Shocking news... Lou Holtz is an idiot

Yes, the bumbling idiot strikes again.  This time, he picks Notre Dame to play in the title game against Florida.  Really?  To his defense, he doesn't suggest that Notre Dame is the #2 team in the country, just that they have the easiest schedule.  Their only true test will come against #4 USC, who, lets be honest, probably gets their ranking on name this year.

Star-divide

However, in the same interview, he said that OU (sucks) should be ranked ahead of Texas because OU's schedule is harder than Texas'.  OK, I can understand that logic, and if someone were to make that arguement with me, I'd be accepting.  After all, they'll settle it on the field.  But he uses the same logic that he dismisses Texas with to trump up ND.  It's hard enough to understand the man speak, much less understand his thought process.  Can't ESPN do better than this?

Agreed

Corso can be a little zany and wacky sometimes, but I would not put him in the same class as Lou Holtz.

if espn got rid of him things would be SO much better

Lou

Its his gimmick to be a homer and he serves as the “comic relief” for ESPN’s coverage. It’s when he is seriously trying to make a point when my eyes start rolling

I never liked his pep-talks or "dr. lou"

or whatever it’s called. They always make me uncomfortable, but i’m not sure why.

If you're so sure of what it ain't, how about telling us what it am!

He's great for ratings.

Espn always tries to get one personality per show that will annoy the poopoo out of everyone (see Skip Bayless, Jay Mariotti and Steven A Smith). I like Lou. His analogies are hilarious and his pep talks are priceless.

Meh

He’s basically saying ND has the easiest schedule in the top 25, and if they upset a reloading USC, then they’ve got a shot to play for it all.

It’s far fetched, but it’s not crazy. I think Ohio State is in the same boat, though they have a tough road game at Penn.

If the Big 12 implodes at all like it did last year, who’s got the best shot at being undefeated from any other conference?

by notsofst on Aug 23, 2009 3:39 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree with that 100%

I think ND could completely implode, but if they are as good as some people think then the schedule sets up nicely for a big run. I don’t think it’s going to happen, but it’s not crazy.

Crazy is thinking North Texas or FIU is going to be there.

I like Lou Holtz a lot for what he has accomplished. I think he’s a very grandfatherly figure who was a good model for a lot of youngsters over the years. I just think his scope is so limited that he’s not really to be taken seriously when making national evaluations, especially when Notre Dame is even close to being relevant.

by burntorangehorn on Aug 23, 2009 4:23 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Even if...

Notre Dame goes undefeated, I think a 1-loss Texas team or a 1-loss OU team will get the nod over ND. Depending on how USC does (if Notre Dame can beat them in L.A. then Ohio State shouldn’t have a problem in Colombus, and neither should Cal, or Oregon) Notre Dame should not get the nod over Texas or OU.

by prince8846 on Aug 23, 2009 4:43 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

No

If ND goes undefeated it will be in the national title game no ifs and buts about it. Its practically set in stone. For ND to just be in the BCS they have to win 9-10 games and if they go undefeated no body will jump them except maybe a one loss Florida because of the SEC hype. Also, Notre Dame plays SC in South Bend not in LA.

There was a firefight!!!!

by ThePhenomenon on Aug 23, 2009 7:38 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

This is the truth. I don’t like the special treatment ND gets, but that special treatment results in undeserved bowl berths. If undefeated, they’re going to be at or near the top of the polls, and they’ll be in the title game. Sucks, but true.

by burntorangehorn on Aug 23, 2009 8:18 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I've often dismissed the Pro-USC Media Conspiracy Theory...

…but to play “what if,” who’s in the championship game at the end of the year if your pool of undefeateds is (1) Florida, (2) the winner of Texas-OU, and (3) Notre Dame. Particularly if USC’s only loss is at South Bend…

I do disagree completely with the idea that a one-loss Texas or OU would get the nod above an undefeated ND, or any undefeated team from the SEC, Big 10, Pac 10 or ACC for that matter. An undefeated Big East team probably gets the Mountain West treatment without a very significant OOC victory.

If all 3 are undefeated, then it's up to the computers

Unless it was OU… I think ND gets in over OU just because no one will want a rematch. This is a silly scenario anyway, I think ND drops a couple games. The real question for them is a BCS game, can ND top 10 wins? Let’s say they drop one against USC and one more…

Otherwise is Weiss out of a job?

by notsofst on Aug 23, 2009 10:35 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I recognize it's silly...

…just a “what if.”

I don’t know what the over/under on wins is for Weiss to keep a job. Nine might be the magic number — isn’t ND pretty much BCS-assured with nine wins?

by Hopkins Horn on Aug 23, 2009 10:46 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not as much anymore, I don’t think, what with the guaranteed BCS game for mid-major teams with certain rankings.

The what-ifs are fun to discuss, of course, but I tend to agree that Notre Dame isn’t going to go undefeated. I think the floor is seven wins, and the ceiling is ten. Although I’d rather see them end up with a losing record, I think 8-4 with a Gator Bowl berth is about right.

by burntorangehorn on Aug 24, 2009 7:47 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think even the Big East team gets the nod...

Undefeated in a BCS conference is the holy grail. It doesn’t matter if you didn’t even play a team that even made the ‘Others getting votes’ category in the polls. I suppose it is possible that the computer numbers could be so low that it would overcome the voters, but I think an undefeated BCS school is #1 in the polls regardless of their schedule (if everyone else has 1 or more losses). ND doesn’t pass up us, OU or Florida if any of the three are undefeated at the end of the season. It just won’t happen, even if ND’s schedule ends up looking like gold.

It's an interesting issue

Let’s go back a year and substitute an undefeated, 12-0 USF for an undefeated, 12-0 Utah, and let’s just assume that the two teams looks about equal on paper. Would USF have been ranked ahead of everyone else (Texas, OU, Florida, USC) after conference championship weekend in the Harris and coaches’ poll because they were undefeated in a BCS conference, even a BCS conference perceived as being no better than, and perhaps worse than, the Mountain West?

by Hopkins Horn on Aug 24, 2009 9:58 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

They could have made it to #1...

At one point they were 5-0 and had beaten Kansas who was #13 at the time. They were already ranked #10, five spots ahead of Utah. They lost to Pittsburgh that next weekend and that was it as far as their hopes of being in the title picture, but they were positioned to get to the top had they kept winning. They were 1 spot behind USC, who was the only one-loss team ahead of them. The interesting moment would have been where they ended up after OU and Florida lost. Penn State jumped ahead at that point and would have been in the MNC if they won out. USF could have been one spot behind them at that point and if they too got past OU and Florida they would have probably finished #1 in the polls. If they didn’t make the leap then, it might have been more difficult as Tech needed that victory over us at #1 to get past one loss teams like OU, USC and Georgia, but Tech was already making up a lot more ground than USF needed.

Can't understand a thing the man says

Not sure if it’s the dentures or old people’s lips (or whatever), but all I hear is “sssssssssssss”. It’s worst when he does the pep talk cause he has to talk way too long and it’s like listening to, literally, gums slapping against each other. Other than that, I like him, he’s like the crazy Uncle who only shows up for Thanksgiving.

Lou Holtz is definitely not the best CFB talking head

But I just heard the quote on Dan Patrick on the drive over, and it’s not completely insane…

Like you said, he’s not saying ND is the 2nd best team in the country, only that they have one of the best shots based on returning talent and an easy schedule. There are always teams that come out of “relative nowhere” that end up on a championship run (for example, Alabama last year or South Florida the year before). He wasn’t saying that ND will play for the championship, but has one of the best chances. And who can blame him for having an inherent bias to a team he previously coached?

Talking heads are......

……paid to make controversial predictions and comments. Hilarious. Some still fall for it and make rants with links sending huge traffic through their sites.

Wasn’t it Darrell Royal who said that for Texas to win the National Championship, Notre Dame has to lose twice?
