Benched but not Forgotten

Concerning Texas Ex-God o' Football VY; We all know of his current situation up at Tennessee, sitting behind Kerry Collins, a man who is literally old enough to be Vince's father.   In this time of drought both real and concerning Texas football news I was wondering, what will become of our beloved rainmaker?

I would like to pose these questions to the BON community as a little summer food for thought:
1. Will VY be on the Titans roster after the 09-10 season?

2. If not, what team would be the best fit for the wonder boy?

3. Can VY have an impact this year on the field? (good or bad)

4. Can VY have an impact this year off of the field? (good or bad)

5. What is the long term prognosis for VY's NFL career? (i.e. how many years? starter again?)

To start off I'll respond to my own questions, but i do look forward to reading any remarks this post may inspire.

1. I got my money on VY leaving the titan's after this year, much like Jevan Snead, the man still has all the talent necessary, but a change of scenery might do him some good psychologically.

2. As for a different team I would love to see our boy team up with Adrian Peterson in Minnesota, as this addresses their needs at quarterback and would create a disgusting running game, the likes of which may never have been seen before.

3. & 4. I think VY will probably keep pretty quiet this year, unless injury to Collins or Trade rumors start popping up.

5.  I can't see someone with the physical tools and good moral head on his shoulders like VY falling to the wayside in the NFL, if he wants to, he can have a great career still ahead of him including becoming a starter again and maybe some super bowl heroics.

This is my first Fan Post on BON, been a long time reader so i look forward to some response, The only part of summer i hate is no Texas Football.

I think we may see Vince on the field for the Titans this year...

I don’t think the D will be quite as good as it was last year and that was the team’s biggest crutch. Collins really didn’t put up phenomenal numbers, but the team got on a streak with him at the helm and that was the end of VY’s chances of seeing the field. I think they will be mediocre early in the season and Young will have to be put back under center because they need some additional playmaking ability on the field to score a little more. I am sort of envisioning VY’s rookie year all over again, but hopefully with better numbers. I hope I am not overly optimistic.

I'm hoping to least see #10 on the field this Sunday

It may be a preseason game, but it also might give Vince a chance to show that he’s serious about competing and that he’s made progress in the off-season.

I agree with Ricky that the defense will see a hit – the loss of Haynesworth will make itself known, and the football world should realize that the only spark that the offense had last season was Chris Johnson – Collins was just a stop-gap.

I remember reading that Vince was working a lot with Norm Chow, the former OC who split for the same job at UCLA, to fit the Titan’s system better. Both Fisher and Chow are USC products, a school well-known for its pro-form offense. Obviously, Fisher’s replacement for Chow wasn’t too concerned with finding a system that found a happy compromise between the pro system that the NFL demands and a system which takes advantage of Vince’s skills.

So although I didn’t answer any of your questions numerically – I think Vince has suffered being in a system that didn’t agree with his skills that demonstrated at UT, as well as being in an organization that didn’t prioritize addressing position needs that would complement Vince’s skills. I’ve jumped on the “Titans aren’t and never were the best fit for VY” boat. Hopefully someone else picks him up at the end of the season and recognizes his potential, given the right setup.

System

Vince needs to play in a system where Vince can be Vince. That’s what Brown and Davis had to learn and it’s what the NFL has not yet figured out. But it will come. There are a lot of QBs with similar (but not equal) skills coming out of the college ranks and a team that is willing to put in the right offense will set the stage for others.

So who is desperate enough to take a chance? I’d like that to be the Oakland Raiders or Detroit Lions, because they have been down so long they’ve got nothing to lose.

Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. If they get mad, you're a mile away AND you have their shoes.

NFL Teams....

Lions or Raiders? While you may wish he end up there, it’s not going to happen with the money they’ve invested in #1 overall picks 2 of the last 3 years. I think some of the most quarterback poor teams in the league such as San Fran, Jacksonville, Carolina, and maybe even Denver would be wise to check VY’s availability via trade at some point this year. That being said, I believe the Titans have the necessary parts to succeed with a talent such as Vince, with the two headed monster of Johnson and White pounding the rock all over the field. I truly believe Vince needs an injury to Kerry Collins (not wishing this upon him, just saying) in order to get his chance in Tennessee again, but should something like that happen; I can’t see Vince giving the job back. It’s time for him to show the NFL the magic that made him Longhorn ROYAL-ty.
