Chris O and other NFL Longhorn Updates

Unfortunately I didn't actually get to see any of the game, but I was checking the stat lines on ESPN and was surprised to see that Chris O had 9 carries for 32 yards and 2 catches for 6.  He had the most touches of any St Louis Ram player.  Hopefully things will work out for him there.

Star-divide

Others I noticed:

Limas Sweed: 2 catches for 56 yards (I think this will be his break out year)

Chris Simms (just reporting, don't throw anything at me): 3/4 for 26 yards and 1 TD.  Orton had THREE ints.  Is Simms in danger of getting a starting job?

Cedric Benson: 8 Carries for 28 yards and 1 catch for 5, and 1 fumble, sadly

Brian Orakpo: only 2 tackles, but they don't show a lot on D during the preseason

Roy Williams: 1 catch for 12

Huff got himself a pick - I hate that he is losing his soul in the wasteland that is the Raiders' organization.  I hope he gets out of there soon and goes on to Defensive player of the year awards and pro bowls

Being in Houston, I'm anxious to see Okam play tomorrow.  I think he will provide solid depth and maybe even have a big impact this year.  A lot of people have been calling him a bust, but I'm not exactly sure why.  He was a 3rd round rookie last year.  Where people expecting him to step in and start?  The way  i look at it, if you're drafted in the first round you should be starting sometime your rookie year.  2nd rounders should have a moderate impact their rookie year, and start sometime during their 2nd or early 3rd year.  3rd rounders should get some P/T, but I think they are more about good depth and being a 'project.'  I wouldn't expect them to have much impact until the 2nd year, and probably not starting till 3rd, maybe 4th.  This of course assumes that the player is drafted in the 'correct' spot.

I'm sure I missed quite a few, especially anything dealing with the big men in the trenches.  Please add to this below if you got to see any of these games and any Longhorns stood out.

Chris O looked pretty comfortable tonight

Roy Williams only played 2 series, and the first series was a disaster for the offense (not his fault at all). The Cowboys pretty much got everyone the ball in the second series which started by getting Felix Jones the ball.

I think Cedric Benson will have a good year this year, but he has to hold onto the ball. If a player can’t hold onto the ball, it doesn’t matter how great of an athlete you are (ask J. Charles).

Sweed made a circus catch, and it seems that Pittsburgh plans on him being the #3 WR.

I hope the best for Cedric.

Glad Chris O has a chance to be a contributor for a team.

I’m not too worried about Roy not showing much during the preseaon. It will happen. He’s been there a year to get comfortable, and I think the has the talent to do just as much as TO has been doing at Dallas the past few years. Maybe more, as I think he certainly has a better work ethic (I don’t see him taking as many plays off or dropping as many).

I fully expect him to get 70-80 catches, 1200 yards, 12-13 TDs.

Roy

Roy Williams has been disappointing as a pro.He sucked with the Cowboys last year.No reason for optimism. Limas, maybe……….

Maybe you weren’t paying attention, but he was on the detroit freaking lions… He had 800 yards his ROOKIE year. And after his third year, a year in which he had 82 receptions for 1300 yards, the Lions went and drafted a WR with the overall number 1 pick. So yeah, his production dropped the next year (64 catches). When the lions realized they can’t be successful with only WRs, of course they trade they older guy.

He came into Dallas last year mid season. Anyone expecting him to jump in with a new QB, new scheme, new teammates, ect and be incredibly productive is just stupid. I’m not a Cowboys fan (anymore), but if he could get 1300 yards as the number 1 receiver in Detroit, he can get close to that with better talent in Dallas.

definitely possible and we have high expectations for him

as long as tony romo gets his shit together and play his role instead of all the celebrity crap he was pulling for past 2-3 seasons

"Stats are for losers"

Someone hasn’t been watching Roy play. He may wake up and start to take this professional football job of his seriously but, so far, he hasn’t. Things don’t go his way and he gives up, losing position battles that he should win and dropping balls that he should easily catch. Consistently inconsistent with stats that are incredibly misleading.

agree and disagree on a few things

First things first, Calvin was the #2 pick behind J. Russell. Also, I would say they not only traded away the older guy but also the less talented guy – which is no slight to Roy, but only to say that Calvin is an absolute freak.

Next, I agree witht he fact that he deserves a pass on the team success front. From wideout you are very depedent upon your team.

However, he did play a few years in the Martz system so he should have put up pretty decent numbers. Overall I’d say he’s hasn’t set the world on fire, but he also has been far from a disappointment as hunghorn suggests.

Hoping for the best out of him in Dallas.

Brad Johnson

was the QB when Roy came to Dallas. He kind of came into a bad situation. We will see this year.

Okam

Okam was a 5th rounder. Being a Texans fan, from the reports I’ve been reading is that he is great on the first play but is gassed after that so his conditioning needs to improve to be at least a 3 down tackle. I hope that he can become the starter along side Okoye and so he can replace the waste of space also known as Travis Johnson

Can't Count on First Round Talent drafted in 5th Round

Okam was better as a soph than a senior. If he had Lokey’s motor and effort with his talent he could contribute in NFL.

Simms

final line for Chris: 11/17, 142 yds, 2 TDs, 0 INT
and for Orton: 9/16, 89 yds, 0 TDs, 3 INTs

I don't get why Simms was written off after his injury

Sure, he wasn’t AMAZING but he was absolutely serviceable. The way the Bucs threw him to the curb as soon as he recovered from his surgery was pretty low, although I don’t recall reading anyone else’s complaints about that.

I hope he gets a shot at some playing time this season.

by TXinDC on Aug 15, 2009 8:45 AM CDT reply actions

I think...

the Bucs held on to Simms for an entire season in which he was injured and unable to play. They paid the guy millions to rehab an injury. I wouldn’t call letting him go under those circumstances ‘kicking him to the curb.’

by aaronlybrand on Aug 15, 2009 12:02 PM CDT up reply actions

i do..

they acted like he wasn’t the QB that led them to the playoffs, who almost won a game for them (if only that WR would’ve caught the ball in the endzone against the Redskins), and didn’t pour his heart out for them by playing w/ a BUSTED spleen, and risking his life for the game. Then, Gruden brings in a plethora of mediocre QBs who Simms, if healthy, could’ve beat, but he didn’t get the chance. I hope he gets his chance in Denver, even though I’m not a fan of the new coach.

Don't get me started on Travis Johnson...

He is the reason why they don’t serve glass bottled beers at the Miller Lite Texans Draft Party anymore. I broke one in anger after the Texans traded down two spots and passed on Derrick Johnson and took Travis Johnson instead. I got into a huge shouting match with Matt Jackson w/ 610 who thought TJ was a steal of pick. Anyway, my temperament subsided later when my buddy with the Texans, who was in the War Room when that draft happened, said the Texans thought DJ would fall to them a few picks later which is why they moved down. They had TJ listed right behind him. Anyway, TJ is a wasted pick and a leftover over from the Capers/Casserly era! Hook ’em!

Statesman had a report on Roy Miller

The Bucs D-Coordinator remarked that he will definitely be in the rotation at tackle. He has been very impressive thus far in camp.

Exactly what I was thinking.

Had to watch the houston game on Justin TV, and the one person streaming the game looked like he was doing it from a cell phone. So it was hard to make out Okam. He did have a couple of tackles and batted down a pass. That was impressive. Also saw him get pushed around to easily on a couple plays. A guy that big shouldn’t get pushed around.

by UT_BKC on Aug 15, 2009 11:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Okam played well

Had a QB pressure and ran a RB down from behind for the tackle both in first series. I wasn’t able to see much, but what I did was encouraging. Plus, with TJ hurt (and just being TJ) and DelJuan with a posible stinger, Frank will get his reps.

Henry Freakin Melton is RETURNING KICKS for the Bears

I was watching the game on the NFL Network and the D-Lineman had a 20 yard return on a kickoff. The Sun Times confirmed that Melton (wearing #69 in the NFL) was used as a return man after lobbying coaches to give him a chance.

Gotta love a guy that weighs 265, runs a 4.65, can play defensive end in the NFL, but can’t get a 4th and 1 as a running back!

I’m not sure what this says about UT’s running scheme, but I don’t think I like it.

Twinkletoes

While that whole game was an unmitigated GD (define how you like) disaster, Twinkletoes Melton’s inability to gain the crucial yard was solely due to something being wrong in his head. When you’re so big that the Geology department can track you down by triangulating your seismic readings, you don’t attempt to scamper down the length of the line of scrimmage looking for a hole to slip through. You make your own hole. Yeah, it could have been a coaching issue, but it’s hard for me to believe that coaches that had success with RBs ranging from Ricky Williams to Hodges Mitchell would mischaracterize Melton’s abilities so severely. That leaves me believing that the problem was hubris on Twinkletoes’ part. Bah, the taste of bile mixed with beer still lingers with me from that ugly day…

Opposite take from mine

Anybody willing to return kicks and play D-line can’t be adverse to contact, and considering how well he shifted to a new position it appears he can be coached. As the short yardage back, his read should have been fairly simple, but he always seemed like he didn’t know where the hole was supposed to be.

I’m guessing Giles found a way to reach him that Rucker didn’t try. Maybe he used a cattle prod or maybe just hammering home the basics.

Orakpo Impressive in Opener too...

LINK

Excerpt

The Baltimore tackle, Oniel Cousins, took an exaggerated first step. He wanted to slow Redskins rookie Brian Orakpo, make him go a little wider to reach the quarterback.

It didn’t matter.

In the second quarter of Thursday night’s preseason game vs. Baltimore, Orakpo got past him and forced the quarterback to hurry an incompletion. It was a sign of what Orakpo can give the Redskins as a pass rusher. He also drew a holding penalty on another rush and forced an incompletion later.

Henry Melton had...

3 tackles in the game.

As for the RB situation, that was a clear cut example of poor position coaching. Notice the lack of fumbles from our RBs last season.
