Where Horn's Talent Pool is Deepest

Going into the season, I jumped to the conclusion that the Horn's secondary was the deepest, most talented positon on the team.   I threw QB position out because it is pretty much Colt or bust kind of situation.  After a week or so of practice - I have changed my mind and now believe that WR is the deepest and most talented squad on the Horns.  Here is the argument:

  • When Kirk passed Brandon Collins it made me realize that a stud like Brandon is now 4th receiver.  There is not a better 4th receiver in the country.
  • The speed and athleticism that Malcolm, Kirk, and Shipley put on the field is unfair.  Having a QB like Colt makes a passing game that can only be stopped by NCAA rule changes (and they are thinking about it as we read)
  • Hales, Buckner, Monroe may provide another ridiculous talent.

As for the secondary, they are great as well.  But Deon Beasley and Blake Gideon are still in the mix for jobs - and they just don't brink that dynamic athleticism to the field like the 3rd and 4th receiver.

What rule changes?

What changes are the NCAA considering?

Sorry

Was just whining about past issues. Nothing under consideration.

What development do you interpret as Kirkendoll passing Collins?

Or Malcolm Williams, for that matter? Honestly, I don’t think I’ve seen anything that makes Williams look like the better option at this or any prior point. He’s more physically gifted, but that’s it.

Would Bet the Ranch on Kirk

This guy is fast with great hands. He is the possession capabily of Collins and a scary deep threat.

I’ll take that bet.

You're On - How Bout This Horn?

If Kirk does not get more receiving yards and catches than Collins – I will compose an ode to burntorangehorn bow down type of fanpost.

And here I thought I was getting a ranch.

Deal. If Brandon Collins has more catches than Kirkendoll through the first four games of the 2009 football season, I get ranch dressing. And an ode.

probably that earl thomas was covering collins at the open practices, making him look “bad” in comparison to what he usually is. which is an outstanding possession receiver. he’ll be starting all season long, sans injury (knock on wood).

The point stands though:

It is ridiculous that Williams/Kirkendoll/Collins are all in contention to be the FOURTH option.

Great point indeed

Looks like Kirk has the inside track though…appears Colt and coaches comfort level is with him as the new “Quan-be”.

Omission

What about kickers? Don’t we have about twenty of them?

That was my initial thought

I think we have 5, no?

I remember in 2007

We were saying that was the best depth at WR Mack Brown ever had. We had Limas Sweed, Billy Pittman, Nate Jones, Quan Cosby, and Jordan Shipley. Due to a stagnant offensive philosophy, questionable line blocking, and unfortunate circumstances like Sweed’s injury, Pittman’s suspension, and a minor injury to Shipley, we never took full advantage of that depth, although they were still the most consistent unit on our team in a rather inconsistent year. This year’s unit, despite the loss of Cosby, may have greater expectations.

Malcolm Williams has yet to have a season like Sweed’s junior year, which put him on the preseason All-American radar before his wrist injury, but Williams certainly has the talent to do so. Other than that, I have to like 2009 a bit better than 2007. Seeing how losing Sweed dramatically changed how defenses handled us (to our disadvantage), I’m hoping a rise from Williams will similarly have that affect in the opposite direction.

In terms of production, it appears that UT’s returning talent was much better going into 2007 than it is going into 2009. The following are my calculations of returning receiving production from wideouts and tight ends. In the case of calculating 2008 production returning for 2009, I subtracted Cosby, Irby, and Ullman, although I guess technically Irby is still on the team.

2008 production at WR/TE returning: 173rec. for 2132yds. and 21TD
2006 production at WR/TE returning for 2007: 187rec. for 2548yds. and 29TD

That’s a bigger difference that I would have thought. Of course, all that 2007 potential went south when Sweed hurt his wrist and Pittman went for just 77yds. receiving for the entire season. I’d be really surprised if the 2009 WR/TE corps didn’t outperform the 236rec. for 2899yds. and 20TD those returning producers put up in 2007. Heck, I expect Shipley by himself to achieve 40-45% of those numbers. Of course, I’d be quite surprised if Texas running backs were to come anywhere close to the 2016 that the returning backs going into 2007 (led by Charles’ best season).

Another thing worth noting is that in 2007 the Longhorns returned their most productive receiver (Sweed), but essentially lost him early in the season. In 2009, Texas won’t be returning a guy (Irby) who almost certainly would have boosted the 2008 numbers quite a bit. In other words, the 2008-2009 returning talent is a little handicapped, while the 2006-2007 returning talent included guys who ended up being non-factors.
