College Football's mythical National Championship, even with the BCS, is essentially a popularity contest. Real champions end the season unbeaten and untied. This does not happen very often. Since 1966, when Joe Paterno became head coach at Penn State, only twenty major college programs have accomplished unbeaten-untied seasons. There have been only 38 unbeaten-untied teams during this 42 year period.
BCS teams with unbeaten, untied seasons:
Penn State, 5
Miami, Alabama, 3
Texas, USC, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Utah, Auburn, 2
Michigan, Florida State, Georgia, Tennessee, Pittsburgh, Brigham Young, Clemson, Boise State, Washington, 1
Florida has no unbeaten-untied seasons during this time!
Neither have Iowa, LSU, UCLA, Colorado, Va Tech, West Va, Boston College, or Texas A&M.
These facts are presented to argue that Joe Paterno is, without doubt, the best coach in the modern era, and Penn State has the most outstanding football program in the Nation during this period of time.
Best of Luck, Horns!
