Quick Poll - Biggest Surprises This Year?

Much has gone rigt and much has gone wrong this year.  Here is the nomination for the biggest bright spot or surprise in the 2009 Season

1.  The electric DJ Monroe has charged up  the return game and made contributions as a RB.

2.  Tre Newton spices up the running game - coming from nowhere.

3.  John Chiles can play football.  Actually catches and then adds some deceptiveness to the old Q package revival.

4.  Acho boys - they good.

3rd game

There hasn’t been enough games for a surprise.

It has to be Monroe so far.

I don’t recall ever hearing anything about him in the off-season that was remotely good. “He can’t catch, so we’ve moved him to RB”…. After that, I wasn’t expecting anything from him, especially since we already had 3-4 RBs just waiting there for their opportunity already.

Color me surprised when he returned that kickoff on his first collegiate touch. The return game this year has been fantastic (punts and kickoffs).

As for the biggest surprise this year, we’ll have to wait and see what the coaches and players have in store for us.

i have to go with newton, the man was 4th? maybe? on the depth chart. we hear an entire off season of mcgee, johnson, and fozzy and all of a sudden out of no where newton looks to be the perfect fit for our offense.

monroe has been nice, speedy lil back, but with the return men we already have, and the consistency we can play newton (passing downs as well as running, whereas monroe is going to get pancaked on passing downs if he pass blocks), he’s got to be the best surprise who is also the most expendible.

Newton

And the best is yet to come.

by orangetower on Sep 21, 2009 6:05 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Newton is my pick. I didn’t expect him to get much except the 3rd-down back responsibilities, if that. And the fact that he won those responsibilities over Monroe, and many of the other responsibilities over the rest of the fellas, speaks well for his performance. It’s obvious the coaches trust his blocking, too, so he’s doing the right things, and doing them well.

I almost voted for Dos Achos, but I think most expected them to be nice players, so their great performances so far are better than expected, but not by as much as Newton’s. He was supposed to be almost invisible.

I can't beleive more people arent going with a WR

The biggest question for this offense was replacing Quan. And while Tre has been great so far, its not like hes done light years of difference from what we expected out of the Fozzy/McGee/Johnson Cerberus.

Chiles and Buckner stepping up and being worthwhile starters on the other hand, huge.

The Acho boys were a close second for me behind Chiles/Buckner, but Sacho looked like he had good things in store last year as well.

did you think newton would step on the field this season? you’re probably lying if you thought yes.

by Displaced Longhorn on Sep 21, 2009 9:11 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I guess in that regard that would be a big surprise

But its not like hes putting up numbers that I would have been surprised to see from our RB crew.

OL

not looking as promised as of yet, but we’ll see. OU is looking tougher and tougher right now.

Buckner

With Collins out and the multiple injuries to our TE’s, Buckner’s emergence is easily the “most important”. Doubling as another security blanket for Colt and as a solid threat over the middle who can take advantage of mismatches is huge for the offense. Getting a decent RB is nice, but we didn’t really need it last year, and neither Newton or DJ are showing the type of playmaking ability that calls for taking the ball out of Colt’s hands any more than they should.

If you're so sure of what it ain't, how about telling us what it am!

Tough Call

Buckner has definitely found his way on to Colts radar and that is huge, but Newton takes our running game to another level. Safeties never really had to worry much before because our backs weren’t getting to the third level often enough to draw safeties up. What Newton brings is that burst and slash ability to get past the 2nd level quickly demanding respect from the safeties. This opens up the middle for Buckner and allows for the deep ball. Tech kept safeties back and it cost them a 19 yard TD run with near breakaway’s on 3 different occasions.

Again close call, but I think Newton is the legitimate surprise.

I seem to be less impressed with Newton that others

He seems to be fitting in better, and he should definitely be the starter, but the problems with the run game start with the OL, and I don’t think Newton can make up for their deficiencies all by himself. His YPC in the Tech game (think about how bad their DL is) was only 4.4, and take away the 19 yard TD run and it drops under 4.0. Nothing new there.

If you're so sure of what it ain't, how about telling us what it am!

by circa1015 on Sep 22, 2009 1:59 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m always puzzled as to why people analyze by taking away the longest run, as if the bases for comparison don’t always include the longest runs for their respective players. It’s not an apples-to-apples argument at all when that is the practice.

Also, considering the OL issues, even a 4.0 would be pretty decent; the factual average of 4.4ypc is actually solid.

by burntorangehorn on Sep 22, 2009 6:41 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

What?
was only 4.4, and take away the 19 yard TD run and it drops under 4.0. Nothing new there

Take away the TD run? That’s almost not worth responding to , but I can’t help myself. Newton was 3rd or 4th on the depth chart coming out of fall camp. He now starts and has a 5.6 yd avg which leads all backs. That’s unless you want to take away all his TD runs…Let’s use that same logic and take away all of Colts TD passes, or Shipleys TD returns on special teams. My heavens circa, who the heck would you put in the game then? Big Bertha?

Can you hear yourself?

I don’t think Newton can make up for their deficiencies all by himself.

If Newton can’t improve our situation at RB, is there someone better? Is Buckner going to make up for the O-line deficiencies all by himself? Nope, that won’t work because you can’t count his TD’s. Maybe Fozz would because his point total is lower this year so his net average might be better because you won’t be taking away the negligible point of scoring.

by orangetower on Sep 22, 2009 3:19 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Relax bud

Just because he has a different viewpoint doesn’t mean you have to attack his. He only stated that Newton isn’t the answer to our troubles. Our O-Line needs work, and we can all agree to that. He also stated that Newton deserves to the starter.

I think our offensive struggles have really made us fans on edge and quick to blame one thing or another. We’re especially prone to attacking our own guys lately on these threads which does no good. Same team bud. I think both of ya’ll comments are correct. He was taking away Newton’s long TD run because it padded his stats away from the average ypc. He’s not trying to discredit the guy. He’s only looking at it from a statistical standpoint.

Get off your knees Greg, you're blowin' the game.

You're Right kriess...I floated that one a bit...I've got the flu...seriously

Didn’t mean to go off like that and I should have trusted my first instinct. No disrespect intended.

We’re 3-0 and 1-0 in conference while still remaining #2 in the nation. There’s enough to be happy about for sure.

Broadly, there are two schools of thought on the struggles of the Texas running game

1. “The school of the five star running back” which holds that if UT had only recruited [insert recruit’s name here] the run game would return to Ricky Williams, or at least Cedric Benson level. On some boards (not so much BON) folks are always calling for some running back who has had a good game but is not currently starting to save the running game.

2. “”http://barkingcarnival.com/2008/11/16/our-running-game/" >The school of the systemic problem", of which Circa is evidently a part (as am I) which believes that four per carry yards or above should be attainable with the talent on the roster in any given year with a more cogent OL scheme, better designed plays (my kingdom for a counter step) and commitment to said running game.

I'm not trying to rag on the kid

I’m very pumped about him emerging as the top back. I grew up less than a mile from Southlake HS and have been a fan of Newtons for a long time. My only point is that we need to tread lightly with the sudden ‘we have a running back!’ mentality. It is the skeptic in me I guess.

And I don’t feel sorry for taking away the TD run in looking at his overall performance. To look at it another way, if a running back had 15 carries for 100 yards, but had an 80 yard TD run, was that a good day for that back? Obviously not, because if you remove the anomaly then it becomes 14 carries for 20 yards. This is clearly an exaggeration of Newton’s performance, but I think my point is clear: removing the anomaly (a 19 yard run), and the performance becomes pedestrian. The plus side is that with Newton I believe we can count on a few of these anomalies a game, but I would rather have a back that will consistently get 4-5 yards, than a back who normally gets ~3 but occasionally busts a big one. Also, the TD run was from under center, and I’m not sure I’ve seen us call a passing play from under center yet this year, so a well coached defense would have probably stuffed that play.

If you're so sure of what it ain't, how about telling us what it am!

by circa1015 on Sep 23, 2009 12:09 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

But no running back does that

there is no running back that just gets 5 yards a play every down. So if you are trying to use yards per carry as a measuring stick, you cant just trow out random plays that don’t suit you hypothesis. Now if you had some kind of standard deviation for different running backs, then we can talk.

by Wells on Sep 23, 2009 9:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Achos

This has to be the Achos. If we do anything special this year it will be because of our defense. The biggest question on the team before the season was the D-line. S. Acho has played a huge role in answering that question. The LB position is thin, and E. Acho’s play solidifies that. Their combined contributions are huge, taking us from an average defense to a nasty, shutdown D.

Monroe, Newton, Chiles, and Buckner’s contributions are nice too, but we have plenty of options on offense if you take away any one of them. Not so on D.

by Texastough on Sep 22, 2009 3:36 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

surprise

And the reason they are the biggest surprise is both that nobody expected all that much from them, and they have contributed a ton so far. Nobody expected much of DJ or Tre either, but I would argue they have not contributed as much as the Achos. And we knew Chiles and Buckner were good already.
