5-star back interested in Texas
Another piece of evidence for those convinced Texas should spend more time and effort in OOS recruiting.

We all want to be courted by the prettiest of ladies (and Texas is one of them)......
I wouldn’t mind it if we went after him….but Mack wants to stick with the Texas boys first. We don’t have many scholarships left so we might sail or sink with Seastrunk depending on how long he takes on the recruiting process.

I doubt that.
Darrell Scott has lost 30lbs. (don’t you wish our s&c coach could help players lose weight?) and is ready to show his skills.

Your point being....
…..what? OG benefitted greatly from his weight loss. I’ll wager the same will be true for Darrell Scott. If CU doesn’t suffer 9 injuries to the O-Line like last season, they’ll have a formidable offense.

I believe his point was that Texas players CAN lose weight training with Mad Dog.
He was responding to your parenthetical aside, not the main statement. I thought that was pretty well clear.

it looks like he's out to collect offers
the more offers the more hype. I doubt he has any real interest especially when he says “I guess I know I dont want to play in an offense that throws the ball a lot”. Uh….yeah Texas throws the ball quite a bit last time I checked. He’ll give a lot of programs false hope and end up at USC, just watch.

50/50 throw/pass for Texas.
i actually can’t think of any teams that choose not to pass if they can. arkansas is probably one of the most run dominated teams in recent memory, but that’s cause they had a qb who couldn’t throw worth a lick.

What are we losing by extending an offer to him. I know it is just an article, but it seems like he wants to entertain the thought of coming to a real school

entertaining the thought
and I think that’s all it will come down to. I want guys at UT that have been entertaining the thought of coming to Texas since they were little kids. Maybe he has some real interest in coming to Austin but right now my gut is telling me he just wants another suitor to add to the list since he’s a top prospect.

until he visits, i don’t think we should offer him. same as most every other kid who shows interest in texas.
courting 2 5* backs can backfire on us, or courting the wrong 5* back… see john brantley and ryan mallett.. we secured an early commitment from brantley, and passed on mallett. by the time brantley changed his mind and went to UF mallett was already heading to michigan… snubbed by Texas coaching staff.
depending on how the staff feels about their chances with lache… i definitely don’t think they should start handing out offers to anyone who says they’re interested in texas.
by Displaced Longhorn on Apr 15, 2009 9:23 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe, but probably not
Even though he’s a “5-star” RB, he’s listed as 4.6 40. I don’t think he’s the type of back Texas is looking to complement the power RB’s in Cody Johnson and Chris Whaley.
As for Seastruck, I’d like to see him at Texas, but I’m not sure about his attitude. He’s seems to be stringing us along for the hype. He seems to like the attention and clearly seems to be inclined to not make any annoucement until signing day. He’s amazingly talented and definitely a TD waiting to happen on any given play, but I just don’t know.

Stringing along? He probably won’t go to his first class at the school he chooses until 16 months from now, and you’re saying the kid’s taking too damn long to make his choice? That’s kind of unrealistic.
by burntorangehorn on Apr 14, 2009 9:49 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, no kidding. God forbid Seastruck take advantage of the fact that a great many universities are interested in him and willing to show him around the campus and city. Are you saying at 17 you wouldn’t have taken the chance to travel the country?
He’s said all along that he’s not declaring until the Under Armor game next year (i think that’s the one), it’s just that ‘news’ services keep sticking microphones in his face every day asking him which school is his new favorite because people like us want to know. When he does give an answer (that we keep hounding him for), we can’t be upset just because he didn’t name us.

He has every right to take as long as he needs to decide where he wants to go. Look at Pryor, he didn’t decide until a month(?) after signing day. But Auburn, really? Yes, they had a fair number of really good running backs, but that went when the coaches left. Chizik for one is a defensive coach, and for two what did he do at ISU? If he was considering USC, OU, Florida, Georgia, WVa, and maybe Cal which has seen a string of good RB’s in Tedford’s stint, it might be easier to understand. Maybe he wants to start and not deal with working through the depth chart. I don’t know. He has every right to do as he sees fit for himself.
But what do you want? What has Mack stated/implied he wants? Kid who wants to be at Texas. Kid who’s dreamed of playing for Texas. Someone who’s talented, and someone confidently humble. Talentwise, he’s amazing and a good counterpoint to the RB’s we currently have. Is he the right fit for Texas, I don’t know.

Why not Auburn?
1. You’re playing in the SEC, which is right now considered the preeminent conference in CFB
2. You’re almost guaranteed to start from day 1 and be the focal point of the offense
3. The last time Texas placed a back in the first round of the draft (Ced Benson), Auburn placed two (Ronnie Brown and Cadillac Williams)
4. You’re playing for an OC who’s also pulled off that double stuff (Gus Malzahn, who coached Darren McFadden and Felix Jones)
5. You’re still going to a football crazy school in the south, albeit one with not as much prestige as Texas
6. You get to experience a new environment rather than the one you grew up in/near to all your life
I agree, let’s cut the kid a break. He’s making a very important decision, and he wants to take the maximum allotted time to make the decision. What’s wrong with that?
by jc25 on Apr 15, 2009 8:51 AM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
re: this "stringing along" meme???
for one thing – it is still the summer BEFORE the kid’s senior year. Not committing prior to that is by no rational definition: “stringing along”.
for another – even if it was accurate, why does that imply an “attitude” issue? Sure, we can look back at Perriloux and shudder and say he had an ‘attitude’ problem. But to try to fit that on every kid who doesn’t immediately jump on board the Longhorn Express is just plain silly. For all I know Lache Seastrunk may have a horrible attitude, but I don’t know him, and I’m betting you don’t either, so what would I base that on? He’s just a kid trying to make a huge decision and he’s being pulled in a lot of different ways by a lot of different people. That does not equate to a bad attitude. If he comes across in the recruiting process as a “me first” guy, I would think that’s a rational outlook – HIS recruitment, and HIS decision, is ultimately a family, friends, etc. deal, but it’s primarily a “Me” issue. Where will HE be the happiest, be empowered to achieve the best? Just because we’re absolutely positive that “UT” is the correct answer to all those questions does not, unfortunately, mean that he is…
Also, becoming interested/enamored of a school because your PASTOR’s son is employed there seems to me, at least, to signify that he’s a pretty solid citizen – I’d rather take my chances on someone who’s influenced by his pastor in a positive way than not… no guarantees, of course, but it’s surely not a negative sign.

After noticing his jersey
Maybe he does have good intentions since he goes to a Christian school. It’s hard to tell on some kids though because they spend months being so happy that Texas is interested in them only to see them turn around and have them push Texas aside for somebody else because Texas doesn’t have swagger or they want to win a national title. We’ll see I guess.

Playing the game
Sure, guys like Jones may just be collecting offers or taking free trips, and the chance that he lands here may be small. But if you get him here and make a good impression, he’ll tell everyone about us which will raise the visibility of our program back where he comes from. Other guys who are better prospects for us may decide to come see for themselves and that could mean landing more out of state talent. And who knows, maybe every so often a big star will fall in love with UT and decide to come here. It does not appear to me that there is much logic involved in their final decisions.
It’s not like Texas does not have resources to play the field.

OOS
I believe we should recruit more OOS kids. I’m not saying we have to put all of our resources into it, or even a substantial amount. But I think it’s worthwhile to look at the top prospects, see who’s interested and offer them. If they don’t make a visit by a pre- determined date then rescind the scholarship. That simple. TX will always be our bread and butter. But we should also take more of a look at other places when the opportunity presents itself. If he’s the number 11 guy in the entire country and he has interest in UT then we should probably have interest in him.
by PineypointG on Apr 15, 2009 11:32 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Are we not doing that now?
Isn’t that what we are doing with Hicks? Isn’t that what we did with Scott, Jones, and Kirkpatrick? Just because it didn’t work out doesn’t mean we are recruiting OOS kids.
You want us to recruit more OOS kids, but then you yourself limit the number of OOS kids we recruit by suggesting we only recruit kids who are interested. That is exactly what we are doing and what we should continue to do. All those aforementioned guys had legitimate interest in our program and we recruited them.
Just because Malcolm Jones randomly says he “wishes [we] would show a little more interest” doesn’t mean we crapped the bed on recruiting OOS kids. This is probably the first time he has shown interest in our program, which would explain why we haven’t been paying attention to him.
We have been recruiting OOS kids, we just only go after ones that we actually have a shot with and that fulfill a particular skill set or position that we cannot find in state.
Now if you suggest that we need to do a better job with CLOSING on the OOS kids that we do recruit, then I would agree with you.

RE:
I said more OOS. I realize that we currently recruit OOS kids. The more we recruit the better our chances of landing one. And when we land a big time OOS guy in a particular area it will boost our chances of getting more recruits from that area. It could be Florida, Cali, Midwest, doesnt matter. In this particular case, I dont know if recruiting this kid would have any impact on L. Seastrunk’s recruitment. Im saying this as a general principal. Once again, Texas should always be our first and secong priority, I just believe putting a little more emphasis on the national front will only improve the program and our profile
by PineypointG on Apr 15, 2009 11:58 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Furthermore,
A downside to OOS recruiting that hasn’t been mentioned yet, but that is constantly spouted by Mack, is the possibility that increased efforts on OOS will also harm in-state recruiting efforts by alienating Texas HS coaches, players, and/or schools from Longhorn football.
To wit, in a good article found in ESPN the Magazine:
As Miami waned, so did interest in its players. The burnout started when coach Butch Davis took his scouting smarts to the NFL after the 2000 season. Although successor Larry Coker led the team to title games in 2001 and 2002, he ultimately couldn’t restock his ranks quickly enough to keep up with all those Canes going pro. By the time the team fell out of the national rankings four years later, several key components of its can’t-miss recruiting formula were no more. The crumbling Orange Bowl no longer impressed prospects; the school instituted much tougher admissions standards; a focus on national recruiting cost the Canes their monopoly on talent-rich South Florida.
While I agree that Mack has a responsibility to recruit the best talent to help Texas football, there’s no mandatory rule that invalidates the previous sentiment should Mack choose not to focus on OOS talent. Rather, it’s possible that early targeting of a player like Malcolm Jones will harm, instead of help, Texas’ overall recruiting efforts by say, hurting Lache Seastrunk’s feelings.
There’s no definitive right or wrong answer on the subject (at least, I don’t think there is), but you definitely have to look at both sides of the coin here.

But what about a year like this?
I prefer the coaches’ current strategy, though it does make for a rather boring and disappointing signing day. This year we could literally be in a situation where we have more commits than spots on the roster by the end of the summer. How can we be out there trying to land some signing day decision when we don’t have a place to put them? I think the amount of OOS recruiting we do should be based on what we need, not just on handing out offers to guys who ask for them.
I like our strategy of only giving out 30 or so offers. If you get a Texas offer you are really special. Ok, we sign guys that we know we can get who aren’t blue chippers, but those are at the very least loyal backups rather than guys who will transfer out the first time someone passes them on the depth chart.
I think our strategy is good this year. The state has very few positional holes talent-wise and the coaches obviously did their homework since most of the class is already committed. I am sure they are already aware of the talent in 2011 (and 2012) and if they see a need that can’t be filled in-state they have already been talking to OOS guys that look promising.
I have to think the attitude of saying ’we’ll take the best in state and beat your team filled with guys from across the country’ has to be a pretty good way of selling the program to Texas high schoolers. If Mack can finally turn it into titles rather than a collection of a lot winning seasons, then it can turn into a juggernaut that will last past Mack’s tenure.
