Will The Barnes Rumors Start?

Kentucky is looking for a new coach.  Not sure why he would leave unless he thinks about the fact that only 9,000 fans show up for a conference game where Durant's Jersey is retired.

I assume he is not interested, but you never know.  He would be a good fit with Kentucky from a recruiting standpoint and style of play and he has the maturity and confidence to handle the crazy fans there.  Billy Clyde was a bad fit on the maturity level side.

Preface: I hardly follow college basketball, let alone UT basketball

But UT’s reputation as a football school precedes itself. He’s been here for 9 years now, and he came as a successful coach. He MUST have known that it would be a struggle to get equal attention for his b-ball squad, or even half as much attention as the football team gets.

Unless after 9 years he’s finally fed-up with it (after a #2 draft class?), I couldn’t imagine him leaving.

Like the sportingnews article said...

He has the best job in college basketball. His job is SAFE. He can recruit elite talent. Sure our fans aren’t as good as they could be, but everything else is in place. I personally don’t like the location of the Erwin Center. I wish it was even closer to campus. But anyways, maybe Barnes needs a new challenge? Even if he fails at Kentucky (I’m not saying he will), he will still be able to find a job elsewhere because he is a great coach. I’d like for him to stay at Texas.

Erwin Center

is in the perfect location. There’s abundant and ample parking a short walk away in all directions. The arena is not a top-tier arena in terms of seating arrangement, however. I long for some type of rock chalk jayhawk chant or other clever/dynamic cheers. As a fan, “Texas Fight” over and over just doesn’t do it for me. We desperately need something to cull fan involvement during the games. TXtwstr has laid the framework for this with his ubiquitous second half dance.

It's good for the alums and non-student fans

but not great for the students. I feel like if it were to be IN the campus area, attendance would be better. But you are right, the seating arrangement isn’t the greatest either with the students only sitting behind the baskets. If only they could change this…but would it fill with students? Probably not.

Hey I'm just being honest.

When I was a student, I’d bring my notes and study in line so I could get into the O-zone! I think people in general are lazy and that half mile DOES make a difference.

when the horns weren't good ... it was the city that came out to support

i don’t know how it is now
i moved away from austin a long time ago
but i remember being a pre teen during the running horns days
and playing for the east austin youth foundation
we’d always get free tickets and get to sit low in the stadium
got to visit in the locker rooms before the games
the horns were a huge part of my child hood

Gillispie isn't gone yet

Although right now, it feels like deja vu. First name on Kentucky’s list is still Billy D. Florida still worried about losing Donovan and are keeping one eye on Anthony Grant. Travis Ford’s name is being tossed around, but most feel he’s still too young. Barnes’ name is on the outskirts. Which naturally means we’ll see Mark ("Ethan") Turgeon as the next UK coach. Yikes.

by jc25 on Mar 27, 2009 10:49 AM CDT reply actions

Gillispie is a goner now

Gillispie fired

they mentioned that Rick Barned privately rebuffed UK’s offer last time

COACH BOOM BABY!!

by hookemkp on Mar 27, 2009 2:18 PM CDT up reply actions

yup

Rumor mill has Billy Donovan as the new UK coach. If that’s the case, UF would almost certainly hire Anthony Grant from VCU, meaning that Bama will still be looking for a coach. This would be good news for Texas Barnes fans.

Last year, Barnes told me he wasn't leaving.

This was a year ago (and therefore probably irrelevant), but I didn’t know about BON at the time, so I’ll share. I caught the same flight to and from Baltimore with Barnes and his assistant (whom I now know was Ken McDonald) the week after we were ousted from last year’s NCAA tourney. It was funny how they snagged the exit row and covered the middle seat with laptops and coats to keep it open. After exiting the flight, Barnes was checking his connection, so I approached, shook his hand and said something about us being out a few games early. He said we would get them next year. I proceeded to explain how much we appreciate what he’s done for the Texas program and that I hoped he didn’t have to leave for some (other) big time coaching job. His words were: Don’t worry, I’m not going anywhere. Of course, he could’ve told me anything he wanted, but it’s nice that he was honest despite D.J.‘s upcoming departure and the expectation of a down year in 08-09. Anyway, I think his departure was much more likely a year ago than it is with the current outlook. It’s still a relief to hear that UK will likely hire Donovan.

This is what happens ...

… when a football school has a quality coach in any other sport.

RB has raised the profile and expectations for Texas basketball to heights never before experienced in the men’s program. He’s a quality coach who has proven an uncanny ability to recruit both high-end and unheralded talent, and mold the results into a winning team. He changes his scheme to fit his personnel, and he develops players for the NBA.

Best of all, he’s kept UT out of the doghouse. No NCAA problems. Very few player scandals (the only I can think of are Boddicker’s girlfriend, which was off-season to boot, and a player a few years ago who lost academic eligibility, but then came back to succeed on the court and in the classroom (why is his name escaping me right now??)).

We know that Mack Brown will not leave Texas for greener pastures, because there are NOT any greener pastures in all of college football.

Basketball is different. Texas has amassed an amazing record and post-season performance over RB’s 11-year tenure. Plus, it’s in an increasingly competitive conference that put 6 teams in the dance and 3 more in the NIT this year.

But Texas is not a “legacy” basketball school, such as could be said of Duke, Kentucky, North Carolina, even UCLA.

So until RB has his national championship(s) at Texas, we will always be afraid. Every offseason. Very afraid.

Watch out, I bite.

PJ Tucker?

I don’t know if he excelled in the classroom, but I could be wrong. I figured that after winning Big 12 POY, he wanted to play basketball instead of trying to stay eligible, so he went to the NBA.

by vy til i die on Mar 27, 2009 4:03 PM CDT up reply actions

He was only ineligible one semester....

and that semester that had caused him to lose his eligibility, I had a class with him and he was in class everyday and paying attention.
He may not have been the sharpest knife in the drawer, but there’s no need for you to dog on the guy when you didn’t know his personal situation.

by SneezyBeltran on Mar 28, 2009 10:26 PM CDT up reply actions

I was not aware I was "dogging" on him

By “a semester” I mean “one semester.” And I didn’t mean to suggest he didn’t go to class. I’m guessing that when you’ve been playing basketball and going to school your whole life, you probably feel like you have a ton of free time available when you’re ineligible to play basketball. That would explain why I saw him hanging out outside of Jester so often.

by Texas Wahoo on Mar 28, 2009 10:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Sorry, I should have been more clear

My sentence could be interpreted either way. Just for the record, I’m a huge PJ Tucker fan, that guy worked his but off on the court.

by Texas Wahoo on Mar 29, 2009 1:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes, thank you!!

It was PJ. I seem to remember he pulled a 3.0 after the academic counseling guru chick got a hold of him … but could be wrong.

Watch out, I bite.

I like....

…how you throw UCLA in there like it’s “even UCLA might be a legacy school….” Well, with what they did under Walton, Alcindor, John Wooden, etc., it’s safe to say they are a legacy school. : )

by junglerules on Mar 27, 2009 6:26 PM CDT up reply actions

true, but ...

lately, they aren’t much better than Texas … last decade …

Watch out, I bite.

UCLA

- 11 National titles-
- National titles in three different decades
- In the last two years (2007 and 2008) they have been to more final fours than Texas has been in ever

Legacy in order = (UCLA (11), Kentucky (7), NC (4), Indiana (5), Duke (3)…not sure Duke really qualifies, only been great under one coach

Almost Legacy (Kansas (3),

by IUTex on Mar 28, 2009 12:05 AM CDT up reply actions

Why is Duke more "legacy than Kansas"?

And UCLA has been a great program, but all of their championships except one came under a single coach.

by Texas Wahoo on Mar 28, 2009 10:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Seriously?!?!?

You cannot argue the legacy of UCLA. That is a decade’s worth of work.

-rBr-

by run Bevo run on Mar 29, 2009 1:41 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm not arguing the "legacy" of UCLA

But the Duke has only done it under one coach seems somewhat silly to me when a team like UCLA won almost all of their championships under one coach. Although Wooden was certainly more successful than Coach K (and everyone else in any sport ever).

by Texas Wahoo on Mar 29, 2009 2:10 AM CDT up reply actions

You can say whatever you want about Duke.

But commenting about UCLA is like saying Bill Russel is “meh” because he won all 11 of his championships with the Celtics.

-rBr-

by run Bevo run on Mar 29, 2009 2:16 AM CDT up reply actions

Absolutly UCLA Belongs

I would agree Kansas before Duke, my mistake, Winning under two coaches along with winning three titles is a good concept. That leaves:

Indiana/North Carolina/UCLA/Kentucky/Kansas

I would say next of class

Duke/Michigan State/Louisville

by IUTex on Mar 29, 2009 7:06 AM CDT up reply actions

No, and I have seen UCLA make three final fours in a row.

by IUTex on Mar 29, 2009 7:07 AM CDT up reply actions

???

3 straight final fours for UCLA coming into this season, if I’m not mistaken. How is that not much better than Texas? We’ll just agree to disagree.

Legacy Schools Have an Intense Fan Base

1. Look at the game today, there are more Louisville fans in Indianapolis than Texas fans to watch many home conference games (including Durant’s jersey retirement).

2. During the middle of the NCAA’s their radio stations (the Zone) are not spending the whole day talking about spring football and the NFL Combine

3. I am sure Barnes would enjoy a large and loud crowd

4. It is possible to have intense fans in multiple sports (see Ohio State)

5. All the legacy teams travel in mass to see their teams play important road games

by IUTex on Mar 29, 2009 1:57 PM CDT up reply actions

I stand corrected on Ohio State

Maybe there is not an example….thank you for the correction.

One thing to note, except for UCLA, the other Legacy schools (NC, KY, IND and KS) all have an extreme basketball base in their state’s culture that came before multiple national titles (like Texas, Pennsylvania and Ohio were in football). John Wooden created UCLA on his own.

ESPN and the media have made the whole concept of legacy less important (which is hard for their fans to accept) Barnes and Texas receives as much TV exposure as an of the legacy teams. In basketball with only 13 scholarships it is much easier to fill a squad than it is in football.

CHANGE

A few of the traditional powers in football are falling apart (Michigan, Florida State, etc.) and some of the traditional b-ball teams are falling apart (Kentucky, Duke, ect. ). I think a lot has to do with the management of the athletic programs. Texas has a GREAT AD, and all of the other great sports programs do as well. The football programs pay for the b-ball programs now days, because the college b-ball ratings are dropping every year. I think as the years go by, the more football powerhouses will become quality b-ball teams (ohio state, usc, penn state, even….ou).

Duke…Yes I said they were falling apart, but who wouldn’t after the beat down Villanove gave them the other night. Duke is having a hard time selling the DUKE title to the b-ball elite right now (same with Kentucky),.

by Longhorns84 on Mar 27, 2009 11:23 PM CDT up reply actions

I am confident that Rick Barnes stays, but...

There are going to be potentially more high-end (or at least high-end conference) jobs open this year than I can ever remember:

Virginia
Alabama
Georgia
Kentucky
Arizona (unless dude wins out, then how can you deny him the job?)
Florida (potentially, although higly unlikely now, apparently)
Oklahoma St. (potentially – Travis Ford will NOT turn down Kentucky)
Oklahoma (potentially)
Connecticut (potentially)

Others?

So with that being the case, I think you are going to see at least one shocking departure somewhere opening up another big job that we haven’t really thought about. It’s going to be a crazy few weeks.

by A-Tex Devil on Mar 27, 2009 4:23 PM CDT reply actions

Kentucky

is the ONLY one we have to worry about.

by Longhorns84 on Mar 27, 2009 11:25 PM CDT up reply actions

I’m not that worried about Barnes leaving. It’s just going to be a crazy offseason if certain dominoes start to fall.

by A-Tex Devil on Mar 28, 2009 12:52 AM CDT up reply actions

ou?

really? a high end b-ball job. c’mon.

by Longhorns84 on Mar 27, 2009 11:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Rick knows how Kentucky Treated His Friend Tubby

why would he leave an elite program with a top recruiting class coming in to face the abuse in the Blue Grass State?

If it were North Carolina or Duke Ithink he would be gone.Let’s face it Kentucky has plenty of competetion for the top players now. They got to cherry pick in the past but no more.

by TCB Orange Dino on Mar 28, 2009 9:47 PM CDT reply actions

Looks like a done now

They are crazy in Kentucky. On their version of this site (A Sea of Blue) they are tracking a private aircraft that has been schedule to travel late today from Memphis to Lexington. Over 20,000 on another blog.

by IUTex on Mar 31, 2009 5:05 PM CDT up reply actions

The amount of traffic on ASOB is ridiculous

Even during non-crazy hiring times. I remember when BON would get twice the amount of traffic as their site; it now seems the roles are reversed.
