Muschamp Defense year 2...

With the 2009 season rapidly approaching, there has been a lot of talk about what to expect from Coach Muschamp's defense during year two. As many die hard fans of Texas, we expect a lot no matter who the coach is or who the returning players are. During Muschamp's first year at LSU his defense was very sound, but like many teams under a new coordinator and new terminology they made their share of mistakes. However, as the past has shown us during year 2 at LSU, the defense knew the terminology and finished the season with the top defense in the country. At one point Muschamp even had a different blitz for ever state in the nation. It was also known that they ran out of states and began making up names for the new blitzes. They also held Oklahoma, who led the nation in scoring at 50 points. a game, to 14 points. in the National Championship. My point being that given the time to let his team grow into his scheme, and when he has the right caliber of athelete, Muschamp can devise a defense to attack to offset any offensive game plan. Everyone is worried about how inexperienced we are at D-line, but it seems more important that our Linebackers are returning and our Secondary is returning. This is all trivial and at the end of the day teams ultimately settle games on the field, but as a die hard longhorn fan, I'm glad we have such a genius at Defensive Coordinator. Let me know what the fans think. Hook 'Em Horns and OU Sucks!

From what I see...

You have limited data to work with, but it seems like there was marked improvement the first year Muschamp came to both LSU and Texas, specifically in scoring defense. At Auburn, they already had a great defense and he was able to sustain that for the two years he was there. The great thing that I see is that the only year that saw a decrease in efficiency was the 2004 LSU team that was ranked #1 across the board the year before. I’d be interested in seeing how many starters they lost off of that ’03 defense.

I wrote about this in last year's Eyes of Texas (2008).

I thought the second year would be the year. Might be worth taking a look at again.

03' Tigers Defense

Here are the starters for the Sugar Bowl in January of ’04 for the 2003 BCS Championship Game:

LE 84 Marcus Spears Jr.
LT 95 Kyle Williams So.
RT 93 Chad Lavalais Sr.
RE 94 Marquise Hill Jr.
SLB 27 Eric Alexander Sr.
MLB 58 Lionel Turner Jr.
WLB 46 Cameron Vaughn So.
LC 13 Corey Webster Jr.
RC 29 Travis Daniels Jr.
FS 8 Jack Hunt Sr.
SS 43 Chad White Sr.

Note: LSU must’ve started the game in a 4-4 alignment on defense as they had 4 linebackers listed as starters with the four down linemen. I put in the four db’s I think played the majority of the game back there.

Side Note...

As a side note not previously listed in my post, please everyone take a look at ESPNClassic on Monday, August 31st at 8:00PM. There will be a replay of the 03 Championship game between LSU and OU. Make note of how disruptive Muschamp’s defense can be when they’re is experience on the field combined with Muschamp’s defensive scheme.

I've got all my chips stacked on Muschamp yr. #2 ( All in? )

There’s no question Colt and Co. are going to put up points on the board, I have complete faith in that.

In order to go the distance though, we need the defense to win a couple games for us. And I mean literally, I want the defense to put more points on the board than the opposition’s offense.

If we get into that kind of shape, we’ll give anyone a heck of a game in the NC.

Year 2 Watch For Sure

Stunning! That’s what I want to hear from ESPN, FSN, & ABC announcers. We must absolutely dominate in convincing fashion!

I was just finishing a post about this coming season and the defense weighs mighty indeed. Not only to pull out the TO’s, but to so inhialate the opponents will to play. Did you see the number put on Beanie Wells in the Fiesta Bowl? It appeared to me that he just quit about the middle of the 3rd quarter. He wanted no more of our D.

Isn’t Muschamp still undefeated vs. Stoops & Florida?

NLS cranking up big time!!! I might need a place to stay this season. My wife is already looking at me funny!

If I'm not mistake Beanie had 100 yards or almost 100 yards against our defense in 2 1/2 qtrs.

I don’t think he had enough of our D, I just think somebody put one good hit on him and that’s all it takes sometimes. Ask Blake Gideon about that Kansas running back.

I think it's real hard to keep a back healthy

Especially if you’re an every down back like Beanie. Kids are just too big these days.
