A New Reality For Longhorn Fans

Style points are out - and "just win" baby is in!  Anyone remotely disappointed in the Tech win has some soul searching to do.  First of all, the events of the young season have eliminated the more ridiculous scenarios of the BCS BS.  3 way tie - we go to Big XII championship.  3 undefeateds - we go to MNC.  Secondly, while I find Leach a repugnant character, he is a tremendously innovative offensive coach, while we have a very solid "me too" offensive leader.  Fortunately, Muschamp is pretty damn innovative as well, and matches wits with Leach better than anyone that has graced the 40 acres.

Is Colt Colt? No.  The running game MNC worthy? No.  Is the OL dominant?  No.  But that defense is mobile, agile, and hostile.  It is championship caliber and likely to continue to get better.   As the season goes on, it could very well be possible where Mack makes the offense become more conservative and rely on his team to deliver the goods.  As long as we have more points - I could care less.

I know nowadays everyone wants to "crush" the opposition

but I still prefer a good game. let’s watch a battle. overcome adversity. use strategy and field skills. I dont’ see the benefit of 70-3 thrashings. other than ego building. Ultimately those egos will come crashing down (USC is the latest example, but the list is endless and includes some many Texas squads). I know the end goal is a National Championship, and it’s partly dependent on voters, so the prevailing theory is that we need to “prove” our position by demolishing whoever’s in our path. But I still enjoy a win much more when there was something to overcome, not just show up and create a list of highlight reel footage.

The other reality is that...

had the score been 41-31, it would probably have been more expected by UT fans as everyone knows Tech likes to sling the ball & our defense has been bad against the pass the past few years! After the dust settled, our defense played above-board and held a high-flying offense off when it counted and our offense played just below with Colt only getting one TD. Had he added a TD by running or throwing, all would have been ok in the hearts and souls of Longhorn faithful. As it stands, I will take a defense that pops teams in the mouth when called upon & an offense that trending conservative and uses field position for boths sides of the ball. I will say that I am a bit dissappointed that Texas is doing some thunder & lightening with Johnson and new flava of the month Newton as some ground & pound is needed to stretch out offensive drives especially against better teams. However, the defense has been dormant the last two years so I am excited that this defense will be a fine-tuned machine by season’s end as if we are lucky enough to make it all the way to the Rose Bowl, we will need it!

I think this “just win” attitude is compensation for the realization that this team isn’t as good as we thought it was. “just win” will turn into “should’ve seen it coming” eventually. This is college football, the best teams shouldn’t have to gut out wins like this.

I Disagree

Parity has come to college football, just like it came to college basketball some years ago. The best teams do have to gut out wins like that because the previously-second tier teams are now one good Saturday away from beating the best of the best (exhibit #1: Last year’s doormat Washington beats USC because USC just didn’t have the manpower to gut it out). Tech is no slouch and there should be no disappointment at this win.

If you’re going to predict a disappointing end to the season at this point, vaya con dios and don’t let the door hit you on the way out. The rest of us fans are going to support the team, trust that the coaches and players get it together to beat down OU and A&M, and hope for the best.

Tech may not be top-10

but theyre definitely a top 30 program.. face it, leach will beat ya, sure he doesnt have alotta class and we could insult him all day but he does do a good job with their program.. times have changed, baylor looks decent, aTm has done some good things, meanwhile OU is staring down 4 or 5 losses.. Tebow will struggle and might get beat in the SEC atleast once, USC was embarassed, OUR DEFENSE SHINED WHEN IT MATTERED, KINDLE IGNITED MY FIRST TRUE MAN CRUSH, WITH A RUNNING GAME COLT WILL BE FINE, THIS TEAM WILL BE BETTER THAN VY’S BY JANUARY

look up -- get up -- dont ever give up

Disagree on 2 points

1.) OU will not have 4-5 losses. Their Defense is lights out, and Miami will have their hands full next week. Of course OU is an anommally without Bradford, but when he comes back, I expect them to be decent and they will enjoy playing USC in the Holiday Bowl.

2.) It is far too early to think this team to be better than the 2005 squad, and from what we’ve all seen so far, they’re not. We have a chance to be as good as last year, which was damn good, but we’re not as good as 2005.

Get off your knees Greg, you're blowin' the game.

I Have to Agree on 2 kriess...

This team doesn’t have near the swagger the ‘05 team had. Not yet anyway. If the O can get things going in the first half we would be averaging nearly 60 pts per game, but as it is right now we’re not close to the ’05 team.

The beauty is it doesn’t appear to me that we need the ‘05 team to get the title in ’09. This team just needs to play to it’s capability and I think we’re there.

“Just win, baby!” was what Al Davis said when the Faiders were the disgusting, unscrupulous team that didn’t care about off-field problems or anything. I’d rather not associate the Longhorns with a phrase with that kind of connotation.

Anyway, it’s fine to win for now. Work to improve as much as possible each week, and hope that you improve at a faster rate than the other teams do. Make in-game adjustments. Do all that, and the chances of going to the BCSCG are actually pretty good.

How is it a "Just win" mentaligy?

The defense looks good. Don’t hand me what Tech did against Texas this past weekend because there are only a few teams that are any good that spread it out like they do in the passing game. The defense is the best I have seen in terms of total package vs. the past few years. I am not making excuses for the offense. I am just saying we might not have to score as many points in the past because our defense is going to keep the opposing side in check. Colt struggles against UTEP and Colorado & then I might be worried. Until then, I think the expectations of the fans of UT scoring 50 points a game is worse than the just win mentality supposedly being exhibited…

Why against UTEP and Colorado?

Struggling through the first three isn’t cause for alarm, but two more is? If you don’t think an O-line can cost you a game, look at OU. And I guess I’m the only one who isn’t pleased with giving up 420 passing yards because of repeated broken coverage.

If you're so sure of what it ain't, how about telling us what it am!

Thanks, Captain Bringdown.

I’ve read nothing but bringdown from you. For God’s sake, go play Monopoly or something if you’re so disgruntled with our team and stop bringing everyone down with your nitpicking. Christ to listen to you talk you’d think WE LOST THE DAMN GAME. New flash, genius; WE DIDN’T LOSE THE GAME. I’ve never heard so many negativity from a “fan” in my life. Get on board or get the hell out, man.

In-VINCE-able.

I'm just shocked by how disappointing the play has been

With how much we have coming back and the expectations for this team, the inefficiency has been mindboggling to me. I finally got around to watching the second half of the game (I couldn’t on game night because I was so disappointed with how the first half went) and they did play more like the team I expect them to be after halftime. I just couldn’t believe that after what Tech did last year and the fact that we were at home we were playing so bad. I guess I can lean on the “Colt had the flu” crutch for now, but the fact is there are 3 or 4 teams on our schedule who have looked like better teams than we do, and so my expectations have wavered.

I’m praying Colt starts playing like he should be able to, and that our O-Line can get back to last year’s form (with all the returning starters, who would have thought they would regress this much?), and that our secondary starts playing disciplined football, but I’m passionate about the team, and I’m going to complain when we don’t play well. And if you look elsewhere I don’t always have this tone; my posts above were more reactionary than anything. I apologize for forcing somebody to use caps lock, I don’t wish that on anybody.

If you're so sure of what it ain't, how about telling us what it am!

The talent, experience, and system is in place

We’re not executing on a high level on offense. But hell, our D and special teams look great, who would have thought after last year that our offense would be sputtering?

IF they get it together, look the hell out because we’ll be scary good.
