Cedric Benson: A Horn of a different color?
As many already know, Cedric Benson is in Houston this week visiting the Texans on his first leg of his FA tour of the NFL. While the Texans have made what is seems to be a corporate initiative to steer clear of 98% of Texas Longhorn football players, Kubiak may finally be softening. After talking with a good source privey to the visit, it appears that Cedric will soon be a Texan by weeks end and the tour may be over before it started. My source told me that both sides have agreed on a number (i.e. salary) as of late Monday and, if all of the talks and interviews between Benson and team officials go well, it would appear likely that the Benson will be back in the great state of Texas playing football.
Personally, splitting the backfield with a great young RB like Slaton AND making close to the same money as starting in Cincy, I think it is a great choice for Cedric Benson. The wheels are falling off in Cincy while the wheels are just getting aligned for the Texans with back-to-back 8-8 seasons. Moreover, it appears most of the great NFL teams these days have a 1-2 punch at RB and Slaton & Benson offer two different styles which should allow them to have their own opportunities at success. Plus, Cedric could make a paycheck for a lot longer in the NFL by not wearing down his body so soon.

That's awesome news
Maybe being closer to home will keep the heat on to not screw up again (not that it isn’t apparent he already learned his lesson).

I'm a little surprised
Cincy may be a gigantic clusterf*ck, but at the very least, it’s a starting gig with very little competition (at this point in time anyway). Further, Benson actually had modest success last year with the Bengals, which is a complete 180 from his time in Chicago, when everyone from the fans, the press, and even his own teammates hated him.
Signing with Houston would delineate him as a clear number 2 back behind Steve Slaton, which would likely entail a lot of time as a 3rd down back, something that would highlight Benson’s weaknesses (pass protection and catching the ball out of the backfield, according to the media).
On the other hand, the spotlight would be clearly off him, he’d get a chance to run behind a far superior offensive line than he’s had in either Chicago or Cincy, and he’d be playing close to home.
It’s a hard choice for Benson, and it’s quite possible that this may be his last contract in the NFL. I hope he comes back to Texas and plays spectacularly for the Texans, but more than that, I hope he makes the choice that will maximize his career in the NFL. If that means Cincinnati, so be it.

The Tour continues....
It appears that the money conversation wasn’t as solid as was thought late last night. My buddy just called to say Cedric just left town with no deal in place and he is off to visit the next team. Maybe the agent and team can figure something out, but when someone leaves, that is never a good sign. Oh well, the road goes on forev…wait…wrong college! :P

Cedric - a 3rd Down Back?
Should Benson sign with the Texans, there is no way he will be used as a third down back. While Slaton was a huge success last year, there can be no doubts that his size will not allow him to take the pounding that your average NFL RB must withstand. Slaton should get no more than 15 carries from the backfield per game if Kubiak wants him around for a while. If Benson has not lost a step, and still has the heart to be a work-horse (like he was at Texas), this combo could be very rewarding for everyone concerned. After the pounding Benson took at Texas, I really like the fact that he has been rarely used in a heavy manner over the past 4 years. At 26, Benson could do some damage if the heart is still there!

Really? Slaton had more than 1,200 yds rushing and about 380 receiving last year, not missing a game. I’d say he qualified as durable.

Hilarious

Where did that perception come from? Was it because they made the right decision by not drafting Vince Young?

With the release of Green..
Benson would be a good fit with the Texans. Though he wouldn’t be a starter, I think he would give the Texans a good powerful back. Slaton’s size, like Jabo said, is a major factor of why the Texans need another back to split the snaps with Slaton. This should be a very good pick-up by the Texans. Maybe they’ll make a play for Vince, since it seems that he will be the back-up behind Kerry Collins and possibly Chris Simms

Im a huge Texans fan and I think its a great signing if it happens. Benson has some size and can do some pounding between the tackles, which is a great compliment to Slaton.

huh

The wheels are getting aligned in Houston? The franchise that just outbid itself for the services of…. Dan Orlovsky? Houston and Cincinnati are both destined for mediocrity, and if I’m Ced, I go where the QB is better (Palmer > Schaub), and to the team that gave him the chance to resurrect his career. Cincinnati have Ced a chance when he was absolutely blackballed from the league. I think he would do wonders for his reputation if he showed some loyalty there.
Also, Slaton is a great player. Why go to Houston and ride the bench?

Ready for my Benson Texans' jersey
I think it’s great. Could increase the longevity of both him and Slaton. Benson was carrying the load by the end of last year for the Bengals, so you’d think he would go some place where he could get playing time. I’m not sure he would willingly sign some place to be the backup when he could be the starter in Cincinnati. So if he does sign, I’d bet we see pretty close to a split-time situation.

Might as well get a Benson Bengals' jersey

Well good for Cedric
Seems the Texans were simply looking for a backup, so why would Cedric relegate himself to the bench? Glad to see he got some money and a starting gig. Good for him. Always good to see good things for former Longhorns. Thanks for the link.

I'm glad he's staying put...
And who would have thought he would get a second NFL contract at this time last year? Congrats to Cedric, and here’s hoping he stays out of trouble.

Stupid move by Texans!
Although it would have been hard to pay Benson 7 million while Slaton earns about 15 percent of that, it would have been prudent to pay Benson, and use the draft pick that they now obviously must use on a back, on another position. Outside LB, defensive tackle, center, & safety are all serious needs. Now we can add power runner to that list.
Bird in the hand……

Maybe they can find the next Ahman Green...
Where’s Shaun Alexander?

ya...
no thank you. We already are wasting a good chunk of cash on the guy who ran out of bounds for a safety

Things will only get harder for Slaton now!
If I had a quarter for every young player that made a splash in the NFL, then was lost…well – you know the rest! Slaton’s rookie year was awesome and I look forward to seeing what he can do now that other coaches will be game planning to stop him. To keep the pressure off of Slaton the Texans must have a power back, or another wide receiver that requires a double team like Dre. I may be wrong but I do not remember an NFL team with a back of Slaton’s size as the workhorse in the backfield.

It's all on Schaub now....
The Texans season will rise or fall with the play of the QB. He’s shown signs of progress, but can’t seem to stay consistent (or healthy) for a full season. If he can get rid of the ball quickly (and he has a good 2nd receiver in Walter), then things will open up for Slaton.
How do NFL guru’s like Mel Kiper get away with projecting Slaton to the 4th-5th round? Did nobody watch this guy in college? A great pick by Houston and I love that he doesn’t rack up fluky injuries.

it has to do with Texans OL....they have been a bad group for number of years
and that trend will continue my friend…
COACH BOOM BABY!!

It's not even Schaub's play
it’s his health that will determine the fate of the Texans’ season. We will get another RB whether it’s the draft or a cheap FA signing.
This would be the year to create some damage in the AFC South. Jags came off a terrible year, Colts have a new HC, and the Titans lose Haynesworth and Collins may bolt to another team. Chris Simms hasn’t signed either I think, so they could be left with VY. Yikes!

I'm definitely not a Titans fan
VY is now “one of them”.

You need to get a copy of the 05 rose bowl
and watch it on repeat until that though never crosses your mind again.

With all respect to you and VY (in burnt orange)
What does that have to do with his NFL career?
by Shake on Mar 6, 2009 3:15 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
There is nothing wrong with being a great college quarterback...
Unless the Titans give VY some better receiving options, then VY doesn’t really fit their system as it stands. They have exceptional RBs, a solid TE, and probably the 4th worse receiving corp behind the Chiefs, Seahawks, and Vikings. VY played with exceptional talent at all positions while at UT and the Titans have some glaring holes. Kerry Collins only throws 20 yard passes because that is as far as his arms can reach. If the WRs don’t stretch the offense, then forget about VY flashing any running style out of the pocket.
by Robertpz on Mar 5, 2009 6:25 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I think..
the Vikes have better WR’s than the Titans. Bobby Wade was the Titans’ best a couple of years ago and he’s w/ the Vikes. Imagine if the Titans had Bernard Berrian, or even just Sidney Rice. The Chiefs have at least Dwayne Bowe, and receiving option Tony G.

I saw him last night...
Cedric Benson was on 6th street last night. I’m pretty sure he was wasted. I asked him if I could get a picture with him, and he couldn’t talk. lol.
