DMN:Reporting Jarvis Humphery Has Withdrawn From Classes
The Dallas Morning News is reporting that Jarvis Humphery a defensive tackle has withdrawn from classes because he is suffering from a kindney condition.Humphery was considered one of the best at his position coming out of high school. He was a red shirt freshman from Cedar Hill, Texas.
There was no statement as to what he would do in the future. The defense was counting on him to provide depth at a thin position on the team.Let' hope he can resolve this condition and return to the team in the fall.

let’s hope he can get healthy again, then we can hope he gets back to the team. some reports have him suffering from an extremely dangerous kidney condition, and i’d absolutely love for him to get better.

Whether or not it means he could return to the team, I really just hope he overcomes the kidney problems. That’s one of those organs I’d least like to have effing up.

Apology to Jarvis
I want to apologize for the knee jerk reaction where I looked at the impact on Horns football before the impact of a young Jarvis Humphrey.
I sincerely hope and pray that he gets better and lives a long and happy life. Good luck Jarvis.

no, definitely. happens. sometimes we forget these are students, and kids, and just look at it in terms of sports impact.

While good juco players can be found, the juco route can be a slippery slope. If Calvin Howell is eligible, UT’s still going to be young but very talented.

Calvin Howell
I thought he passed the the test? Did he?

Calvin Howell
He reportedly has gotten a qualifying score on his SAT. If he successfully completes the courses he is taking this semester he will be fully qualified. He apparantly did poorly grade-wise his freshman and sophomore years.

Thoughts and prayers to the Humphery family.
Get well soon, Jarvis.

So when did this happen? Students are currently near the end of finals, right?
by utexex on May 9, 2009 3:01 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
yesterday was the last class day, finals start next week.
I hope Jarvis gets better, and is able to continue his education. That sucks to have to withdraw so late in the semester.

What is wrong with his kidneys?
and did the problem exist in high school?

sad news..
I hope he can fix his problems and continue his football future. I heard he had a staph infectiomn during the bowl game. Is that true or was it the kidney problems?

AAS said he had to withdraw from classes for a medical shirt, i don’t know how those impact scholarships though.

Who was the four-star lineman UT had signed a year or two ago who ended up having to quit football? IIRC, UT announced that his scholarship would be honored for all four years, but I believe it has not counted at all against football scholarship limits.

I saw the Statesman piece
on Jarvis Humphery. The comment about “had to drop out” completely mystifies me. I’m sure it’s accurate, I just don’t understand the how’s and why’s of the NCAA and medical hardship . . . anybody have an explanation?
Seems utterly silly that a student would attend class all spring, then drop out and lose the academic effort to justify keeping his scholarship, or getting a hardship year.

in order to qualify for the medical redshirt i guess it needed to affect him enough that he couldnt’ complete his coursework, in order to save a year of eligibility he needed the medical redshirt.
also, he may have had terrible grades and it was worth it to drop out this semester.

This from a friend of mine who says the situation is serious
A couple of months ago at an exes gathering, this came up and a doctor in the group tried to explain it to us. He named the medical condition, which has been diagnosed, but I cannot recall what it’s called.
Basically, it involves a kidney or liver malfunfunction which causes the extremities to swell. He said Jarvis’ ankles look like he has elephantitis. At the time he spoke, Jarvis’ football career was already over. The struggle going on, he said, is to treat the condition, and treatment options are not plentiful. Humphrey is in a lot of trouble in terms of being able to live a normal life. This is a very, very serious situation.

Sobering
I cannot imagine going from a tremendous athlete to fighting for your life within months. I know Mack and the UT family will be an asset for him and his family. I was really impressed with how Mack interceded with Matt Nader – and would hope he would do so for Jarvis.

Thanks for the medical update
We can only pray for the young man and his family.

Scholarship
I hope Mack does the right thing and keeps the scholarship on the table, with or without football*
*I’m not sure if this is even an option, but it seems like the right thing to do.

im sure that he will
I don’t think that, as a Texas fan, I have ever been embaressed by the actions of Mack I’m sure in this instance he will do the right thing and continue to support jarvis in any way that he can.
With a football spin, it could also be noted that Jarvis went to Cedar Hill where Texas has recently developed a bit of a talent pipeline so I’m sure that he also will not want to do anything to jeopardize his relationship witht he coaches there…
