USC is Always 'The Better Team'
Way back when, I thought Matt Leinart was just a spoiled prick when he proclaimed that "the better team lost" after 41-38 proved that incorrect. But I just noticed Joe McKnight's quote after the recent USC loss to Washington: "Washington wasn’t the better team. They just outplayed us."
This is what makes Pete Carroll's teams tick. He's got them so brainwashed that they can't even accept the reality that losing demonstrates that the other team is better in almost every situation. I guess it's a motivational technique, but at the same time I have to wonder if Pete isn't just too caught up in his own hoopla.
Oh well, at least McKnight followed up with, "But hard work beats athleticism any day." Maybe he'll be ok...

USC is always the better team...
What a joke – the irony! You mention Matt’s comment, yet you claim the biggest head case in the NFL, Vince Young can’t handle not winning the Heisman, much less play a man’s game without folding emotionally. Joe spoke the truth, we will see where the team ends up in January.

I think he handled not winning the Heisman quite well.
If you recall, he went out the first game after that and destroyed the USC defense and won a national championship. Seems like he got over it smashingly.
Regardless, Vince has absolutely nothing to do with this comment. Don’t know why you even brought him up. And you seriously just signed up for an account here to say that? It’s like if a few of us were discussing 2 brothers and we said, “Yeah, they both have the same personality disorder; maybe it runs in the family….” And then you bust through the door and say, “Oh yeah? Well this one person in your family has ugly shoes!” Um, okay….might be partly true, I guess; depends on your perspective. But it has absolutely nothing to do with what we’re talking about, so maybe you shouldn’t have a self-satisfied smile on your face.

Distroyed the worse defense in the Pete Carroll era....
decimated by injury, with most of the starters sidelined – Cush with a dislocated shoulder, and a true freshman, and the Ting brothers who went on to medial school, that was scraping the bottom of the reserves, lol. Yet, the horns won by a mere 3 points, Matt and our offense faced a much better defense than Vince faced, by a long shot. If all our starters were in, Vince would have been crying about that as well.

Someone needs a hug.
I won’t pretend to remember many from your roster, but come on, you had the great Scott Ware. The USC defense was very good that year. Granted, the year before was better, but it was no slouch.
Me thinks you’re just bitter. Or a troll. Or both.

Does the fact that we hoisted the crystal football mean anything?
But, I guess not, because according to the BCS, scoring more points than another team does not mean you beat them. Anyway, if the team was so decimated, and the defense that we faced was so much better than the defense that VY faced, then how does pretty boy Leinart get off saying “the better team lost”?

When did he fold emotionally due to not winning the Heisman?
And what has he done to show that he’s “the biggest head case in the NFL”?
by burntorangehorn on Sep 22, 2009 2:11 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Apparently he folded emotionally when he rolled up 400+ yards against USC.

I hope Garrett Gilbert folds like a stack of towels on a weekly basis, in that case.

Hilarious!
He actually took the time to sign up for an account just to defend his precious USC, but he didn’t even do that! All he did was take a shot at Vince Young, who isn’t even a part of the discussion! LOL. Just like a kid — he has no defense, so instead he’ll just insult you with something else. Oh brotha.
In-VINCE-able.

USC
I think with the talent USC should have won..Washington did not win any games last year!!! Carroll got outcoached, period.

THey don't have a quarterback!
Barkley is terrible and Corp is atrocious. That doesn’t mean they won’t be good in a year or two, in fact they will both probably have fine careers (Corp wherever he transfers to after this season). But, right now, USC is not an elite team in college football with those two signal callers as green as they are. Luckily, in the Pac 10 they will probably coast to 10 wins.
If Cal doesn’t beat them this year, they never will.

agreed.
I can count the number of games Washington won last year on one hand fist.

USC has problems like this regularly...
Stanford, Oregon(s), UCLA, now Washington. The program is top notch. But they stumble against teams that perhaps they should never stumble against. I mean, if it based on draft picks, USC should never lose. But they are kids and kids make mistakes at times. The young QB situation is more problematic than USC fan wants to admit.

Based on draft picks, they should lose to tOSU

And Miami should’ve won the national championship almost every championship for about a solid decade.

How can any recruit who seriously wants a NC look at USC?
They were so loaded ‘03-’06 but with deep integrity issues. Carroll goes braindead year to year and consistantly lays an egg against subpar talent.
They are becoming the hoaxters of the NCAA. I don’t see Barkley as a USC kind of kid and I look for him to transfer before it’s all said and done. No jk. Urban Myers already has that road of sedition paved from L.A. to Gainseville.

At least they show up in bowls, even if they don’t show up against former cellar-dwellers like Stanford and Washington. tOSU and OUsux are the opposite.

No way Barkley transfers
You kidding me? A lock to be a 3 year starter and be fawned over by the national media daily for essentially doing nothing? The kid beat San Jose State and handed the ball off en route to a win against Ohio State and he was proclaimed the next Montana. No way does he give up a year to transfer. The kid will be a first rounder in three years once he declares after his junior year.

Far be it for me to defend USC...
…but I really hope this was all just a facetious statement. If not…
How can any recruit who seriously wants a NC look at USC?
Because…this decade, they’ve won an AP Championship + a BCS Championship, and also played for another one? Because the only other schools to have played for at least three championships this decade are Oklahoma and Ohio State? Because the only other schools to have won two championships this decade are Florida and LSU? Because of history (11 national titles) or tradition (7 Heismans)? Because they’re the flagship school of one of the biggest states (and of one of the biggest cities) in the United States? Because they churn out pro prospects thanks to a pro-style system that’s slowly dying in college football? Because they have a coach who really seems like one of college football’s “good guys”? Should I keep going?
They were so loaded ‘03-’06 but with deep integrity issues.
Uhh, no. As far as I can recall, they had two major incidents. One was Dwayne Jarrett living with Matt Leinart with Leinart’s dad paying the rent; that was cleared up as Jarrett repaid the Leinart family for staying. The other was the Reggie Bush saga, which as we all know was researched ad nauseum by Yahoo but has gotten no traction with the NCAA. Nevertheless, one bad apple does not constitute a rotten bushel.
Carroll goes braindead year to year and consistantly lays an egg against subpar talent.
Yes, he does. So do other preeminent teams in the country; for a clear example, witness Texas against K-State and A&M. In fact, the last two champions lost to Ole Miss, Kentucky, and Arkansas. Not exactly world beaters there.
They are becoming the hoaxters of the NCAA.
If by hoaxter you mean winning a conference championship and a BCS bowl every year, then damn, I wish we were hoaxters too.
I don’t see Barkley as a USC kind of kid and I look for him to transfer before it’s all said and done. No jk.
I don’t even know if you mean "no, just kidding" or "no, I’m not kidding." In any case, Barkley, in the words of Detective Greenly, is goin f*ckin nowhere. Dude is likely starting in USC for four years, likely a Heisman finalist, and likely going to see multiple Rose Bowls and/or Championship games. And yes, I would take a bet on this, simply based on the way he fixed his hair for his Ohio State postgame interview.
Urban Myers already has that road of sedition paved from L.A. to Gainseville.
Who is this Urban Myers you speak of? Is he related to <a href=">John Myers? Just kidding. Wasn’t the only transfer to make this trek was Emmanuel Moody (he of the "God tells me to do things" mindset)? Doesn’t Urban Meyer have quarterback of the future John Brantley at his disposal? I’m not sure what you’re trying to say here.
Sorry if I’m being overly critical. Since my brother went to USC (and got us tickets to the Greatest Game of All Time), I’m a little defensive of their program. I’m not above criticizing them for things they fail to do (like lay eggs following a big win), but I am critical of these willy-nilly posts that make USC out to be a hack program.

Mostly those are good points, but I’d like to point out that USC, a private school, is not a flagship university.

Don't even get me started
on leinart’s comment post national championship game. I went off just the other day about that when a friend and I were watching the USC/Ohio St game and Barkley said that the toughest part of his first game was “running up the tunnel to the locker room at halftime”. USC really does seem to put out some really nice guys, but for their lack of sportsmanship.

And I told my brother they were going to lose, too.
He was going to put a good chunk of change on USC, but I told him, don’t do it, this is the kind of game USC loses ALL THE TIME. And whaddaya know, they went and done it again. I’m a genius.

They usually lose to a low-end team with a gutsy quarterback and an unheralded-but-effective running game. I can’t remember which Oregon State QB beat ’em last season (Moeavo maybe?), but he toughed through it, and he played a lesser role than the previously-unknown ’Quizz did. But Locker definitely pulled together his guts and teammates, and Chris Polk was just strong enough carrying the ball to help drain the clock while clinging to that precious lead.

Stanford, with Tavita Pritchard (since replaced by wonderboy Luck) and Toby Gerhart, also fit this bill. I don’t remember who the fourth team was.

A dissentimg view
I’ve noticed that there are quite a few Longhorn fans who seem a bit too obsessed with a team which hasn’t defeated us in 42 years. I doubt this post would have ever appeared on a Horns-related site had the team in question been, say, Florida or Ohio State.
(That being said, I enjoy a well-written smackdown of an obnoxious troll as much as anyone.)

USC is neither here nor there
for me. I just remember Leinart’s poor-sportiness casting a brief shadow over the good memories of early 2006 and when I read McKnight’s comments I had a flash that it might be a systemic problem for USC rather than just a personal one for Leinart. I can’t vouch for the rest of these knuckleheads, though…
