Chiles at Reciever?
Just wondering...
Does anyone know how well Chiles did at reciever in the spring? I haven't heard much about him after he announced he was moving to reciever. Anyone have any ideas as to where he will fit in our offense at some point in the next two years?
Thanks.

as far as i know, he still hasn’t broken out to be a big time threat… however he’s shown flashes, beating some of our secondary in coverage. i don’t think he caught a pass in the spring game… he’ll either break out onto the scene this fall.. or he may redshirt if the staff doesn’t think he’ll make an impact (at least i hope he will, he’s a talent and just needs to be cultivated at WR)

Thanks
and I agree with you that he should redshirt if they dont think he will make much of an impact this year. I’m having trouble seeing him at reciever, but did I hear someone say he had the fastest 40 on the team? With that kind of speed, I would think we could utilize him on kickoff return or something.
i think we have plenty of speed at kick off returns as it is.. what i think we lack is consistent hands (earl thomas bobbling that punt return that ended up getting “picked” by.. fitzhenry?), and considering chiles has been throwing the football for the past 2 years, instead of catching it, i don’t know how steady his hands are returning punts/kicks.
rest assured the coaching staff will make the right call regarding chiles, they promised him time at QB, he got it. he’s seen the light and now the staff will do whats necessary to get him on the field in a servicable role.

Recall, the wind was brutal
during the spring game, so passing was extremely difficult. My feeling is Chiles can help this season only if there is an injury to one of the top four receivers (Ship, Malcolm, Collins, Kirkendoll) — and I’d love to see him redshirt. Drawback is that Shipley is the only senior, and even with two seasons ahead Chiles would be scrambling for playing time with the other three returning, the hoped-for evolution of players like Hales and Buckner, and other talent that will enter the program this summer and next.
i don’t think chiles needs to scramble for playing time, he just needs to get better than those other receivers. can he? absolutely. he needs to compete, he needs to get into WR shape and form, and he’ll see the playing field. i’m not worried about if he does or doesn’t beat the other starters for playing time, what it comes down to is we’ll have some great depth at WR and that can help in injury situations (see Quan at TT last year).
i think he needs the time to develop and he can compete with any receiver we field this year..

He put on weight to become a QB.
People talk about how “slow” he looked while playing QB but the kid added weight to be able to take some hits. Anyways, he’s worked hard to get back to his “speedy” weight and we should see a different type of football player out there. Reggie Bush “lite” is back! Or so I hope…

I don’t see Reggie Bush lite. Anyway, Bush comparisons are pretty played out by now, as well they should be. If Chiles were to put up numbers like Kerry Meier did last year, I’d be ecstatic. If Gilbert weren’t ready to go and Harris were to fizzle, I also wouldn’t mind seeing Chiles pull a Randle-el his senior year.

Reggie Bush lite
is what Pete Carroll called Chiles out of high school. Of course, that was quite a while ago.

May Pete Carroll’s entrails be consumed by the jaws of Beavers, Ducks, and Bears this fall.

Chiles
I’m all for John Chiles being a receiver, but as I remember last year…He had a severe case of fumbleites… Seems like every time dude went to run with the ball, and got arm wrapped, he put the ball on the ground.
I think the kid was working at a severe disadvantage. The snaps he had were not meaningful, and teams were able to key on him entirely. I think the bigger problem for him is the head start that guys like Williams, Collins, and Buckner have on him.
