follow on a national level.

I go to pretty well every KU home game and I will hit the road this year for a couple of games. Just the same, I probably will see at most 20 teams play. And of those teams the only one I will see play more than three games will be KU. With almost no television coverage it just is really hard to evaluate other teams.

Two years in ago in my mind the absolute best player in NCAA baseball was Kyle Russell based on what I saw him do here in Lawrence in 2007. As it turned out he might not have even been the best player on Texas.
