Horns Lose, Get Closer To Conference Crown

[Update:] The bats weren't working again but solid enough pitching and a number of Texas A&M mistakes gave the Horns enough scoring to take a 5-4 victory. We think that should just about seal a top eight national seed, and one more OU loss -- losing 5-1 in the 7th -- (either today to OSU or next week to Texas A&M) would seal the conference title for Texas. Regardless, the Horns have come a long way from last season and are now 17-4-1 in the last 22 games.

Aggy starter Ross Hales was absolutely brilliant in a 3-0 victory in Austin. That pretty much sums up the game. Cole Green was alright and Brandon Workman was nearly perfect in long relief, but Texas' offense just couldn't get anything going. There are days like that in baseball, time to move on.

There is good news, though. Texas still holds a 1 game lead over Texas A&M and a victory today would eliminate them from the conference crown. In addition, KSU lost again at home to Tech, so a Texas victory today would nearly seal the deal, pending one Oklahoma loss (OSU today, Aggy next week). This time it's Texas' turn to have a freshman phenom on the mound in Taylor Jungmann. Austin Wood and Dicharry should be available to pitch in the later innings. It's a 2 o'clock start since there are no flights to catch this time and it'll be broadcast by a Fox College Sports, whatever that is.

Here's how Texas wins the conference:

Win today: 1 OU loss in the next 4
Lose today: KSU lose 1 of the next 4, A&M lose 2 of 3 to OU, OU loses to OSU then wins 2 of 3 against Aggy

We’re ready for the game here. Right now Fox is showing Mizzou beating the Gooners in the B12 Softball Championship.

Mouth's convincing evidence was

that Anders immediately turned for the dugout, like he knew he had the out. He wouldn’t do that otherwise = aggy honor code and all.

Texaggy reality:

Red Fishin Ag93 says:

We cannot allow a bad call to take us out of the game mentally, and we did.

We have battled through two BS calls in this series. Let’s not downplay what has clearly ruined the mentality, here.

One can only take so much of a clear disadvantage before mailing it in. We’re not a good enough team to overcame game changing decisions.

Nobody is that good.

It's like a midget wrestling match:

you know you shouldn’t watch, but it’s just too hilarious not to:

Texaggy misery

And if I have to listen to Dave South doing PBP, I might as well go for total immersion. Now he says the aggy television crew is calling the play at first inconclusive.

by amorphous on May 10, 2009 3:18 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

how has jungmann looked?

he’s not being given much attention on the aTm feed (shocking, I know).

by amorphous on May 10, 2009 3:20 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Aggies have threatened in each inning but he's been able to work through it

His pitch count is high, doubt he goes more than 5 or 6 innings

by 40AS on May 10, 2009 3:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

that's good

i’d rather him need to work than cruise through. he’ll be better game-tested.

by amorphous on May 10, 2009 3:23 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

although, to clarify

i’d rather him be able to get through 6 or 7 than just 5 or 6,

by amorphous on May 10, 2009 3:24 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

agreed.

But we have the luxury of a rested bullpen today since Workman was able to finish yesterdays game off.

by 6th street on May 10, 2009 3:25 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

workman was great

gave us a chance, all we could have asked for

by amorphous on May 10, 2009 3:26 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Gametracker

shows he hasnt been missing many bats. Only 1 K so far today. But he’s been good all season at battling through innings where he gets himself in trouble and minimizing damage. 5 solid innngs should be sufficient today to get us to Dicharry/Wood to close it out.

by 6th street on May 10, 2009 3:24 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The 4th was a quick inning

Should be good to go for two relatively quick innings

by 40AS on May 10, 2009 3:25 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

sure. 6 would be great

but with a 5-0 lead already, Id be happy with 5 solid scoreless innings out of the freshman.

by 6th street on May 10, 2009 3:26 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I see no reason why that isnt a reasonable expectation.

He was nothing short of spectacular once he settled in yesterday.

by 6th street on May 10, 2009 3:29 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

agreed

especially if dicharry or thomas or even carrillo could get us a couple of outs here and there if necessary when we get to regionals KNOCK ON WOOD

here’s what i’m thinking: brandon belt makes his triumphant return to the mound leading texas to a cws championship. yeah, awesome.

by amorphous on May 10, 2009 3:33 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Haha

Wouldn’t be shocked to see him pitch in the big xii tourney, didn’t David Maroul pitch 5 or 6 years ago when we were short on pitchers and not needing to win?

Error on a grouner to SS

Then the SS turns around casually, Rowe advances to second

along with their other two errors and the HBP.

Two quick Aggy singles

One an infield single that Jungmann got a piece of, one barely passed a diving Loy

by 40AS on May 10, 2009 3:36 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Another single

Bases loaded, nobody out…another ball that wasn’t hit hard just blooped into center

by 40AS on May 10, 2009 3:38 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Phew

Caught a break there, just missed an extra base hit

by 40AS on May 10, 2009 3:43 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

And Dicharry in for Jungmann.

things came a little unraveled for Taylor there. It didnt look good from the start. He wasnt missing as many bats as he had been in his previous outings. It was only a matter of time before the balls started finding holes.

What do you think we can expect from Dicharry?

Can he give us 3 innings? Or should we expect 2, with Wood pitching the final 3?

way to battle today boys.

raced out to an early lead, and the bullpen held in there long enough to keep it together.

not the prettiest of victories, but in the end, a win is a win. 2 of 3 from the aggies, in a series where our bats didnt hardly come alive and our pitching wasnt as spectacular as it has been….Ill take it.

I dont see any way we dont end up with a top 8 national seed.

by 6th street on May 10, 2009 5:10 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

huzzah!

here’s to a good big 12 regular season, no matter how it finishes. we have the pitching and defense that can match with anyone in the postseason. just need to get the offense to be timely.

by amorphous on May 10, 2009 5:10 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs
