Mack has heart-to-heart talk with Colt

I heard on 1530 AM this morning from Chip Brown that Mack said he had a long talk with Colt on Sunday about his play through the first 2 games.  Basically Mack wants Colt to settle down and start having fun again.  It's good to know that Mack realizes that his most valuable player has been pressing through the first 2 games.  Also Colt indicated he wanted to run much more as he feels it gets him into the flow of the game more, and Mack acknowledged from here on out that Colt will be doing just that.  I'm all for it.......whatever gets Colt to be like he was last year.  Not to say that his play has been awful, but I think we all realize he's been trying to do to much.  Chip further said it seemed like Colt had a huge weight lifted off his shoulders when he talked to him on Monday, and was much more relaxed like he was last year.  So, run Colt run..........and have fun!

I seem to remember

Mack telling this to another QB that played for Texas. Not too sure if it worked out for him though. ;)

Get off your knees Greg, you're blowin' the game.

I feel much better about Colt running

after seeing Gilbert’s play in two games. Could Gilbert lead us to the MNC if Colt goes down? No. But the team would be solid and much better off than it would be under a Chiles-led offense.

I meant that we’d be better off this season, with Gilbert as the backup, than we would have been last season, with Chiles.

That was my comment during the last game.

Colt can run all he wants now without Longhorn nation collectively holding their breath with man-child Gilbert backing up. Of course you want everybody to stay healthy, but we’re plenty deep at QB for Colt to get his rushing yards in this year.

I Hope

to see a brutal stiffarm on whatever hapless CB Tech throws out there

Colt's running is what sets this team apart

from every other spread offense in the country EXCEPT Florida. Colt ran a couple of option plays and one zone read in the second half, and that threat made the LB’s hesitate and opened up the Wyoming zone for passes to Kirkendoll and Buckner. When teams play a lot of 3-deep zone like Wyoming did, Colt HAS to run, because that’s what the defense is giving you. As fans we tend to focus on the incredible completion percentage and whine about the running backs, but we, and apparently the coaches, forget that the whole offense is built around the threat of a run by the QB.

Terrific news!

like a lot of Horn fans, I have felt McCoy wasn’t himself – looked uptight and out of his game. i hope this restores that aggressive edge the offense has lacked at times. as colt goes, so do the horns. i am PSYCHED about saturday.

The best way to get rid of the jitters in a game

Is to take a hit.

Not saying I want Colt to get hit, but running, and getting hit can release some of your adrenaline and settle you down a lot more then sitting in a pocket, or throwing away balls on the run will.

I also agree that Colt’s running helps set us apart. As long as its not forced, I’m all for it. He can slide every once in a while too and I wouldn’t be that upset =D

look out tech

love colt on the run…seems like the downfield blocking by the WR’s is good at times and nonexistent at others…would also like to see buckner run those slot routes down the middle of the field that got David Thomas so many TD’s

Thanks for the great report!

You know, I noticed that as well. Colt seemed to be scowling a lot during the Wyoming game. He almost looked annoyed to be out there at times.

It is great to hear that this was brought out in the open and Colt can start being Colt again!

No, I think he was just dumbfounded...

…by the fact that his balls kept going over his receiver’s heads because of the altitude. Colt is used to perfect throws and I think it took him a while to get used to the way the ball carries. He looked more “Huh?” to me, not confused or stupid, but more like, “Wait, what? How did that ball get up there?”

In-VINCE-able.

Colt Has to Run

Keeping him in the pocket and telling him he shouldn’t run for fear of him getting hurt is ridiculous. In football you can get hurt just standing around. As long as you’re on the field, there is a chance you’ll get hurt, doing whatever. So they should let Colt run. it brings dimensions to his game, and in the end, makes him a better pro prospect.

In-VINCE-able.

He has to keep those instincts sharp or else he will end up like Bradford...

I think trying to keep Colt in the pocket will just end up with him suffering a Bradford-type hit. If Colt is actively looking for running lanes after his progressions he will not only look to release his passes sooner, he will also be preparing himself for potential contact.

Sergio is fine.

He will get his and put some monster hits on the Wyoming quarterback early in the game on Saturday. I guarantee every coach is telling their qb to get rid of the ball before Sergio gets there. So far they are doing a good job of it.

colt has heisman-type game

colt will show up and show the nation why he should have won the heisman last
year. i will settle for this year.
tt is in for a spanking in front of 105,000 at night and on abc, our great friends
who helped move this game to now.
JJ will have goose-bumps all night if that is possible for the number 1 recruit
in the nation.
colt 31-37 4 tds passing 1 rushing 0 int.

no way Tech scores 24

Our D hasn’t given up a real offensive TD yet this year. They won’t give up three to the sand ags in austin lead by a qb starting his third game. By the end of this unholy beatdown we will actually feel sorry for TT if thats possible.

The first TD against LaMonroe

was a real offensive TD. A real long real offensive TD.

Thanks for the update.

I really do think Colt needs to loosen up a little bit and have some fun, the expectations do seem to be weighing on him right now. Call Vince up and ask him for a suggestion.

My second comment is that I’m not worried about Colt getting hurt running the ball as I am him getting hit in the pocket when the offensive line misses another blitzer. Remember the sandwich against Tech last year where he had to have that piece of skin pulled out from his mouth? That was probably the biggest hit he took, as well as delivering passes against Baylor and A&M when delayed blitzers hit him. I don’t recall any monster shots in the running game. I’m looking for him to run quite a bit more against Tech and I think running a couple more draw plays and some actual zone read would really help the running game.

I hope Colt is able to open up.

We as fans need not put so much pressure on him. Everyone is putting pressure on him. If the horns don’t win it all this year; it isn’t the end of the world.
