1st Harris CFB Poll Released
Is the panel stacked SEC? Alabama's win over VT hurts us out of the gate. Just like we keep saying: Win and we're in.

One-loss teams ranked 6-9 really bothers me.
Especially when we hear the “regular season is a playoff.” Houston in 2-0 against the Big XII South, possibly the deepest division in the toughest conference in FBS, but is ranked behind 5 one-loss teams (including Penn St, who is two spots above undefeated Iowa???).
If you tell me close games don’t play well in the polls, LSU damn well doesn’t deserve #4 after a 9 point win over Washington and the 3 play stand Saturday against Mississippi State.
Even if you don’t think an undefeated team is better than a one-loss team, it seems like you can show the common sense to rank them respectfully until they lose.

This shows why "banning preseason polls" wouldn't make a dime's worth of difference
Every year around this time, you hear commentators bemoaning the fact that preseason polls lock teams into place, and that teams with better early season performances (think Miami before last week) remain behind other teams solely because of where the teams were ranked in the preseason. Therefore, the college world would be a better place if no polls were released until several weeks into the season.
The first Harris Poll of the season shows, once again, how dumb this idea is. Every single year of its existence, including this year, the first Harris Poll mirrors the conventional wisdom that’s already been established by the AP and the coaches’ poll, which of course more or less mirror each other.
Even if the first AP and coaches’ poll weren’t released until October, conventional wisdom would have already been established with an ESPN poll, and SI poll, and Sportsline poll, etc. Going into last week, Miami simply would not have been ranked #2 or #3 based on its early performances, despite being the flavor of the week, had the first AP poll of the season been last week.
