Could Muck get another season?
I was reading the latest Statesman article on Muckelroy, and it reminded me that he missed enough of his RS-Fr season that he might be in the grey area for a medical redshirt for that year, and therefore be eligible to play in 2010. He played about as much as Irby did in 2008, correct? If so, it would seem likely that he could get a sixth season if he were to wish to try for it, but I'm hoping someone could clarify.
(Bonus round: if it did appear likely that he could receive an additional year if he wished, and he were to have a solid 2009, would he want to go for it, or would he rather shoot for the NFL?)

Please correct me
I know this isn’t 100% correct, but I believe these are the two important considerations with regards to medical redshirts:
• The injury or illness must occur prior to the completion of the first half of the playing season that
concludes with the NCAA championship in that sport (measured by the number of scheduled contests
or dates of competition) and result in incapacity to compete for the remainder of that playing season;
and
• The injury or illness must occur when the student-athlete has not participated in more than two
contests or dates of competition (whichever is applicable to that sport) or 20 percent (whichever
number is greater) of the institution’s scheduled or completed contests or dates of competition in his or
her sport.
Essentially, there are requirements as to the amount of participation that athlete had in the season. I’m not sure when Muck was injured or for what reasons he was held out last season, but I’m sure if he’s interested in staying, Mack & co will work to keep him another year.
Also that second point doesn't say anything about "season"
It seems to imply that the athlete can’t have participated in 20% or 2 contests in general, as in, over the course of the athlete’s career.

On a sixth year for Muckelroy . . .
He played 3 games his RS freshman year (had surgery before the fourth game of that 2006 season) and did not return until 2007. . . Irby’s injury also came in the third game of the season, and from what I understand he’s eligible for a sixth season. So, I’d presume Muck would fall into the same category: 2005 he redshirted, 2006 could become a hardship season, 2007-09 his first three years of eligibility.
Two possible problems: Muckelroy enters the ‘09 season having lettered three times, and he’s projected as the No. 10 OLB prospect for the 2010 draft by walterfootball.com
If he is the 10th OLB
and can get another year of eligibility, I would think he comes back, last year the 10th OLB went in the 6th round.
That’s what I’m thinking. He went down about the same extent into the season that Irby did, ergo he should also be eligible. With the projected losses of Kindle, Norton, and Houston after this season, and the changeover from the McCoy era to either Harris or Gilbert, it’d be nice to have a long-time performer like Muckelroy back as well. I hate to talk about 2011 already, but about eight returning starters on defense and an offense that returns everyone but McCoy, Tanner, Hall, Ulatoski, and Shipley ought to still be able to contend on a national level.
