Direct TV PPV for ULM game
A buddy of mine is having a party at his house Saturday night and has offered to get the UT vs. ULM game for the Horn fans that will be there. He called Direct TV today and the lady told him it was not available on Pay per view and that he could only get it by ordering ESPN Gameplan.
Anyone know if this is really the case? He is in San Antonio. Thanks in advance for the help.

Wait until Friday to order
Direct TV has it as a Game Day game, but Texassports.com has it as Fox Sports PPV. I would guess Texassports know better than Direct TV. Wait until Direct TV gets its act together before ordering.

Same issue with Time Warner in Dallas
They didn’t show anything available to order right now. I ordered the Arkansas State game a couple of years ago. It must not show up in their system until a couple of days before.

Just got mine....
Time Warner Dallas does indeed have the game, I just got off the phone with them. The lasy asked if it was the gameplan for $120 and then transfered me to someone that had a clue. 39.99, channel 960 @ 6 p.m. I ordered the Ark St. game two years ago and they started showing band coverage about an hour before the game.

Sweet
Thanks for the info. They didn’t have a clue what the hell I was talking about yesterday. I was getting worried about it.

I do have to wonder whether the Rice games in 2010 and 2011 will be the same kind of PPV. Might that already be established in contract? Rice would seem a decent enough opponent that it’d make sense to put it on real TV.

North Carolina
Trying to figure this out myself. I have the ESPN package but it sounds like I might have to grab the specific PPV if Time Warner picks it up. Hope so! Wish this stuff were announced more in advance so I don’t have to stress….

yeah, let me know too.
i’m going to be in wrightsville beach for the weekend and hoping to order it at the house.
You definitely can’t get it on ESPN gameplan, but if you figure out what channel it’s on and who to call, let us know.

Last Year Direct TV PPV
didn’t have the game info available until Friday or Saturday…it doesn’t surprise me that they are again unprepared.
Also – I am lucky enough to have Sirius/XM satelite radio…I am expecting all the games audio to be available again on channel 231.

I know this sounds kind of dumb to some people, but NOT paying the PPV fee would make PPV a less attractive option to the schools, no?
by burntorangehorn on Sep 2, 2009 9:12 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
No.
The school doesn’t really have a say in the matter. The reason it’s on PPV at all instead of on a regular network is because no regular network picked it up, but some production company decided there was enough of a demand for the game to make it worthwhile to offer it on PPV. The school might have ties with this production company, I don’t know. But the options aren’t PPV or regular TV. They’re PPV or no TV.
Therefore, if no one buys it on PPV, you’re right that it will discourage companies from offering it on PPV, but that just means it will not be on TV at all.

So you don’t think the economics of a PPV boycott would lead the team to wake up and either work to get a network pickup or, better yet, a matchup that networks would more readily pay to broadcast?

If DeLoss has his way
The game will be on LonghornsTV, and you will earn the right to pay $12.95 (or so) per month for it.
All Longhorns all the time.
by jc25 on Sep 2, 2009 2:38 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
The only problem then is the same problem with this effing PPV: it’s only available in a very small geographic area…unless LonghornsTV goes national, which would make me a happy camper.
by burntorangehorn on Sep 2, 2009 3:12 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
No.
(a) it would never do anything to begin with, and (b) if it did do anything, that would be to prevent it from being picked up on PPV in the future.
I think you overestimate how much control a school has over what channels their games are on. As for tough scheduling, we’re always going to have a sun belt-caliber team to lead off the season. Even if Texas does punch the schedule up, it’s going to be by replacing UTEP or UCF -level teams with low BCS level teams.
by billyzane on Sep 2, 2009 5:12 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
UT vs. UCF was on ESPN2, wasn’t it? I honestly can’t remember. I hate Disney, but at least it’s national.
by burntorangehorn on Sep 2, 2009 11:05 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Also, some schools, particularly heavyweights, do have some control. Remember the TBS series?
by burntorangehorn on Sep 2, 2009 11:05 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Only a few schools have independent contracts
Notre Dame on NBC and Army / Navy on CBS. All other schools have contracts via their conference affiliation. TBS was affiliated with the Big 12.
There’s a wiki page describing broadcast rights and a specific description of the Big 12’s contracts can be found here.
by gwh65 on Sep 3, 2009 10:27 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Texas, not the Big 12, had a specific contract with TBS to broadcast a certain set of games over a set period of years, am I right? That wasn’t a Big 12 contract, I don’t believe.
by burntorangehorn on Sep 4, 2009 10:39 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Is "PPV or nothing" driven by the Big XII contract?
It’s not that uncommon a practice throughout the country for teams to produce their own games, or sell/give the rights to shows games, that aren’t picked up as a result of any conference-network deal. This is more common at the non-BCS level, but it seems as though the SEC allows its schools to so, given the number of Kentucky/Tennessee/etc. home school-produced games that have shown up on GamePlan. (Though who knows if the new ESPN contract changes that.)
I’m assuming that Texas, or any other Big XII school, has no option to do so and that, if a game isn’t picked up via the ESPN and Fox contracts, it can’t be shown over-the-air at all?

According to the DirectTV reps, the game will be on channel 785. But $39.99 still hurts.
by RLKLonghorn on Sep 2, 2009 11:01 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
dumb question
Are the DirectTV channels the same across different geographies? Will it be on the same PPV channel in San Antonio that it is in, say, Dallas or Houston?
by Horncasting on Sep 2, 2009 8:25 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Dish Network PPV Channel 462
Channel 462 for those of you with Dish Network. Same $39.99 fee as Direct. Steep fee but Iam anxious to see how everyone looks this year.

So how much would you pay to watch this game on PPV?
If I reading the mood of this thread correctly, it reads as though most posters, though naturally unhappy, are prepared to pay the $39.99 to watch the game on PPV.
My question is, if you’re willing to bite the bullet at $39.99, at what cost do you say no más and throw in the towel? 49.99? 59.99? 69.99? Even higher?
I think I personally am a bit more on the fence about purchasing the game. In principle, shelling out $39.99 for an all-but-guaranteed blowout seems rather silly, especially after shelling out $129 for ESPN GamePlan, but in practice, as a DirecTV subscriber, not paying $39.99 for the game makes it that much more likely that I won’t be able to watch the Horns until the Tech game, given the Comcast-DirecTV pissing match over Versus.

It’s probably not an option for many outside Texas, but I imagine it’d be more fun to go to a sports bar that picks up the PPV tab. Spend $40 to stay at home and eat your own food? Bah.
by burntorangehorn on Sep 3, 2009 8:52 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
The problem is I spend a lot more that $40 when I watch Texas at the Bar
by Wells on Sep 3, 2009 6:06 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Right, but when you’re home, you also are paying for food on top of the PPV fee.

Food and booze at home + PPV < Bar Tab

$4.99 seems fair to me -- same as for a movie.

Time Warner - west coast
Has anyone tried to order the game via Time Warner on the West Coast? I’m in Los Angeles and I’m DYING inside because the helpful Time Warner people can’t find the game. I mean, it’s not like I’m trying to give them $40 or anything…

I know here in OKC, Cox has not carried it in the past...
so I have to find a dish and box to watch. Seems like and they state that only regional cable carriers in TX will carry the game. I guess if demand is enough they could but what is the cost to the local to carry the game. I’m just gona go to the game this year. Gas is not $4 a gallon like last year.

Other options?
Last year you couldn’t even get the PPV games on radio. Yahoo had the only web feed and wanted $ for it. The Zone coverage was blacked out.
So what’s left? Anything?

If you don't want to pay
My advice would be to wait until game time and then ask on the open thread if anyone has a link to game. Another thread mentioned justintv and a Mexican radio station that does not black out the game.
