Darius White Update ($)
The latest twist in the Darius White recruitment is the move of Oklahoma to the top or near the top of his list. In his own words, he's liking Oklahoma, calling them "very good," while only saying that "Texas is good." He also says that he "doesn't have an order" right now and seems content to let the process play out -- a decision does not appear as imminent as it did few weeks ago.
Is it panic time yet? Not sure about that, but it is definitely time to wonder what it is about Oklahoma and their future that appeals to him so much. There's going to be a pretty decent quarterback in Austin to throw to White over the next few years.

Recruiting Favors and Dominique Sanders are KEY for now
I happened to be sitting behind Darius White and his parents at the Spring Game. Darius was with Favors and Sanders. They didn’t pay much attention to the game and were just texting, etc.
It is obvious since these three guys are good friends and went to so many spring games together that they would of course like to stay together for college ball. Since we haven’t shown much interest in Sanders or Favors, (not sure why we haven’t gone after Favors since he seems like a stud) and Stoops will say whatever Darius wants to hear about Favors and Sander to get Darius there, I’m sure he is probably listening to the tempations of Stoops. If Stoops does offer Sanders I could see the trio signing there. OU hasn’t offered Sanders, and I guess the bidding war for Darius White is currently OU has offered Favors and UT has not. I’m not saying there is anything wrong with this recruiting by OU because it seems that Favors and Sanders are legit Div. I players. UT is probably more truthful to White about our ability to offer Favors and Sanders since we already have an amazing class and we are simply out of schollies. OU, on the otherhand, gives out offers en masse and sees where they land. OU has probably made 2 times more offers than UT.
I hope that once Favors and Sanders find the right fit for them, that Darius will feel more comfortably looking out for himself and not feel guilty that he was lucky and talented enough to get a coveted UT offer and his friends unfortunately did not. I’m sure Favors and Sanders will be thrilled for Darius to go to UT, but it is still hard to say good bye to HS friends to pursue the best college. In the end Darius will probably figure out that it is ok to let his friends play where they fit best and for him to come to Texas where Gilbert will be hooking him up for a Heisman. Also, Darius is very close to his mother and in the end she will make sure that he picks the best school for him, nobody else. Since that is Texas (of course-my opinion) I think he will end up in burnt orange but not until Favors and Sanders find their homes.

You know...
I want Texas to stick to their guns here. As much as I want Darius White to come play for Texas, I don’t want Texas to have to offer his HS teammates scholarships just so we can get him. I want us to recruit who we want to recruit and not let high schoolers push us around. If Favors and Sanders aren’t the type of players Texas wants, then we shouldn’t offer them anything even if it means getting the best WR in the nation.
Anyways, I still have high hopes that he comes here. Lots of people say he’s just going around to other schools to help his teammates get more exposure. I hope that is true because that’s at least a legit thing to do.
D. White stress level has gone a little bit more up and if D. White doesn’t come, I’d really be desperate for Lache.

I hope this is the case...
I posted earlier that I notice D White wasn’t putting us as this favorite anymore and that Stoops was coming after him hard per OB. I hadn’t thought of this angle since I thought Favors and Sanders weren’t on OU’s radar either. While I wouldn’t be surprised if Stoops took both Favors and Sanders in hopes of getting White, this would at least be within the rules. I hope that the three of them make their decisions separately, each choosing what he feels is his best option rather than trying to go to the same place where one of them may end up not getting the best shot of playing.
My bigger fear is that outside offers are being made, especially since it seems White’s mother will play a big role. I can’t help but think about the JM situation last year, where all signs point to his mother finally pushing him to OU for some reason (I am not saying it was illegal or dirty or anything, Displaced and Wells.) after she initially raved about Mack and Texas.

Favors
I heard he said the crowd was bigger at the ou spring game, but everything I’ve read said that UT had a bigger crowd.

Attendence at Spring Game = Prestige of Team/Things to Do in City – Weather
Lincoln & Columbus all rock the spring game when it’s not 30 degrees. And, how many Toby Keith concerts can you actually go to in Oklahoma before you’re ready for some football (or anything).

WTF
What is the deal with HS players trying to get schools to recruit their HS buddies now days?
by Longhorns84 on May 14, 2009 1:48 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
WTF
Because…one usually likes to hang out with one’s friends, and that’s easier to do in college when one goes to the same university? It’s a novel concept, I know.

well..
I would think one would appreciate getting a scholarship offer and not worry about what their friends do. I would also hope one would pick a school that one wants to attend instead of a school that will offer one’s friends.

I have never been to a spring game before but I didn’t think it was that fun. It was nothing like a game day. No where near the energy, crowd or vibe. The Dunbar Trio looked bored, and tell the truth, I was too. Plus, our field was so messed up with the new turf renevoation and we were on the south end near all that mess. At least Shipley was sitting next to White before the game and they seemed to be having a very good repore. When the game was about to start Shipley went down onto the field.
There was an obvious awkward tension between the guys….But if you think about the fact that your friends just did not get offered by the school you all really want…that kind of sucks. I think it is cool that Darius’ mom brought them all together to check out not just UT but other schools too. She is probably trying to look out for her son and his friends, and that is really pretty cool and everyone should be lucky to have a mom or a friend with a mom that would help you in this incredibly high pressure and important matter. For a lot of these kids it is hard to just get to the school for a visit.
When I said D White’s mom was important, I in NO WAY meant to imply that she was like Mrs. McFiction McFarland and I wouldn’t at all imply that she was doing anything except what all of us would do for our kid. She was right behind Darius and they were just sharing drinks/food back and forth. I could just tell that they had a super tight great relationship. I’m sure he and she are both trying to weigh their options and see if the guys can play together….but I can’t imagine in the end that playing together would outweigh Darius playing at the best school and gettnig the best education for him.
What do I know having only observed someone for an hour at a fball game, but I just do not think that she is like Mrs. McFiction McFarland who allegedly “loved” her son so much she pimped him to OU and that hack job Thayer Evans and made him look like a complete wussy idiot when the truth came out. I’m sure Darius’ mom would not appreciate the comparison. I think he will be at UT in the end….just be patient.
I’m more concerned about getting Seastrunk to tell the truth….We NEED him!!!!

spring games are all boring
now that all the coaches are keeping things “vanilla” and hiding things.

I remember
when I was 18 and how often I changed my mind about what I wanted out of life. I can not begin to imagine how much pressure these kids must be under to pick a certain school. I am willing to bet that they get asked every day if they have made a decision or if they are leaning one way or another. From the video I have seen of Darius, I hope he makes the decision to play out his college career in Austin. For you conspiracy theorist, if he does not end up in burnt orange it could just mean he liked the other school more.

When I was 17..
I knew 100% that I wanted to go to Texas. While I was enrolling as a student and not a student-athlete, I could’ve gone to quite a few other schools had I applied.

Yeah But
You weren’t being pressured by the enrollment process, or being offered illegal benefits, and your decision wasn’t tracked by media outlets and 15 different web sites.

I agree...
Where White lives, he has to be surrounded by alums and fans of Texas, OU, A&M, TCU, Tech etc… It has to get annoying at some point.

Gilbert made his decision pretty quickly...almost immediately.
And I think he got much more attention than White.

Truth Be Told
Texas will never “out recruit” Oklahoma to the point that we are so superior athletically that game-day coaching, schemes, inuries, and player development will not determine the final outcome. Thanks to Mack’s brilliance in the recruiting arena – the same can be said for OU. For the forseeable future – while recruiting is very interesting – I look for the Texas/OU recruiting classes to cancel out over time, provide the talent to keep both programs at an elite level, and stress the importance of getting “Muschamp like” coaches into Texas.

we can’t get them all & we don’t need to beg anyone to suit up for the Horns.
I say Seastrunk ain’t coming to Austin, get used to it.

Seastrunk
I really thought that when UT promised Whaley he would be the only 2009 RB offer, we did it because we had Seastrunk lined up for 2010. Seastrunk always said he wants to keep his announcement until the Army All American game, so I’m not giving up until he puts on a hat of another color on that day. I think he’s just having fun looking. I can’t imagine him choosing Auburn over us. Maybe LSU to play with Reed.
by jkovach on May 14, 2009 3:08 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
That brings up an interesting point....
If White is now leaning toward our brethren to the north, does Texas begin to heat up things on Reed again?
by NeTexHorn on May 14, 2009 3:31 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Unless White commits to another school soon, I think Texas keeps all their focus on him.

This isn’t EA Sports. UT doesn’t have resource limitations that would mean they would have to sacrifice any intensity toward White in order to pour intensity on Reed.
by burntorangehorn on May 15, 2009 4:35 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yea, but I would tend to believe
that if a premier prospect is considered to be close to committing and that fills the final hole at a given position, then the program would tend to cool its recruiting of other players at the same position. If I remember correctly, GoBR mentioned in one of his articles that Reed was one of the players that had not had much contact with UT since the WR positions filled so quickly. And if this were EA Sports, I think we would have all pushed reset on the night of the Tech loss.

It is imperative that we get White.
Orangeblood’s wisdom (oxymoron?) is that he is the best Texas HS wide receiver since Roy Williams. That said, there is no way that we offer his teammates, what a dangerous precedent and so transparent. He may be taking his time to create more traffic stopping by Dunbar to augment his teammates’ visibility. Also, he is a top 5 national recruit; naturally, he’ll want to create some suspense; they all do. I believe his parents are in our corner, his girlfriend will be attending UT and the potential Gilbert-to-White combo has got to weigh heavily. Way too early to melt down. I think we prevail.
I'll never forget ol' what's-his-name.

Package Deals
I can’t see a the coaching staff at a prominent program offering two players that would not otherwise be offered with the hope they might get the commitment of a third player they really want. One maybe, but not two. I also think it unlikely that a five star, best in the nation at his position player is going anywhere other than one of the top national programs even if he and high school teammates have said they would like to play together..
According to Rivals only Tech, A&M and TCU have offered all of the Dunbar three. I would bet White does not commit to any one of those three and I would bet he is down to UT and OU. The problem I see is that we are probably not going to offer Sanders and an offer to Favors would probably come only if we miss on both Hicks and Nelson. OU presumably would take Favors regardless of where White goes. It is not a stretch to see them offer Sanders who is a top 100 player in Texas and has a respectable offer list, if they thought it might tip the scales on White. While I think Seastrunk is the missing piece to the 2010 class, losing White to OU would be about the worst finish we could have for this recruiting class
by Arroyo Grande on May 14, 2009 4:12 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
In Mack I Trust
When we got Wilson I was ready to take this recruiting class over any other in the nation no matter who any other school ends up getting. This class is rock solid!! I don’t think losing D White would change my opinion on that. Who is our top recruit still pending? Jeffcoat is amazing, but we have Orakpo and now Wilson. Seastrunk is amazing, but we have Whaley and Shead. White is amazing, but we have a lot of talent at WR in the class already. Hicks amazing, but we have Jackson and Benson. I just don’t know who to pick. Matthews would be a nice line pickup, but we rocked line last year. So, who do we need the most? I think a true elite RB with shake and bake. Whaley is so big I worry and Shead may be a phenom, but we just don’t know because of his competition. Seastrunk in the backfield with Whaley playing behind the talent at line and Gilbert at QB with all the wr talent—Unstoppable—National Championship all over it. Can’t wait!!

Agree about the depth
And that has been said about this class already. Even if complete right now, it is a top 5/10 class. As for who we need most, I don’t know (though I think GoBR has written about who HE thinks, and that probably means more).
I will say that who I hope we get is Lache. I would just really love to see a truly elite, nationally acclaimed running back in our backfield. We haven’t had that in a while, and our steepest competition has often times had more than one at a time in their backfields.
Each has their own upside, and it would be nice to load up with all that talent, but if I had to pick one, I think it would be the tailback.
