Timmons, Whaley to participate in 2009 THSCA All-Star Game

The game will be held today at 7:30 at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium. Greg (21) and Chris (24) will both be playing on the South Team (Red) for Katy HS coach Gary Joseph.

The two are the only participants in the game committed to Texas. So, if you find yourself with nothing to do on a Tuesday (not hard to envision) and still need your football fix, head on down to DKR. Personally, I'm pretty stoked to see what Whaley can do in-person, despite the fact that I'll be working instead of watching.

Maybe I’m confused, but I thought Whaley was going to be playing this year? Isn’t he already on campus? If so, how can he be playing in that game? If he is on campus, I’m a little surprised the coaches (of any school) would let him play. After watching Yao Ming ramp up the games/milage with the Chinese and wreck his body this year, I’m even LESS inclined to want to see ‘my’ players participating in games that don’t count for our team that could potentialy get them injured (or at the very least cause more wear and tear, and important thing for RBs).

he should play in 09

however I dont think he attended the spring or summer semesters. If he has participated in anything I’d guess only strength and condioning so far.

As far as the game, there is some risk. Garrett Gilbert was held out at Mack’s request I think. However given the depth at each postion (RB and WR) and the fact that these allstar games are so vanilla, I wouldn’t worry too much. Knock on wood.

'Depth'

I know our blocking scheme has a lot to do with it, but I wouldn’t really tout our ‘depth’ at running back as a strenght sor of like I wouldn’t claim our ‘depth’ at TE is a strength. Just like with Irby, I kind of feel like we are one serious injury to a starter away from a bad situation at RB. So unless the mythical Fozzy-Titan decides to make an appearance, I’d rather not risk injury to a Fr RB who could potentialy get a lot of snaps.

by UT_BKC on Jul 21, 2009 12:05 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

wait what?

irby is the only standout TE we had/have. however none of the RB were standouts, not even ogbannaya who made me cringe every time he was handed the ball.

all 3 of the RB are equally capable, and therefore losing 1 isn’t going to kill our running game…

We don’t have a standout RB, but the 3 we have are not equally capable. Fozzy was hurt a lot, and in my opinion is not an every down back. McGee doesn’t seem very good at short yardage. If CJ goes down, I really don’t want McGee and Fozzy being our rotation.

shrug difference of opinion, I think any of the 3 RBs can have a break out year if they stay healthy and get the carries.

Agreed

I’ve got my money on Cody, simply because he’s got the bulk to go with the speed…like a mini-fridge shot out of a circus cannon. If he can get his weight down before camp and stay healthy (knock on wood), maybe we’ll see him turn up the speed and develop into a greater asset behind the line. Plus, at around 235 lbs, he looks a little scarier on his way to wrecking your shit. I’ll drink that Kool-Aid.

I’ve always thought Fozzy (2008: 4.4 ypc) has the best cutting ability of the three, but can’t seem to find his way past the LB’s. IMHO, he’s been the most fun to watch thus far, but he’s another that needs to turn the jets on moving past the line.

McGee (2008: 4.27 ypc) would get my pick if he could get past his own blocking. I’ve kicked myself too many times watching him run into the back of his linemen. Kid can run north/south though.

Whaley. I dunno. We’ll see what happens tonight. All I know is that GoBR’s reports have been promising thus far, and he’s got a legitimate shot at being a featured back. Hooray for indecision!

Anything can happen this fall. The End. I’ve given up trying to make a real, educated prediction what’s going to happen at RB. For as much as all of us debate it, all we have is last year’s stats and some reads from the spring game. I’m just going to wait for Mack to tell me what’s going on. Come on, media days…gimme something to ponder…

God help Colt if Fozzy, at about 185, is picking up blitzes all the time (and help Fozzy too).

I want someone at least 210 (I’d prefer 220+) if we’re lining up in the I and running the ball (or just whenever we’re in “We’re running it down your throat” mode). CJ is the only one of those 3 that fits the bill. Fozzy (and McGee) seems like a guy to try to do stuff on the edge with when you’re trying to out run people. For hard core running, I want CJ, and if he gets hurt I want Whaley.

IMO

McGee would be the most productive back if we featured the I.

As far as depth, I thought Hills looked about as good as any of the other RB’s we have on campus in his limited snaps last year.

and considering we’re a throw first team…. and we virtually never saw the I formation last year (even with a healthy CJ)…. who do you want in the backfield when we’re not in the I?

That's the $64,000 question

None of the current backs fits the all-purpose, spread-attack running back model. That is, somebody with speed AND power who can pick up the blitz and catch the ball. Thoise guys mostly play on Sundays.

Cody is power (fullback in the old days), Fozzy the change of pace, speed threat who can catch the ball. Chris O. was the third down master: some running ability, strong blocker and receiver. I’m not sure what Vondrell is: he has some running skill but seems to lack the block/catch part of it.

Whaley seems like another Cody, though maybe he’s got a burst. Don’t know enough about Hills (or Newton) to even have an opinion. To me, it doesn’t matter who starts. You mix and match, go with the hot hand, be sure a blocker is out there if the pass rush is a threat. Not a perfect situation, but if you have a franchise back that you build the offense around he gets hurt . . .

Whaley is another Cody.

The kid is huge. Not much for burst speed, I’m sad to report, but definitely a little quicker than CJ. Coach ran him as an FB in the I a lot. He had an outstanding game.

Whaley

looks like he’s going to be a red-shirt. Timmons sounds like he’ll be playing faster than Whaley.

Going back to his freshman....

…..season, I’ve seen him play 18 games. He was a man amongst boys early on. Now he just doesn’t have that acceleration in 2nd and 3rd gear that is needed to run that upright. By promising him a shot at RB, we picked up his commitment with little competition. Reality is the young man is a DE and just hasn’t been told yet. He’s a heck of a talent and we’re darn lucky to have him on the 40 Acres.

I thought Whaley looked good

But not sure about his agility at RB. I thought that he would switch to LB if not RB. What about him playing at TE?
