Matthews Extending Timetable ($)
Fort Bend Elkins offensive lineman Jake Matthews has been vocal about wanting to end the recruiting process as soon as he is able to reach a decision. Early in the process, it looked like that would happen in the spring, though he is now saying that he needs more time to reach the needed comfort level. To reach that comfort level, he plans on trying to take another visit to Austin and will also try to make it out to see USC, a little bit of a departure from previous statements.
For the past month he has been maintaining that Texas and Texas A&M are the leaders, while mentioning USC as a sort of distant third, but it looks like the Trojans will get another visit from the talented lineman and now have an increased chance of landing Matthews.

Waiting for A&M
If he’s interested in A&M, he should wait until at least midway through the season. It’s very possible that A&M will endure back-to-back losing seasons. This would bring major changes, including changes in the coaching staff. It also would mean playing for a perenial cellar dwellar that struggles to keep up with Baylor. Who cares if you’re immediately on the two-deep in a pro-style offense if you’re getting beat by Louisiana-Monroe.
Not sure how much of a leash Sherman has
He didn’t seem like the right choice when he was hired and doesn’t seem like the right choice now, but the offense could make improvements if the offensive line can stay healthy, which might buy Sherman more time. If Matthews is truly smitten with Sherman and his ability to coach offensive lineman, maybe he thinks there Sherman has more job security than you predict. Only time will tell, I guess.

Plus he could sign and rescind his LOI if Sherman gets the axe.
Or he could man up with Texas who has a bright future.

He wouldn't sign an LOI until Signing Day in February.
Anything until then is a verbal.

You are right, they will fire him way before February.

Problem with that logic
is that the OL is projected to be really, really bad this year, even if they stay healthy. Bad year for A&M, plus playing like one of the worst OL in the conference (potentially) has got to hurt their chances the longer he strings this out.
The fact that he is still considering UT (planning to make another visit to Austin), is great news considering the speculation lately that he is a big Aggie lean.
Comfort Level.
It sounds like he does not really want to go to A&M regardless of his comfort level with their present coaching staff. This may be one of those unusual cases where time is on our side.
I agree.
I think he just doesn’t want to go to A&M too. He definitely wants to get more comfortable with Texas and USC and then make a decision on those two schools!

Any Aggie Indecision = No to A&M
Lets face it, the Aggies are not your typical university. Where else could getting %% by a cheerleader turn a large percentage of their student athletes’ stomach? I may be over simplifying – but you will either fall in love with Aggieland – or look at it with a surreal perspective that rivals Alice and Wonderland. Matthews reconsidering Aggieland means he will not go there. This logic does not apply to second tier prospects that go there because it is their best opportunity.
On the bright side
If he did choose College Station in Wonderland, he could get all of the do-nuts he ever wanted.
