J'Covan Brown Finally Cleared By NCAA ($)
After missing last season because of eligibility issues, former Port Arthur Memorial guard J'Covan Brown will finally suit up for the Longhorns this season and join a crowded backcourt rotation. A combo guard with exceptional scoring ability who is also capable of spending some time at the point guard position, all the reports from the summer pick-up games indicate that Brown will seriously contend for major minutes this season, possibly leaving a player like Justin Mason on the outside looking in. If he can control his fiery tempo and operate within Rick Barnes' system, he may be the player who can put the Longhorns over the top this season and help them return to the Final Four.

Just saw this at BC.
Tremendous news. This is the deepest Texas team ever. Incredible.

J’Covan Brown
Jai Lucas
Shawn Williams (i think thats his last name, the dude from Duncanville)
Avery Bradley
Jordan Hamilton
(Returning)
Damion James
Dexter Pittman
Justin Mason
Dogus Balbay
Varez Ward
Clint Chapman
Alexis Wangmene
Matt Hill
Gary Johnson

You are correct,
and you bring up a point that I should have addressed — the Longhorns are now one scholarship over the limit, so something is going to have to give. As discussed here before, the two most likely solutions are a transfer (possibly Varez Ward, but hopefully not) or a player like Jai Lucas becoming non-scholarship.

Brown
I think Brown should be the odd man out for the year plus he has in-state status. Ward looked really good in the tournament, so I definitely hope he sticks around.

Would much prefer
Wangmene or Lucas to pay their own way this year. We could use what Brown brings to the game.

Tough break...
Someone is going to get some bad news, and its rough for Rick Barnes too. I’m sure he doesn’t want to have to tell someone they might need to transfer or pay their way through school a year.
Other possible transfers: Matt Hill?

I would think Barnes already has a plan.
I’m sure he would first ask for “volunteers” and has probably spoken to the player or players affected in advnce. To me the two mostl ikely candidates are Lucas and Brown, as they are the two added to the team last.

I would think that he would ask Wangmene or Lucas to
pay their own way. They both come from families that are cash heavy.

Wasnt the rumor before Harrison transferred
That Jai come to UT with the understanding that he may have to pay his way for a year?
Or was that pure wishful thinking and speculation?

As far as I know,
that has always simply been speculation.

The rumor is Lucas and Brown had huge summers playing with returning Horns over the summer. Have you heard that?
If something big were to come down like a transfer, wouldn’t it have happened sooner prior to the school year which starts this week?

Transfer
I think you’re probably correct about a transfer and both did reportedly have good summers, but I think the bigger revelation was probably Brown just because it’s been so long since he’s been on the court.

I honestly didn't think it would happen
I hope he takes full advantage of this.
