ASU-UNC Open Thread

It's Arizona State versus UNC tonight at 6 PM on ESPN2. We'll probably see a rematch of the ASU Aussie versus UNC's White with the winner needing to win three games in three days in order to advance and the loser going home. Should be fun.

May the better team win ...

in several extra innings, after depleting its pitching staff.

by NYCHorn on Jun 18, 2009 5:29 PM CDT reply actions

Agreed

Id like to see at 24 inning game, lasting until 4am, with about 1000 pitches thrown

by future_longhorn_dad on Jun 18, 2009 5:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Dittoed. I hope this game takes it out of either of them.

by burntorangehorn on Jun 18, 2009 5:56 PM CDT reply actions

I was not paying attention

who is pitching tonight?

The next up and coming Longhorns QB!

by HornsRiverine on Jun 18, 2009 6:04 PM CDT reply actions

Josh Spence for ASU, Matt Harvey for UNC

Spence pitched for ASU when they played UNC on Sunday. Didn’t get the decision, but matched Alex White pitch for pitch. Harvey is UNC’s #3 guy, not stellar numbers. So we’ll see what happens.

by bassale47 on Jun 18, 2009 6:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Who thinks if ASU

wins tonight that Leake is pitching tomorrow? That would be awesome to watch the Horns knock him out in back to back outings. Of course I was not even close to being that kind of optimist on Tuesday night.

The next up and coming Longhorns QB!

by HornsRiverine on Jun 18, 2009 6:11 PM CDT reply actions

I don't know

They’d have to beat Texas twice anyway, they might just save him for Saturday and give him an extra day of rest. Not sure what the typical strategy is in that situation.

by junglerules on Jun 18, 2009 6:19 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't think I'd mind facing Leake on 2 days rest

His arm was worn out coming into this tournament, and his confidence is shaken. Don’t know if any of you heard him in the postgame press conference Tuesday night, but he was rattled to say the least. Baseball America’s John Manuel called him out for not wanting to answer questions about his performance. All he would say was “I have a lot on my mind right now, so I can’t really think about this.”

by bassale47 on Jun 18, 2009 6:19 PM CDT up reply actions

who should we be pulling for?

im thinking NC cuz our pitching can handle Ackley. not sure though

by acho81 on Jun 18, 2009 6:31 PM CDT reply actions

I like to see NC

I would like to see Ackley more. Maybe test our pitchers little before we play LSU.
Glad Ackley is coming to Seattle. Hopefully start for Mariners next season.

by seattlehorn on Jun 18, 2009 7:34 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm pulling for Ariz. State

ASU co-eds > UNC co-eds.

No need for further explanation.

Get off your knees Greg, you're blowin' the game.

I think it tough either way

But Im not as worried about playing either team as I was at the beginning of the week

ASU commits error

runners on 2nd and 3rd. 1 out

I'm cheering for ASU

I don’t think ASU throws Leake considering everything bassale pointed out…UNC scares me more because White can go again and they’re the more potent offensive club

by 40AS on Jun 18, 2009 6:39 PM CDT reply actions

Who is ASU's 3rd starter?

Any stats on him?

Get off your knees Greg, you're blowin' the game.

by kriess on Jun 18, 2009 6:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Not sure

But I think their entire staff is downhill from Spence/Leake (although that’s not saying much)

by 40AS on Jun 18, 2009 6:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Suicide squeeze works

2 down, play at first alot closer than what I thought. UNC up 1-0

i forgive espn...

no doubt they’ve assigned some terrible play calling commentators for our game on tues… but i’m glad to see they’ve put some air time for our coach and our fans in the stadium… anyone knows who that fans is? Lucky him that he got the close up shot with his sunglasses on….

by Horns98 on Jun 18, 2009 7:32 PM CDT reply actions

ESPN?

No forgiving them. sorry. They just jabber and jabber and say very little. I am looking for the perfect CD to play n the background while I watch their excellent camera work. (as long as they keep the camera out of the booth).

by Ohio Horn on Jun 18, 2009 7:34 PM CDT reply actions

4-0

ASU imploding, they’ve given up 14 unanswered :-)

by 40AS on Jun 18, 2009 7:34 PM CDT reply actions

Im hoping they give up 2 more

and then score 10 unanswered. But only the elite teams can do that

sorry, i was kind of out of line from your thread…..let’s back to the asu game now….hehe….

by Horns98 on Jun 18, 2009 7:46 PM CDT up reply actions

ASU

Mentally, I feel like we own ASU at the moment. So I rather see ASU win. But either way, I believe Texas will beat ’em. I definitely have a new found confidence in our team, haha. Yea, last game, I stopped watching pissed after 3rd inning.

by seattlehorn on Jun 18, 2009 7:40 PM CDT reply actions

The only problem if ASU wins

Is that they will have completed an incredible comeback and have some serious momentum to ride (although not much pitching left I’d imagine). The best case for us remains extra innings

by 40AS on Jun 18, 2009 7:52 PM CDT reply actions

pardon me if

i’m too bold… but i’ve already reserved our team will play against the tigers in the final….

by Horns98 on Jun 18, 2009 8:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Leadoff walk for the yankees

Followed by flyout, pop out, flyout…3-0 Nats through 8!

by 40AS on Jun 18, 2009 8:07 PM CDT reply actions

What is this ESPN?

The CWS is on. Leave MLB for another time.

by Ohio Horn on Jun 18, 2009 8:09 PM CDT up reply actions

The Nats are winning!

They’re on pace for 44 wins in 162 tries, have to savor each chance

by 40AS on Jun 18, 2009 8:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed.

Win or not, we need ASU to have enough hits that they start putting in new pitchers

by Ohio Horn on Jun 18, 2009 8:12 PM CDT reply actions

4-4 top of 6th.

Amazing baseball. UNC pitcher looked good until that 3-2 pitch. Dang..

by seattlehorn on Jun 18, 2009 8:25 PM CDT reply actions

how many that red hair dude..

calhoun hr has when he played against us couple days ago? i know he got quite a lot of base hit that night….

by Horns98 on Jun 18, 2009 8:34 PM CDT reply actions

Another new pitcher for UNC

Now we need ASU to start putting in new pitchers. Pace yourself guys. The game is going until the 14th inning

by Ohio Horn on Jun 18, 2009 8:42 PM CDT reply actions

when did they

start that tradition to boo the ballgirl every time they won’t give the ball to the fans?

by Horns98 on Jun 18, 2009 8:45 PM CDT reply actions

Both teams getting hosed

UNC pitcher balked but picked the guy off…I guess calling him safe is a way of taking the middle ground?

by 40AS on Jun 18, 2009 8:47 PM CDT reply actions

Hmm

Hit and run with a base runner on 3rd base?

by seattlehorn on Jun 18, 2009 9:01 PM CDT reply actions

Straight steal of home

Just happened to be strike 3, he had it if it’s not strike 3

by 40AS on Jun 18, 2009 9:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Spence at 116 pitches through 6

After throwing 122 on Sunday (3 days rest)…if they drag him out for another inning that’s far worse IMO than Wood throwing 169 once

by 40AS on Jun 18, 2009 9:02 PM CDT reply actions

Alex White warming up

I’d love for him to pitch and this to go extra innings

by 40AS on Jun 18, 2009 9:13 PM CDT reply actions

Calhoun looks really good

I like his sweet swing.. Geez. 6-4 ASU

by seattlehorn on Jun 18, 2009 9:16 PM CDT reply actions

If UNC has to bring in White

then I don’t care who we have to face tomorrow because neither team will have the pitching to beat us twice. UNC has another quality starter (Adam Warren) who threw on Tuesday, but they don’t have anyone else. So he would be operating on 2 days rest, and then what?

ASU has a third starter (Seth Blair) who has pretty good numbers (7-2, 3.39 ERA, 70 runs, 30 walks, 78 Ks in 77 IP). He threw 12 pitches against us on Tuesday and gave up 2 hits and 2 earned runs. They also have Leake, but as I said before, Leake really just does not scare me right now. I know despite his performance against us, he’s still a very good pitcher and anything can happen, but he was really overworked before this tournament started, and now we are in his head.

Gonna be interesting either way.

by bassale47 on Jun 18, 2009 9:28 PM CDT reply actions

Game over

ASU only used 1 pitcher so far. Not bad at all..

by seattlehorn on Jun 18, 2009 9:34 PM CDT reply actions

Man, talk about falling apart. I only hope ASU doesn’t turn this into momentum for Friday.

by burntorangehorn on Jun 18, 2009 9:36 PM CDT reply actions

I can't imagine ASU throwing Leake tomorrow

So tomorrow is probably our best chance to close things out (duh, right?)

by 40AS on Jun 18, 2009 9:43 PM CDT reply actions

Betting they tell him to be ready for some relief innings if they really need a boost. But I’ve usually seen such attempts at heroism go very south.

by burntorangehorn on Jun 18, 2009 9:46 PM CDT up reply actions

I would guess Murphy plays it safe at first

and throws Seth Blair to start. He said at the press conference Tuesday night that Leake would be ready to go if they made it to Friday, but then yesterday he commented that Leake’s arm may be wearing down because of how much he pitched in the regular season. I think he probably wants to ride Blair as far as he can and try to give Leake another day of rest.

Either way, Texas needs to put this away tomorrow to save our pitching because I don’t hold out much hope for Arky against LSU, and I don’t think we want to have to use Green and Ruffin just to get to the final series.

by bassale47 on Jun 18, 2009 10:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Ark gets one more day of rest than ASU does, which can probably only help. I hope they take at least one. It’d be nice to have at least a day extra the opponent for the championship series.

Texas vs ASU

I’ve waving my Longhorn flag on my house (in Phoenix), got my car flag mounted and sporting a Longhorn shirt at work! Let’s beat the Sun Devils tonight!!
