Getting Jumped in the Polls
Given the huge margin of victory that No. 4 USC (53 points vs. 39 points for Texas) had as well as the higher quality of opponent (San Jose St vs Louisiana-Monroe), is it possible USC jumps us in the polls?
Similarly, given No. 5 Alabama's win over No. 7 Virginia Tech, is it possible Alabama jumps us in the polls?
Finally, I disagree that OU's loss is inconsequential. If there are more than two undefeated teams -- or no undefeated teams and multiple one loss teams -- quality of competition will be critical, in which case a lightly regarded OU (and by extension Big 12) may again leave us outside looking in.

I think they could both jump us (USC and Bama), but...
It doesn’t matter at all. Alabama can beat ACC teams all they want .. they’re going to drop a game or two in SEC play. USC is going to either get beaten by Cal, or look really bad beating them.
IMHO, I think Alabama deserves to be ranked ahead of us, and probably Florida too, they have a win over a good team on their resume. I think OSU should also move into the top 3 for their win against Georgia.
Neither of those things will happen though, because of the tremendous amount of inertia held by teams ranked highly (this is one of the biggest problems of the “poll” systems — perceptions change very slowly).

Disagree on OSU
beating the #15 team at home doesn’t justify moving up 6 spots from #9 to #3. Oh well, they can enjoy being ranked higher than OU.

Additionally
I don’t think Georgia finishes in the top 25 this year, which in the end will dilute the impact of this one for Okie Lite.

Maybe in the BCS rankings, but the immediacy of the effect in the polls will be a major boon for them right now, and that dictates the future course of their ranking.
IMO the top four are pretty solid: Florida, Texas, USC, and Alabama. The order is slightly arguable, but I think that’s it, and I think that’s the clear-cut top four. #5 is up for debate, and OSU might have an argument. They, Ole Miss, and Penn State all have good shots at jumping the Buckeyes, and while I think they all should, I don’t think all three will.
If I were ranking, I’d put it like this:
1. Florida
2. Texas
3. USC
4. Alabama
5. Oklahoma State
6. Mississippi
7. Oklahoma
8. Penn State
9. Ohio State
10. Cal
11. Boise State
12. LSU
13. Virginia Tech
14. Georgia Tech
15. TCU

VT
I think everyone knows that VT is overrated ever year. I doubt Alabama will jump Texas. USC might, but I doubt it.

There is no Guarantee USC Will Beat tOSU
Sure, tOSU looked awful against Navy, but let’s face it, they were already looking to next week’s game with USC. Everyone knows it. And with such a close win on their butts, they’ll come out against USC full tilt. I actually think tOSU will win that game.

If you recall
Ohio St. also had a poor showing in their game last year before they played USC. The “looking forward to next week” excuse can’t fly anymore.

I have bo doubt that USC will win big
OSU looked young and OVERRATED.

what does that say about us barely beating them in the Fiesta Bowl then.

They have basically the same team coming back.
I’m just playing devils advocate here. I know they say the voters only base what happens in the current season. Somehow I think the bowls get thrown in for everybody but Oklahoma. lol

Not even close to the same team. They lost their three best players from last year (Wells, Jenkins, and Laurinaitis), plus Marcus Freeman, Alex Boone, Donald Washington, both their starting receivers, and I believe four other starters (for a total of twelve lost) out of their starting 24. Pryor is probably the only guy on that team most college football fans could name right now.

Gotcha! I forgot about Laurinaitis
He is one heck of a player. I can’t admit when I’m wrong. lol

It says Malcolm Jenkins, Brian Robiskie, Chris Wells, etc. were pretty darn good football players.

That's Exactly What USC Will be Thinking Coming In...
…expect an ambush.
by iamjackburton on Sep 7, 2009 8:58 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
OU's loss is fresh now....
but will be long forgotten in a month, especially if they begin winning in typical fashion (not a given, though). If USC puts OSU out of it’s misery already, then they will likely get pushed ahead of Texas then, anyway. If not, they drop. Bama will get rolled at one point. I’m not concerned about that.

Why do you assume that San Jose St. is better than ULM?
What is your basis for regarding San Jose St. as a higher quality opponent? Me? I’d put money on the boys from Louisiana who couldn’t make it in the SEC over the boys from Cali who couldn’t make it in the Pac-10. At worst (for us), it’s a wash. At best, ULM is not that bad and SJS is awful. Either way, that won’t be evident for weeks and shouldn’t affect poll voting after week 1.
Friends may come and go, but enemies accumulate.

I just posted on the exact same topic
haha I just joined the site, spent about 2 hours writing a post, posted it just now, then realized you posted the exact same question regarding USC. I think it is possible USC jumps Texas, simply due to the media lovefest that happens in favor of USC whenever they are winning games.

this may sound weird but...
I almost hope someone like USC or Ohio St. jumps over us…if nothing else it give this team even more motivation to absolutely destroy every team they play, otherwise how hard is it to get jacked up to play Wyoming…we need to be frothing at the mouth each and every game this year and win out regardless of whether OU is still a ‘quality’ opponent come Red River Shootout time [and yes I like to use the old rivalry terminology, the new one stinks!]

Who cares? As long as we win out we will go to the Natl Champ game
this same question gets brung up year after year, and as long as the BCS is around, it will continue to be brought up

This is why...
college football is such a beatdown. One week in and everyone is already worried about who might be jumping who in the polls.
What a waste.

If we go undefeated
The media will make sure we’re in the NC game. Let’s just win every game.
If you're so sure of what it ain't, how about telling us what it am!

Whose power rankings and why do you care?
The only two polls that count right now are the coaches and the AP. One for their BCS implications and the other for that split championship business that some people care about for some reason. Both can be found here.

Both the AP and Coaches by the way
Have us more entrenched* in the #2 spot now than we were last week.
*Meaning, we have a larger margin of points above the #3 team than we did last week.
