Phil Steele Top 5 for 2009
Per the Herd on ESPN - here is Phil Steele's Top 5 for next year: (Mag out in prox one month)
- Florida Gators
- Your Texas Longhorns
- USC
- OU
- Penn State
Other snippets:
- Nebraska to win Big 12 North
- Notre Dame, Rutgers, Illinois, Penn St, Cal in top surprise teams
- Hates - Oregon
In addition, Cowherd picks Texas over OU. I cannot wait for the start of the season! Gators seem unbeatable this year - but if anyone can do it - its the Horns.

I’ll stab myself in the eye if we have to watch OU lose to Florida again.

I always enjoy watching OU lose
Let’s face it, Florida, Texas, and OU are all going to be really freakin’ good next season.

OU would need to go undefeated for that to happen, and if they do go undefeated, they deserve to go.

USC lost too much
I don’t see them ending as high as they start, even in a weak Pac 10. Although they reload quite easily, the experience lost on the defensive side of the ball will cause them to drop a game.
Ole Miss seems to be a trendy dark horse, and I think LSU will be vastly improved over last year. Florida’s road is not without landmines.

"Florida’s road is not without landmines."
Cannot be emphasized enough. In a year that looks as good as any for teams to go unbeaten, a tough conference schedule could be enough for one blemish to keep them out of the title game.

Particularly
since USC and the winner of TX/OU are both likely to be undefeated. Although nothing is certain, Florida certainly has the toughest task.

I don't know
Florida doesn’t play Alabama or Ole Miss in conference play, and while playing at LSU is no cakewalk, who will be their qb this year? A true freshman? One of the guys who didn’t get it done last year? Will their defense give up 50+ to every competent offense they play this year? To many questions to think LSU will be that good. I think they’ll be improved, but how much? The Georgia team Florida destroyed last year that lost it’s best players should be even more of a mismatch this year, but we’ll see. They would at least have the SEC championship game.
USC plays at Ohio State & Oregon (they haven’t won a game in Oregon in what, 4 years) which I think are both very losable, seeing as they lost 10 defensive starters and their qb. They also have Oregon State and Cal. I think they lose at least one of those.
The problem, I think, comes from the Big 10. If Ohio State beats USC, they will get a big boost and you won’t be able to shut up the voices trumpeting the return to glory of a historically great program. That sets up the very real possibility of the Ohio State – Penn State winner being an undefeated Big 10 champion. Go check out Ohio State and Penn State’s schedules. The Big 10 is definitely weaker than the Pac-10, but the only way to get to the MNC past an undefeated BCS conference champion is to be undefeated yourself. 2004 anyone?

Don't forget ND...
ND has a very easy schedule and beating USC might be possible. They will certainly lock up a BCS position this year almost without breaking a sweat since the pollsters will vote them high enough to get their automatic bid. I think the top 4 above are guaranteed a spot if any two of them go undefeated. If ND goes undefeated they might very well pass up an undefeated Penn State if three teams are undefeated, but I don’t think they get into the top 2 ahead of any of the others. That said, I wouldn’t count on more than 2 BCS conference teams being undefeated this year.

I think ND will get all kinds of hype, but no way they go undefeated in the regular season. Not that I’d complain about watching UT face them in a bowl game. Considering recent bowl accomplishments, I’d love to be a fan of ANY team facing ND.

"..beating USC might be possible"
…or ND will go 4-8.
You know…one or the other.

12-game schedule
“In a year that looks as good as any for teams to go unbeaten”
In the five previous years (02-03, 06-08) of college football’s 12-game schedule, this is the list of BCS schools that have gone unbeaten in the regular season: 02 Miami, 02 Ohio State, and 06 Ohio State. And only 02 Ohio State played 13 games prior to the bowls which is what an SEC or Big XII undefeated team would have to do with the championship game.
It’s awfully hard to win them all these days and I don’t think this year is any different. I predict another BCS sh*tstorm at the end of the year as a number of 1-loss teams battle in the polls for a title game appearance.

Perfect Storm Coming?
The way the upcoming season is looking don’t it remind you of 2005? USC two time defending champions pre ranked #1 and prior to season put on notice as best team ever. Jump to 2009, Florida coming off National Title pre ranked #1 already practically anointed the Championship and another Heisman for it’s stud QB Texas hanging around just waiting at #2!!!! Dejuvue

completely agree....
plus the BCS is due for a non-controversial match this year for the championship. Florida and Texas start at #1 and #2 and stays put all year just like in 2005.
I pray the 2009 season goes exactly like the 2005 season!!

I don't think OU is the best team in Oklahoma...
Barring any injuries, I think it is OSU’s time to shine in the OK state. They have key returning players in all the right spots. I think that if there was ever a time OSU had a chance, it would be this year w/ a returning top QB, RB, and WR. That is something that is rare no matter what school you look at.
Anyway, I still have UT beating them because of the returning talent we have, but I really think OU will take a step back this season due to the OL inexperience plus losing some really good WRs.
