Break in A&M

Apparently Texas A&M had a break in in their locker room and someone left a UT message for them in the carpet. Not sure all the details or what exactly is going on. Maybe its just a way to try to pump up A&M and make them want revenge, maybe some of our fans decided to act like the sheep herders , not sure. I need only a few more words so here I go. One more word!!

I just read about this too.

Here is the link

Seems kind of juvenile….but these things have been going on for years.

The problem is that no one reads the fanshots...

Notice that every Fanpost ends up with over 10 comments and most end up with well over that, but only 1 in 10 Fanshot even gets to 5 much less 10. These two things need to be branded more clearly and the Fanshots need to show up on the first ‘page’ of the site, not something you see only when you scroll down. Perhaps the Fanshots should look more like feeds and take up less real estate, but be placed above the Fanposts, which could maintain their current appearance. There’s a block under the ‘search’ box that really seems ill used for the tools which should be placed at the bottom. Who the heck even uses those? (Or you could just reduce the size of the darn ad…oops, that is probably a verboten suggestion.)

Or

I think the left side of the main page is completely unneccessary. Put fanshots on left, and fanposts on the right, and everything else below them on the L/R side.

I know this isn’t your call, but if someone could suggest this to SB nation I think it would give importance to things that really matter in terms of the UI.

by pleaseplaykindle on Jul 22, 2009 3:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, this is what I meant...

The stuff on the right of the front page is less important and could be dropped down to allow for the Fanshots to have a more prominent place at the top. They could also be reduced down in size (like the ‘Recent Posts’, but perhaps flashier). Anyway, this probably isn’t your call as ppk has suggested…but it would help the Fanposts from getting clogged with Fanshot material.

Sorry all

I’m just a huge fan of the fanshot feature. By huge fan, I mean I can rarely piece together 75 words and have their grammars (yes I know, I meant to) correct, so fanshots work for me. I’ve found that other “fanshooters” (bad term) add some of the best content on this site. Me saying "This would have made a perfect fanshot 4 hours ago " = take 30 seconds to look in Fanshots or in BDR (I’m convinced dimecoverage is hot) before typing “I need only a few more words so here I go. One more word!!”.

I completely agree.

Fanshots are important, so put them on the top left of the main page, instead of bottom right.

Real estate in browsers has cascading importance from top to bottom.

I'm gunna pull out the naive card

What is the difference between what should be a Fanpost and what should be a Fanshot?

by future_longhorn_dad on Jul 22, 2009 2:58 PM CDT reply actions

When you have to add crap like this:
I need only a few more words so here I go. One more word!!

… then put it in a Fanshot.

by TXinDC on Jul 22, 2009 3:13 PM CDT up reply actions

I think the 75 word limit is silly...

A Fanpost could be just a rhetorical question or one-line discussion generator. Fanshots seem to be more about pointing out articles/vids/sites of interest where you don’t have anything to add, but just want to share it with the community. At least that is how they seemed to be used here. But what ends up happening is the Fanshots are ignored so people just link the articles (or to get around the word limit they cut-n-paste the whole darn thing) in a Fanpost so that it gets some eyeballs.

During football season

You will want folks to utilize the Fanshot. There were days where you would have 7-10 Fanposts a day. On the occasion someone took their time to write a well thought out post that didn’t get rec’d to the top, it would be off the front page in a single day. Besides that it was just hard to keep up with all of them.

Fan Shots

If you go here and add the Fan Shot widget to your browser, you can send over quick shots to the site when you come across a news item that would be good to share here. Might be a YouTube, a quote, a list, or a link you want to share with minimal commentary.

Fan Posts, on the other hand, have a minimum word count to encourage longer posts in which the author is doing more than just sharing a quick link.

My bad!

I have to admit I am not totally technically converted on this site. As for adding crap, and taking time away from important stuff I will not do that again. Honestly I originally wanted to comment on the 2009 Season kickoff they had this last weekend. unfortunately I couldnt figure out how to add a pic from my computer, and didnt have a lot of time to do much. I get maybe 5 minutes a pop to get on and read whats up, so I hardly have time to even post. When I realised I couldnt add a pic I had from the season kickoff (Mack Brown and myself shaking hands) I just happened to read the news item on SI. I didnt realise the difference between fanshots and posts and just looked down the posts and decided to add something.

My boy sleeps with one eye open and a foot in your ass!!

I look at FanPosts as the area where

members of the site who are not writers can contribute to the blog in their own way. FanPosts are basically saying to members, “What story would you put on the frontpage today, if you had the chance?”, and gives members the opportunities to post that story.

FanShots are basically just so you can let everyone see a quick link or video or picture you found that you think will be interesting to the community at large.

Vandilized???

I understand that they broke in and stole some equip., but writing words in tape?? Does it qualify as vandilization if it can be removed in 10 seconds or less?

That should have been the sign that there was an aggie behind it

Perhaps they should also make sure all of the toilet paper is there as well.
