Baseball Takes on Aggy

[Update:] The Horns jumped out to leads of 3-0 and 8-3 before giving both leads up. Chance Ruffin was solid and Austin Wood was both disastrous and magical, then the Horns put up a 3-spot in the 10th and Austin Dicharry finished it up for an 11-9 win. KSU lost to Tech 6-0, so Texas' magic number is now 2!

Winning two our of three this weekend may not guarantee a conference crown, but it will go a long way towards ensuring a national seed. Aggy's Friday starter is about as good as they come and Texas has had trouble getting to aces, so a Friday win could portend big things for the weekend, especially since Saturday and Sunday are in Austin. There's not a ton that needs to be said about this one: it's big for both sides, Texas' hitting has come alive again, and we'll be interested to see how Brandon Workman responds to being moved to the bullpen.

Hate fest is on!

There’s not much to say. We pitch better than they do so far. Aggies are miserable people.

This place is awful.

Anyone who reads this from their phone, just take any seat you can. They’re all “saved” obviously.

by Horn Brain on May 8, 2009 6:57 PM CDT reply actions

Top of the seventh ...

… Horns up 6-3. Good Guys just scored three on a double, still no outs in the inning. Man on second. Rowe up to bat.

Watch out, I bite.

Update - Top 7th

Horns have put up 5 runs so far in the 7th. its now 8-3. Raley is still in the game for the aggies. only 1 out in the inning with runners on 1st and second still. Lets see if Chance can get us through at least one more inning and let our bullpen close things down. Its gonna be a good weekend!

by 6th street on May 8, 2009 8:32 PM CDT reply actions

as I speak

Raley is chased after 6 1/3. in comes Wilson and ends the inning

Raley’s line for the day:

6.1 inn – 9H – 8R – 8ER – 1BB – 5K

Raised his ERA from a 1.96 to a 2.67. Id say the offense is pretty locked in right now.

by TexasGarcia36 on May 8, 2009 8:38 PM CDT reply actions

no worries.

i just got home and pulled the game tracker and audio feed up. i had this game thread pulled up on my phone while i was out and was frustrated no one had any updates!

chalk one up for the good guys though, huh?

by 6th street on May 8, 2009 8:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Uh, not there yet

As crazy as this game has been…

by 40AS on May 8, 2009 9:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Home from bar

Glad to see everything’s a-okay!

by 40AS on May 8, 2009 8:42 PM CDT reply actions

Bottom 7th

Gonzalez, the 8th hitter, pops out. Then Smith walks, followed by a homer from Greene.

still 8-5 good guys.

40AS…i think youre bad luck.

by 6th street on May 8, 2009 8:44 PM CDT reply actions

Austin Wood into the game

6.1 solid innings from Ruffin. Lets see if Austin can give us another of those 2+ inning saves.

by 6th street on May 8, 2009 8:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Ugh

Colligan homers to make it 8-7. 2 outs in the 7th.

we’re not making this easy on ourselves…

by 6th street on May 8, 2009 8:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Another two run homer

Then groundout…8-7 through 7

by 40AS on May 8, 2009 8:50 PM CDT reply actions

Jesus

Wood gives up a tying triple but the guy is thrown out trying to stretch it into a homer

8-8, to the 9th

by 40AS on May 8, 2009 9:12 PM CDT reply actions

Bullpen

You think we see Workman come in if we go to extra innings here? Seems like thered be no reason to use Wood again in the bottom of the 9th if we’re tied. Save him for Sat/Sun.

by 6th street on May 8, 2009 9:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Sure

If we get one here in the top 9th, Id expect him to close it down. But otherwise, itd seem kind of silly to throw him out there for another inning just to get us to extra innings. shrug this is a pretty big game tho.

by 6th street on May 8, 2009 9:18 PM CDT up reply actions

I bet he pitches the 9th

Although he has been anything but sharp tonight

by 40AS on May 8, 2009 9:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Tech won

Gives us some room if we slip up here

by 40AS on May 8, 2009 9:17 PM CDT reply actions

Horns go 1-2-3

Oy, be nice to return to Austin

by 40AS on May 8, 2009 9:19 PM CDT reply actions

Groundout to first

No reason this should be going extra innings…8-8 to the top 10

by 40AS on May 8, 2009 9:26 PM CDT reply actions

Walk

1st and 2nd, still no outs

by 40AS on May 8, 2009 9:36 PM CDT reply actions

Error by Wilson

bases juiced. no outs. awesome. blow em out.

by 6th street on May 8, 2009 9:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Flyout ends it

11-8, bot 10..let’s finish this!

by 40AS on May 8, 2009 9:38 PM CDT reply actions

Austin

not missing very man bats today

by 6th street on May 8, 2009 9:42 PM CDT up reply actions

hmmm

seems odd to bring him in now. AW just didnt have it tonight.

by 6th street on May 8, 2009 9:47 PM CDT up reply actions

HUGE K!

Parsons down swinging! One out to go!

by 6th street on May 8, 2009 9:53 PM CDT reply actions

With KSU losing

Texas’ lead is now 2 games, magic number is 2 (I think), 2 wins would make us 18-8-1 in conference and if KSU goes 5-0 in that span they’d be 17-8-1

by 40AS on May 8, 2009 9:59 PM CDT reply actions

Sort of

According to Craig Way, the magic # is 2 IF Texas gets another win out of this series. He said that 2 KSU losses will not cut it if Texas also loses the next 2. I really think 1 more win seals the deal, but 2 would be especially sweet, as it would be the 4th straight sweep of the Aggies.

by bassale47 on May 8, 2009 10:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed

I think if we pull one out tomorrow, they’re all but cooked. Jungmann has been untouchable lately. And neither of their weekend pitchers are as good as Raley. I just think we’re in too good of an offensive groove right now. This one was huge.

by 6th street on May 8, 2009 10:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, their other starters are not close to Raley

but Raley was off tonight, and their offense still kept them in it. We really need Cole Green to be on his game tomorrow. I have confidence in Jungmann, but Green is not a dominant pitcher. Good, but doesn’t have overwhelming stuff, and that scares me against a great offensive team like A&M.

by bassale47 on May 8, 2009 10:16 PM CDT up reply actions

aight chief

Im out for a celebratory beverage. We’ll pick this thing up again tomorrow.

no posting for me as Ill be at the Disch rooting on Cole Green and the boys to lock up a national seed.

by 6th street on May 8, 2009 10:00 PM CDT reply actions

Like clockwork ...

Aggy claims we bought off the umps. Those guys are hilarious. One of them said he “saw it” when Augie and the home plate ump shook hands before the game.

by bassale47 on May 8, 2009 10:05 PM CDT reply actions

Thanks guys

The only way I could follow this game was through your posts. Here’s to success tomorrow and Sunday. I like our chances for a national seed, but I like them better the more games we win.
So, bassale47, can we get the Aggies to compute how much Augie must have paid out over the years to get to 1700+ wins? I never read that he was born into that much wealth.

.

by Longhorn in Canada on May 8, 2009 10:30 PM CDT reply actions

Oh, and by the way

Don’t you think after 1700 wins Augie could have figured out a better way to pay off the umps than cash in a handshake? Or does Aggy not know about electronic funds transfers?

.

by Longhorn in Canada on May 8, 2009 10:32 PM CDT up reply actions

It’s amazing that they think they had a better view of that play at home from their computer screens than the umpire did standing right over the action.
