Volleyball Season Opener This Weekend
#2 Texas Volleyball opens their season at Long Beach State this weekend. The Gazelles will be facing #23 Long Beach State on Saturday night and #15 San Diego on Sunday evening.
Coming off last year's disappointing national semi-finals loss to Stanford after being up 2-0, the Gazelles are shooting for nothing less than a National Championship. Having lost only Lauren Paolini, middle blocker; Jerritt Elliott simply reloaded with the #1and #5 national recruits. 6'3" Bailey Webster is the highest rated recruit in last year's class and is expected to start. Sha'Dare McNeal is a 6'1" middle blocker who is pushing veterans Jennifer Doris and Rachael Adams for playing time. Rachael Adams was expected to take over Paolini's vacated spot. Ashley Engle, Destinee Hooker and Heather Kisner are this year's seniors.
This weekend Texas begins a challenging preseason schedule with their trip to Long Beach. They are 0-3 versus Long Beach and 0-1 versus San Diego. They followup the West Coast trip with a trip to the volleyball hotbed of Honolulu, Hawaii where they will face another group of ranked teams: host Hawaii, California and St. Louis.

Tempest, nice to hear from you as the Gazelles's glorious
quest begins. My fervent hope is that their pre-season number two ranking, like that of the DKR boys, turns into a number one when it’s all said and done. I think there’s a real good shot on both counts.
I'll never forget ol' what's-his-name.

Tempest is a true Horns Fan
He’s off to LA this weekend for the season opening tournament this weekend, then off to Hawai’i next weekend to watch our Glorius Gregory Gazelles take on some even more serious competition from Cal and Hawai’i. Coach Elliot is really putting the girls through the ringer to kick off what could be a march to the national championship, but they’ve risen to the challenge by all deciding to spend the summer in Austin together for volunteer workouts – taking a page out of the football team’s playbook.
This season is our best hope so far to win it all – and maybe the last chance for a couple of years, with the graduation of two of our best players ever, Destinee and Ashley. The results of these two tourneys will give us pretty solid evidence of whether this bunch of Gazelles are up for it.
I look forward to courtside updates from Tempest.

Big XII not starting off well
Both Nebraska and K-State lost to Big 10 schools in the AVCA Showcase. In the biggest shocker, the Gazelles’ biggest rivals were swept by #16 Michigan in front of a home crowd in Omaha. KSU lost to #11 Minnesota in the other match. Hopefully the Big XII teams will even the score in the reverse matches .

Huskers pull out 5-set victory over Minnesota
… but KSU falls to Michigan in 4. Advantage: Big 10.

thanks for the info
Hope the girls can build off last year’s momentum. Weird/cool thing happened in management class last week; I saw that Lauren Paolini was in there. I thought she graduated?

She took a semester off to train with the National team, so she’s probably just back to finish off her last few hours for her degree before joining the National team again.

Can’t wait to read Tempest’s write-up on this one. Last year Texas had a habit of losing concentration after winning the first two sets and dropping the third. This year’s team seemed to start very slow last night then came roaring back to win the last three and the match.
Shaky performance to start the year, particularly when you look at the box score. The match was won on the outside, with both Destinee and Juliann topping 20 kills, but almost no support from the middles – a position vacated by Pao when she graduated. For Texas to win a national championship we’re going to need more than 4 kills apiece from Jenn and Rachael.

A tale of two halves
What a comeback. Nothing could go right for Texas in sets 1 and 2. The passing was pretty atrocious. If you don’t pass/receive the serve well you don’t get sets to the middle…that is why Jen, Rachael and Sha’Dare’s kills were anemic. When they got the set, they terminated. In sets one and two there was so much lineup shuffling I don’t think I could recount them all if I tried. The poor passing coupled with the lineup shifting to try to shore up the passing was the story of sets 1 and 2.
In Sets 3, 4 and 5 Texas finally settled on a lineup. Sha’Dare McNeal, the freshman, and Rachael Adams played middle blocker. Jen Doris moved to opposite with Yogi subbing for her in the back row. Juliann & Destinee were the outsides and Ashley ran the 5-1 offense. We dominated LBS in the 3rd and 5th sets. Played a super close 4th set with Long Beach leading late. Jerritt got what he wanted….his team finding a way to win when their backs were against the wall. Hopefully this pays dividends and hopefully we come out better tomorrow against San Diego.

Gazelles have an easy time of it with San Diego
Our girls seem to have lost the first-match jitters and played at the level I would have expected them to, totally dominating the #15 team in a sweep, 25-20, 25-16, 25-19. Texas outhit, outserved and most importantly outblocked (12.5 to 2.0) the Toreros.
Still waiting for Tempest’s courtside report, particularly to see if there was a noticeable improvement in team passing and overall chemistry. Would also be interesting to hear his take on the switch at Setter from Michelle to Ashley. That move was a bit of a surprise to me, but given the talent we have at OH and OPP this season it allows us to take advantage of Ashley’s versatility and height. Michelle will take over the position again next season so I hope she gets some meaningful minutes as the season progresses.

Easy times
Texas was never really threatened by San Diego. They never gave San Diego any hope and as such San Diego never got any confidence going. Texas utilized the same lineup that worked in sets 3, 4 and 5 on Saturday night. Ashley setting, Destinee & Juliann at outside hitter, Rachael and Sha’Dare at middle blocker, Heather at libero and Jen Doris at opposite on the front row while Sydney played backrow.
As stated in numerous articles and in my preview, Texas is loaded with talent. So in last night’s match he chose to let almost everyone play and the subs all played the opposite position. Jen and Sydney alternated front and back rows to begin. When the passing went a little south, he subbed in Amber Roberson at opposite. Then when he needed blocking he subbed in Bailey Webster at opposite, although Amber had some really good blocks too. And finally he broke out the 6-2 again and subbed in Michelle in the back row for Sydney. Freshman Cristina Arenas saw her first action of her career subbing in for Juliann on the final 3 points of the match.
Michelle had the connection of the night on her first set when she was inserted into the lineup. She & Destinee hooked up for a monster kill.
Awaiting today’s poll which could very well see Hawaii move up as high as #4. That would be a #2 vs #4 matchup on Saturday night in Honolulu. Cal and Saint Louis both lost on opening weekend. I expect Cal to drop but remain in the Top 10.

As predicted....
http://www.avca.org/divisions/division-one-women/pre-poll-8-31-09/
Hawaii moves up to #4 after their win over #9 UCLA. Cal fell to #10 after losing to unranked UC Irvine (entering the poll at #22 this week). Saint Louis moves up to #19 going 2-1 with their loss being to defending national champion Saint Louis.
It’s Cal on Thursday, Hawaii on Saturday and Saint Louis on Sunday. Saturday’s match pitting #2 vs #4 should be epic!
