Your Weekly Open Thread for Random Questions
The last few days, we're been getting a lot of FanPosts asking logistical questions about watching the game, listening to the game, buying tickets to the game, etc. And this is absolutely something that we want you to be able to ask on BON. We are a community of fans, after all. But because we don't want these types of FanPosts to overwhelm those like the ULM preview that kriess wrote the past few days, we're introducing an open thread for these types of questions.
So if you have a random question that doesn't really fit anywhere else, it now has a home: this thread! We'll put up a new one of these every week so you always have a forum for asking those random questions that you just have to have answered.
And by all means, keep those thoughtful FanPosts coming. If you have a well thought out take on something, we want to hear it. This isn't meant to discourage those FanPosts. We just want to minimize the clutter for everyone's enjoyment.
Thanks everyone! Hook 'em.

Wow...
If “random questions” in fanposts are such a headache, I’d be surprised if this is the aspirin.
Not a headache
It’s not about the questions being a problem, so much as finding a single place where they can be coalesced. I think you mistake the purpose here.
--PB--
Ok then, "clutter" or "a distraction"
I read the title of a fanpost and decide whether it interests me or if I can help in some way…it’s true that the one-off, game specific, logistic questions got a little crazy last week but they were pretty easily identified by their title and didn’t interfere with my ability to find the good stuff. I agree that the way the site is organized and the way we use it, there is no room for ‘one-off’ questions, and there should be; maybe this is the answer. I’m sure that reading open threads appeal to some and I’m also sure that we will soon read “why is this a fanpost/shot? Doesn’t this belong in BZ’s Weekly Open Thread?” (why am I so grumpy today?)
Thanks BZ, it’s a great idea. Sorry for the skepticism…someone needs to get more sleep.
This thread is for questions
I think you were looking for the inane complaints thread.

It's actually quite helpful
And works on other SN sites. For example, the baseball site I frequent Talking Chop constantly puts up what they call “rosterbation” threads for people to post inane things like “Jeff Francoeur for Zach Greinke! ZOMG” without cluttering up 10s of fanposts.
While I'm here
Anyone know what the good bars in the Houston area are to watch the game at? I’m used to either A) watching at home or B) watching in the SL area. I’m trying to diversify.
A group of us gathers
near or inside-the-loop for the games we don’t attend. Sometimes Lucky’s, often not. Email me and I’ll let you know each week. (heading to Austin for ULM though…)
Texadelphia on Memorial
although I think all their locations turn into Texas joints on gameday. This is just the one I go to.

PB - Are we doing a pick'em over at funofficepools.com?
Noticed we have 22 of us ready to pick. IS it a roll over from last year or have you just not set the games for the week.
We're Texas...and you're NOT
The Brownstone is the official Texas Exes bar.
Other bars that cater to Longhorns are Cortland Garage and I believe the West End.

Live online video
Are there any websites (free or ppv) where I can watch the game live? I saw texasfootball.com has it tape delayed but would prefer a live feed. thanks
Ironically enough, this was answered in one of the aforementioned random question threads
justin.tv is the go-to place among members here.
Any DirecTV info?
Received a couple emails from folks wondering about the PPV ordering process for DirecTV. I just call my customer service people at DishNetwork and order, but not sure how it works for DirecTV. Any info would be appreciated.

$39.99
I saw a DirecTV ad the other day that said the game would be on PPV. They are asking $39.99. Ouch.
Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. If they get mad, you're a mile away AND you have their shoes.
Meanwhile, in other DirecTV news . . .
. . . September has arrived and Versus is off the air, with a much nastier message from DirecTV about the situation on the screen than I ever saw from Comcast in similar situations (a la its fight with the NFL Network). So I’d say it’s not looking good for DirecTV subscribers who intend to watch the Wyoming game in 11 days.
I have to say I’m pretty disappointed with DirecTV, from the perspective of a college football fan, here in my first couple of months as a subscriber. The broadcast situation for the Horns’ first game remains ambivalent (it it a PPV game [per Texas Sports and ESPN’s website] or a GamePlan game [per DirecTV’s website]?), and the chances of viewing the second game now seem doubtful due to a rights situation which I thought only came to such an impasse with cable companies.
ULM game
I live at Cedar Creek Lake and can’t make it down to Austin, might be able to make a Dallas site by the second quarter. Is there anyone Mabank, Athens, Malakoff or towards Tyler that knows of local places to watch. Would split the $40 PPV charge with someone local, that way I can see all the game. Love to meet East Texas Longhorn fans. Any info would be great!
Posted this elsewhere
Link to P2PForum college football week 1. It’s always been gold in the past and seems to “Collie” the links. I’ll keep an eye out on some of the other sites to see if anything else pops up.

Here's a random question....
Wasn’t PB doing a “10 questions for Texas” countdown?
I saw questions 1 and 2, ( NCAA football narrative, “We are Texas” ), but then haven’t seen any others.
At one point I was ready to send someone out to his house to check to see if he was still there, but now I see him posting, so we know he’s still alive… or posting from the grave.
Just got back from a short notice business trip to DC
Writing #3 right now. Will have to sprint to make it through all ten.

Tailgate
Is there certain area around the stadium where people tailgate? I’m coming in from Chicago ( Michigan State grads) with some friends for the weekend and wanted to see what kind of a tailgate UT fans throw. This is our first time in Austin, and we got tickets to go to the game. Any bar recommendations would be great too.
Hook ’em!
Lots of tailgating areas
Biggest and best is probably northwest corner of MLK (aka 19th street) and Red River. If you’re friendly and put yourself out there a bit, any tailgate would be happy to feed you and quench your thirst.
Easiest bar to visit would be Scholz Garten, located at 17th and San Jacinto.
Traveling to Stillwater?
Hey guys, I am making my first trip to Stillwater for the game this year and trying to get a fix on where most Longhorns fans go and where they stay. I know Stillwater hotels are packed, so I was curious to know if people usually stay in Stillwater or stay 50 miles away in Oklahoma City. What bars do people usually go to to hang out before the game? is there an OKC hotel that UT stays at? does the University provide any sort of travel services?
Start here
Also keep an eye on the site, as TOA and I are making the trip this year.
You ain't hurt.
For The Eyes of Texas Preview Guide
This’ll get you headed in the right direction…you’re most like SOL as far as hotels in Stillwater go, but there are some alternatives listed below. Otherwise, all you really need to know for pre and post game is Eskimo Joes.
Texas vs. Oklahoma State • Boone Pickens Stadium • Stillwater, OK • October 31, 2009
Overview: With a generous donation from super booster T. Boone Pickens, Oklahoma State recently renovated their stadium making OSU a lot more attractive to potential big name recruits. That coupled with a new do-whatever-it-takes-to-win attitude instilled in the team by fiery Head Coach Mike Gundy has made Stillwater a much more imposing place to play. And with several key players returning for OSU this season, Cowboys players and fans alike will be chomping at the bit to avenge several heartbreaking losses to the Longhorns in recent years.
Transportation: Stillwater is located 65 miles northeast of Oklahoma City and 71 miles due west of Tulsa. It takes just over an hour to drive there from the airports in either city. Driving conditions in Oklahoma are pretty leisurely, so even fans coming in from places as far away as Dallas shouldn’t hesitate to make the drive.
Lodging: Hotel options in Stillwater are extremely limited and with the majority of fans attending the game from both schools requiring accommodations, making reservations far in advance isn’t just recommended, it’s required. If there are no vacancies, staying in Guthrie or Edmond (just north of OKC) is a good alternative.
Hampton Inn, 717 E. Hall of Fame Avenue, 405-743-1306
Fairfield Inn, 418 E. Hall of Fame Drive, 405-372-6300
Holiday Inn & Suites, 715 S. Country Club Road, 800-718-8466
Restaurants/Bars: Even people who have never been to Stillwater know of Eskimo Joe’s because of the iconic T-shirts sold there featuring a smiling Eskimo and his smiling husky. The "Jumpin’ Little Juke Joint" is a sports bar of the highest order and easily the most popular place to be in Stillwater on Saturdays in the fall. It fills up fast, so get there early and order Joe’s famous cheese fries. The pizza at Hideaway around the corner is quite good too.
As for post-game bars, there are a slew of them over on Washington Street, also known as "the strip," located just south of campus.
54b’s Picks:
Eskimo Joe’s, 501 W. Elm Avenue, 405-372-8896
Hideaway (Pizza), 230 S. Knoblock Street, 405-372-477
Shortcakes (All-Night Diner), 219 N. Main Street, 405-624-1057
Dirty Dog Tavern, 421 S. Washington Street, 405-385-0244
Murphy’s Bar, 306 S. Washington Street, 405-743-2983
Tailgating: Parking near the stadium is limited, especially for the general public, so most fans park in the adjacent neighborhoods and congregate in the makeshift beer gardens located in the parking areas of local establishments located near Eskimo Joe’s on Elm Street prior to kick-off. The best tailgating can be found in the "OSU Posse Lot," located just south of the stadium.
Tickets: Both teams will likely enter this game highly ranked with the Big XII South Division Title possibly on the line, so tickets will be very hard to come by. In the past, the OSU ticket office has been known to require purchasing an entire season package rather than sell single tickets to marquee match-ups. Securing tickets before arrival through online auction sites or even a 3rd party ticket source like Stubhub is recommended due to the high demand for this game.
Gameday Traditions: Oklahoma State has a couple of mascots, one being "Pistol Pete," whose name and likeness are modeled after Deputy US Marshal Frank Eaton, a late 1800’s gunslinger who became famous for tracking down and shooting the perpetrators who murdered his father. The other mascot is Bullet, a black horse that sprints onto the field before the game and after every OSU touchdown. Lastly, after the OSU offense makes a first down, visitors to Pickens Stadium will be hard-pressed not to notice the very audible Public Address announcer exclaiming, "And that’s another Cowboy," and prompting the crowd to scream, "First Down!"
Local Attractions: For the avid golfer, there are several public and private golf courses of note in the area including 5-Star Karsten Creek, home of the 10-tiime National Champion OSU Golf Team.

Game on Time Warner?
Anyone got info on this? Can I just order the GamePlan season package and get it or will it be blocked out?
It looks like an FSN game....
So GamePlan wouldn’t cover it. That’s for ABC and ESPN games. I can’t tell yet if TWC get the PPV option for FSN, but I’m guessing I will. ASAP.
New Orleans
Anyone know a bar in the quarter that may televise the Horns? Anyone else in town Saturday? Gracias!
by DaGoose on Sep 2, 2009 11:35 AM CDT via mobile reply actions
In the quarter?
New Orleans is in rough shape for sports bar generally, and terrible shape if you want to watch a game other than LSU. Johnny White’s may be an option in the quarter but I doubt they’ll get a PPV game. There’s also a place in the called Kabby’s down riverside on Poydras. Lots of TV’s, and probably your best bet in the quarter.
Uptown you’ve got a few more options, most near the streetcar.
Cooter Browns probably has the most screens in the city, but the bartenders don’t care at all about sports. Friar Tucks had Direct TV last I heard, but I don’t remember catching any games there. Bruno’s reliably carried Texas games and for big games tends to turn into a Texas Ex bar. The Boot (native’s don’t laugh), is actually fine afternoon sports bar with a lot of TV’s but the crowd gets young as the sun goes down.
Finn McCools is the best dive Irish Pub you can ask for in mid-city, and can be counted on to carry big games
The Texas exes were really disorganized when I lived there, so Tulane’s large Texas Ex grad/law student contingent usually worked something out at one of the aforementioned uptown bars.
proud to swim home
Check with the Texas Exes
I think they host game watching parties at bars around the country. Sign up with the chapter in your area and they probably will send you some info via email.
Thought I'd clarify
I don’t think you have to “sign up” with the Texas Exes, I meant sign up for their email list. I think it costs a decent amount of money to join the club.
What was it like to star with Robert Downey Jr. in Only You?
Of course that was back when you had black curly hair, but I thought the white linen suit looked great. Oh yeah…and Marisa Tomei was great too! Is that random enough? :)
See you guys at the game in three days! I’ll be the guy in burnt orange looking devishly handsome!Hook ’em
justin.tv
So I assume the way to see a game on justin.tv is to just go to the website, find the sports section and look for your game. Then just click and view? Please someone explain I’m a newbie at watchin game streams online.. Thankyou

yeah...
pretty much; sometimes, people are nice enough to post a feed that they found works. Be on the lookout in the open threads during the game.
I tried to register
but the Capcha screen does not recognized the test words I type.
So how does this thing work anyway? Does someone who gets the PPV need to post it to justintv?

New Endzone seating
What is the new endzone seating like? Every time I’ve been to DKR, I’ve sat on the west side upper deck. It’s a blast to ride up those elevators with all those fans screaming Texas Fight. Saturday, I’ll be bringing some first timers with me. Is it anything like the west side? What’s the view like? Are there elevators in the new endzone seating and do people actually cheer? I want to know everything about it. Thanks!
Counting down the days until October 17, 2009.
Well, the Party was cancelled..
Heading up to Lucky’s in Houston at around 3pm. Anyone else heading up there?
Get off your knees Greg, you're blowin' the game.
Anyone else having a hard time getting stuff done this week? I’m so freaking excited, I can focus on anything! Hook ’em.

Replay Info
Just in case the justin.tv thing doesn’t work out and I don’t get to see the game, does anyone have any info on FSN replaying the game later in the week?
I was wondering the same thing so your question reminded me to look it up
The first one will be Tuesday (9/8) at 11am on FSSW. Not sure about the other times, I didn’t feel like scrolling through the rest of the week.

I was wondering if they scan student IDs at games for LASp tickets
I have an extra student ticket to the game against Louisiana Monroe and I wanted to give it to a non LASP student. Do they scan student IDs at the door to make sure that the students using LASP tickets actually have the LASP, or do they only make you show your ID without scanning it?
Thanks in advance, guys and keep up the good work! Can’t wait for the season!
no...
…they just need a student ID, doesn’t even need to be current (eg. recent alumni can use their ID)
The new "Huddle Shuddles"
Thanks for outsourcing this one. What a disaster this turned out to be. Arrived to the intramural fields in PLENTY of time. The line was over 100 yards long to get on one of the 5 “fancy” greyhound buses that were working. Almost missed kick off.
The trip back was even worst!!! One bus broke down and it took hours to get back to my car. Missed part of the LSU Washington game.
All of this convenience for the lovely cost of $48.00 for 4 of us. About the same cost as a taxi from my front door to DKR and back.
NEVER AGAIN. Just when Cap Metro finally gets something right. I refuse to support this crap.
Does anyone know if the regular UT student shuttles run on game day? I am thinking this could be the way to go. Otherwise, Hello Austin Cab Company.
"Football is an incredible game. Sometimes it's so incredible, it's unbelievable."
Tom Landry
no, not on gameday/Saturday
..but the regular Cap Metro buses work w/ some detours. Depends on where you’re coming from. Try the website, and the bus drivers are helpful when asking about the detours
Need help with pics for the MAN-CAVE
I’m revamping the ol’ man-cave. I have a 10’ tall wall that needs an 8’ tall picture of the UT cheerleaders (or cheerleader) on it. Just one more item that will keep the wife out!!! To keep the Football theme, I need football chearleaders.
As most of the images found on the internet dont have the quality needed to expand a picture that large, I am looking for a magazine cover or a poster that I can scan & blowup…. or a high quality digital copy
I will buy it if you can dirrect me to one for purchase… A link to a poster website or a magazine.
Thanks for the help
