Cobbs: USC now at No. 1 ($)
Tulsa Central wide receiver DeMarco Cobbs has family connections to California, having been born there and an aunt who is a judge, a position that increases in importance in his life since he wants to major in criminal justice. The playmaker had been waiting for an offer from USC, which was recently extended. After taking the family considerations, along with the obvious athletic ones, into his decision-making process, Cobbs says USC is now his favorite.

I don’t really understand this “focus,” what is this, NCAA 09? Are there not enough hours in the day to recruit 2 players? Texas needs to still press them both.

hahaha
evidently. or you declare it’s time to switch focus to someone else when a recruit that you think you’re in the lead for announces someone else is his favorite
i just really feel that sometimes the texas staff has to be more persistent, it’s great to have kids come to your school who want to play for texas from birth… however some kids need to be convinced that the school is great and it’s the right fit for them. once a kids on a team, they buy into the school spirit and love them. mcfarland was texas’ to lose… but OU’s persistence won the mother over and they got a great DT. texas lost.
persistence and desire for a kid go a long way.

Evans' (aka M. Scott Templeton's) explanations about
OU’s greater persistence were discredited a long time ago. Just do a search and read our coverage about it. A lack of persistence on Texas’ part didn’t factor into the decision. It’s unclear what exactly happened with McFarland, but it wasn’t a lack of persistence.

i gotta say
I enjoy the wire more than anyone else alive (this is non-debatable) and I think I watch it about as closely as anyone else has (watched each season at least 5x) but I gotta say I never picked up the “M” in M. Scott Templeton until reading it a few times on this message board. My acolades go out to whomever picked up on that.
i actually read most everything i saw about the article, the best i saw was “every other recruit loves mack’s recruiting strategy, all of a sudden mack brown brags about his house and assumes macfarland is coming to texas? doesn’t sound right”
the biggest thing i noticed that impressed me was his mom saying she’d never step foot in oklahoma again, and the recruiting kept coming until he brow beat her into believing norman oklahoma will fit her son.
i don’t want a wake a dead beaten horse, but it stood out. and i do think texas has the opinion sometimes that goddamnit, we’re texas, who couldn’t help but coming to austin??

You probably should insert the word "potentially"
they got a great DT.
I imagine he has much chance of being great as he has being a bust.
-rBr-
yeah, well when we’re talking kids everything is potential ;-) they potentially got a great DT

Hate to disagree, but ...
I disagree. I say Spice McFarland had his eyes set on ou all along. Just using the old Ryan Perriloux/Darrell Scott workmanship on Texas, enjoying the drama to the bitter end.
no
I’m sure one will frown if the other commits..
What does an aunt who is a judge have to do with a CJ degree? CJ degrees are basically no more or less credible than a nonspecific major (general ed. degree). It’s not like it’s a sure-fire track for law school and an eventual appointment.
The point is that there is a connection in interest between Cobbs and his aunt that helps increase Cobbs’ connection to USC, helping make them, in his own words, the current favorite. The point isn’t that Cobbs is guaranteed to be on the track to becoming a judge.

Where is his aunt a judge, and is she a USC alumnus? I’m missing the connection.
by burntorangehorn on Mar 8, 2009 8:50 PM CDT up reply actions
In California, she went to USC
that probably needed clarification…

Well, the USC connection could be meaningful, but the location in California would be more important than simply being inside the state border. In the past eight years the places I’ve lived most are Maryland, California, Texas, and Iraq, and I would say that people in my area of California (Monterey peninsula) didn’t give a ratsass about USC, and were really toned-down in terms of football in general.

Interesting point
and sorry if I sounded like a d**k earlier. Not sure where his aunt is a judge, but the way he talks about it makes it sound like she is in LA or the vicinity. The other element in this is that Cobbs will have a problem making it out to USC until the official visits start. If he does in fact make it down to Austin for the spring game, as currently planned, that could have a huge impact on his recruitment and could be a chance for the Longhorns to wrest the top spot away from him. Hopefully, Connor Wood is in attendance, as well as Garrett Gilbert, and the two of them get in his ear about coming to Texas. Gilbert probably helped the Ross Apo recruitment by being at the practice Apo attended and convincing him to catch passes from the future Texas quarterback.

No, you didn’t come off as a d!ck, at least in my book. That was perfectly standard, clear-cut speech. No problem.
I will note that California, like Texas, is one of those states for which people who haven’t been there a whole lot don’t quite have a clear idea of how big it really is. For example, a lot of Marylanders around here can’t fathom the fact that it is farther from Houston to Dallas than it is from DC to NYC. By the same token, if Cobbs’ aunt were a judge in Stockton, that’d be about as far from USC as Lake Charles is from UT. I’m not saying you don’t get that, because you seem pretty well exposed to the ways of the world, but the author of the linked article might not.
Anyway, I do hope you’re right about the potential benefit of the timing of unofficial vs. official visits for Cobbs.

seems like we've been getting screwed lately....
by recruits whose brothers-sisters-cousins-hair dresser- works nearby or some crap like that. seems like family connections are more important these days than winning championships
thats why i have no remorse for darrell scott… look at that dude now hahahahahhaahhahah colorado? hahahahah
ya im bitter so what
USC hasn't been far from winning national championships
They were much closer than Texas in 2006 and 07. Don’t buy that argument. USC and Texas are recruiting on a pretty level playing field, despite USC getting the two recruits for 2009 that we wanted, which maybe gives USC an edge.

nah i didnt mean USC in general, i just meant recruits going to other schools like Clemson, OU,
Nebraska, Miami, etc.
If I was a recruit, I would have no problem signing with USC, they dominate their conference and contend for a NC every year

And...
You’re basiclly a rock star if you start for USC.
Webster's definition of irony: Keyshawn Johnson calling another football player selfish.
Pfffff! You're kidding....
…..or you’re not paying attention.
Top-100 recruits in past 5 recruiting classes:
USC – 53
Texas – 24
--- All roads to the Big-XII Championship lead through OU/RRS. It's not just another game! We're all about championships here. ---
How many times has USC won a battle straight up for the same recruit?
USC landing more top level recruits doesn’t surprise me considering their advantages, but I would expect that UT is very competitive with the kids who actually have a serious interest in spending time in Austin. Especially those from our area of the country.

I can name two from 2009 alone: Kennard and Jones.

Going back to 07
Which is a small sample but as far as I care to, I’m just bored in class, we’re 5-3 with USC. Of course the causality issue that’s going to set HC off is that I think only one was not from Texas or an adjoining state (Blaine Irby).
We lose essentially no recruiting battles for Texas prospects with USC, we’ll see if that carries across the border.
