Jared Norton out for year
Middle linebacker Jared Norton, who was injured in the season-opening win over Louisiana-Monroe, will undergo surgery on his knee and is out for the season, Mack Brown said Monday.
Roddrick Muckelroy has been starting in the middle the past two games. He’s leading the Longhorns in total tackles (23) and also has four tackles for loss, one sack, two pass breakups and four quarterback pressures.
He was Texas’ defensive player of the game against Texas Tech, Brown said.
Norton, a senior, will apply to the NCAA for a medical hardship, which would allow him to return next season. Players are allowed to play in as many as three of the first five games and still be eligible for medical hardships.
“Most of the time, the NCAA approves that. But it has to be approved by the NCAA,” Brown said.

Bad news for this year's depth
But good news for next year when Muckelroy and Kindle depart. At very worst, Norton can provide depth and leadership. At best, he may finally live up to our enormous-sized expectations and plug what looks like a gaping hole in the middle of our D next year.
If Muck doesn’t like his draft prospects this January/February, he could certainly apply for a medical redshirt as well.
Here’s a fanpost I put up about it not too long ago. Obviously it’s not definite either way, but I think the chances are good that he’d get a sixth year if he applied.

Damn
I was probably higher on Norton than most. Hate to see any player lose a year though, I wish him well and a healthy recovery.
