Pre-Game Game Day Open Thread
Thought we could use someplace to chat about the early games today. Theres some interesting games to kick things off.
http://espn.go.com/college-football/schedule
Ohio St and Navy looks to be a good one from the early going.
Tim Brewster's Minnesota ballclub is taking on the fighting Greg Paulus' of Syracuse.
Penn St is taking on an overmatched Akron team.
And, everyone's favorite new head coach, Lane Kiffin, is taking on Western KY.
Its great to have college ball back on Saturdays....

Ohio St
Defense looks rather uninspiring. Navy just went on a long 7 minute drive down the field, converting on several 3rd downs, throwing the ball only 3 or 4 times. Tied up 7-7 now, it looks like it might be a long day for the buckeyes if they cant figure out the triple option navy offense.
Ohio St.
Not having much problem moving down the field though. In the red zone now.
Get off your knees Greg, you're blowin' the game.
Navy get stop on 3rd down
Ohio St going to settle for 3. OSU 10 – Navy 7. 2:00 left in 1st Qt
Get off your knees Greg, you're blowin' the game.
im cursing myself
i took the suckeyes at -22 to cover. the way Navy’s offense ate up the clock in the first quarter and put up 7, its not looking promising now.
I think you're gonna be safe
OSU does this EVERY year in their opener. Sluggish in 1st quarter, then ends up winning by 40.
Get off your knees Greg, you're blowin' the game.
'throwing the ball only 3 or 4 times'
It puts a little tear in my eye to know that there are still offenses out there that are run-dominant.
Anyone have any idea why it’s mostly the Services that play this style? Does there come a time when so many teams are running the spread that everything just reverts to smashmouth running?
Navy
had a game last year where they didnt throw the ball even once. I think it may have been against SMU.
The service academies are to small
up front to really have any kind of pass protection. So they make up for it by just trying to wear you out and smash the ball down your throat. I will say this for the academies, they are by far the best conditioned teams in the country.

That’s right. There are weight standards, and a guy can’t conform to weight standards and still have what’s considered effective lineman size. I believe the USAFA and USNA are more flexible on weight than USMA is, which didn’t really surprise me to hear, as flexibility never has been the army’s strong suit, but none of them really let a kid build toward 300lbs. Plus they don’t get those high-end recruits anymore, and they also have far more responsibilities in their daily routines than football players at any other school.
by burntorangehorn on Sep 5, 2009 12:53 PM CDT up reply actions
Another factor is that defenses just don't have much experience with wishbone/triple option offenses anymore.
Aside from the first game, most opponents have a short week to prepare for a triple option, which gives a solid advantage of the service teams.
Side note...
Rod Wright cut today by the Dolphins
Northern Iowa is giving Iowa
all kinds of problems right now. Up 10-3 with only about a minute left in the first half.
The next up and coming Longhorns QB!
disappointing
OSU is a little underwhelming at this point. The offensive line looks mediocre, struggling to pick up Navy’s outside rushers. Good thing Pryor is mobile.
I think they’re going to struggle next week with USC.
Yeah as much as I hate the Trojans
I am just not sure that OSU is going to be able to win that game. I know it is at home, but I will say this about Pete Carroll his team knows how to win. Fortunately for all of us Trojan haters, USC gets owned by somebody in their conference.

Syracuse
Paulus looks good for the Orangemen. he looks mechanically really solid…not making mistakes, just taking what the defense has given him.
Dont look now, but the Orange have just taken a 20-14 lead with about a minute left in the half.
I know this has probably been asked a million times already but does anyone know any way for someone out of area (Pennsylvania) to watch this game tonight
You can get it on PPV if you have DirecTV
or you can get on Texassports.com and keep up with it on Gametracker. Not to mention there will be plenty of guys on here tonight to give play by play.

there are 2 chapters of Texas Exes in PA
one is in Philly, and the other is in western PA. I dont know if you are close to either of those, but there is a good bet that both chapters have sponsor bars where they watch the game at and they have already purchased the game. Thats what I am doing here in Dallas. see the link below and scroll down to the PA section. I believe it shows both having a website link.
http://www.texasexes.org/chapters/find_chapter.asp
If this isnt possible, then there is a chance the game will be streamed online at www.justin.tv Its not a guarantee, but someone that has the PPV feed may end up streaming it. just go to the website, type in “Texas” or “longhorns” in the search page around game time and see if any streaming feeds pop up. If you check in the game-day thread later tonight, someone likely will have posted a streaming link if one exists.
Outside of that, you can follow on the gametracker or find the radio link and listen along.
my bad
i just checked both of those PA texas exes links and it appears that neither has a sponsor bar televising the game. you may be SOL, short of paying the $40 bones for the game on your own, or watching online if a streaming link pops up.
According to the guys at halftime on ESPN
Sam Bradford scored 70 gajillion touchdowns last year. I am just curious how many of the td’s came while classless bob was running up the score.
The next up and coming Longhorns QB!
they looked sloppy early on though with 2 turnovers
i wouldnt be surprised if that team is undisciplined all year long, much like their young head coach.
I dont know
Their defense is all over the place and one of the TO was a tipped ball. Crompton has looked pretty good though. Throwing more to spots and looks better than last year.
I understand it is Western Kentucky, but they didnt move the ball this well all year last year.
The "Big Bang" was actually a Will Muschamp chestbump......with the Earth!
Wow
Navy driving and controlling the clock in the 3rd Quarter.
Get off your knees Greg, you're blowin' the game.
Middies are working on making a game of it.
Liberty is pushing back against WVU. That’d be a huge embarrassment for the Big East and WVU. It’s still a little bit hard to root for Liberty, though.
TOUCHDOWN MIDDIES!
Thanks for putting up thread
I’m in Oregon for a wedding. Haven’t been sucker-punched yet, but I didn’t get a chance to do this week’s TV schedule.

by burntorangehorn on Sep 5, 2009 1:57 PM CDT up reply actions
Think OSU was might have been peekeing just
a little bit to next week. Either Tressell is going to have them prepared for next week or they are going to get blown out by USC.
The next up and coming Longhorns QB!
Remember last season
They looked bad against Ohio, and then they got thrashed by USC. It might be the same thing, except this time it’s at the Horseshoe. That’s the ONLY reason why I think OSU has a chance.

He’s fine at running, but the kid can’t read the field for sour apples. That pick was ridiculous, and his escape ability was pretty much all he had going for him today.

I am going against Okie Lite
I could care less about that whole conference vs. conference stuff, that is the game that scares me the most on the entire schedule. I do not want a repeat of what happened in Lubbock last year. I think them getting beat by Georgia at home will be a good start.
