This article touches on something that I had on my mind for at least a couple of weeks now. Is Marquis Goodwin the fastest Longhorn or is it the newly proven DJ Monroe? On PS3, I've changed Goodwin's speed to 99, and Monroe's to 98....why exactly, I dont know. Chiles used to challenge anybody on the team to a foot race after practice but judging from this article, he no longer wants that. Suggestions?

What a delightful debate to ponder

Let’s stick ’em both back there to return kicks. Any nickname suggestions for the duo?

You ain't hurt.

I like it.

It’s catchy… and catchy.

Best Thing

Is that they’re both young. Coming up with a nickname is going to take some time though!

I don’t think there’s any question that it’s Goodwin. Monroe and Hales are blazing-fast, but Goodwin’s the one with the golden spikes.

by burntorangehorn on Sep 8, 2009 10:24 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Also, there’s the consideration of pads. Who can run fastest in spikes is a different issue from who can run fastest in gameday gear.

by burntorangehorn on Sep 8, 2009 10:25 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Two points

1. There’s speed. And there’s football speed. If speed is all there was to it, a lot of track guys could make a lot of NFL dough.

2. I wonder what it is about the Longhorns’ training and conditioning that takes high school blurs and turns them into college plodders. Chiles and Cosby are two recent examples. I guess maybe the college guys get hit so hard and so soon after the snap or the reception that they have to bulk up the legs and even the upper bodies and, poof, goodbye breakaway speed. Necessary tradeoff, I suppose.

Chiles

I think a lot of the problem with him was just extra bad weight from not doing enough conditioning as a quarterback. We’ll see this year if he seems as fast as he was in high school, but I think the loss of 15 pounds should really help in that regard.

I have definitely heard that criticism about the Longhorn S&C program and it’s something that I wonder about. One thing about Mad Dog is that he seems to be respected amongst his peers, for whatever that is worth. Something to keep an eye on at least.

by GhostofBigRoy on Sep 8, 2009 10:55 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not a single....

…… future Longhorn draft pick has returned to Mad Dog for pre-combine, pre-draft training. Speaks volumns! Lack of speed work is certainly to blame.

How common is it that potential draft picks do?

The existence of “Institutes” that do nothing but train players for the NFL Draft shows that virtually no university prepares their players for the combine.

There’s a difference between training for the draft and training for football. Elite 40 yd times have a lot more to do with getting off the blocks than overall speed.

I Would Defend Mad Dog

To me – who is a very motivational, passionate S&C coach that gets alot out of his players. While there will be many detractors – I challenge anyone to find as many examples of 3 Star guys just becoming beasts and All Americans. Orakpo, Colt, Achos – just too many for him not to be a great coach.

by realmccoy on Sep 10, 2009 10:07 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

To correct you....

….Orakpo and Colt were 4-star recruits. The Achos were from a small, private school playing weak competition causing teams to be a bit cautious. Sam Acho’s offer list reads more like that of a 4-star recruit – Texas, Nebraska, OU, OU-Lite and USC. Emmanuel had a brother at Texas. Programs pretty much conceded him to Texas and to prove them correct, he commited a full year early.

from what service?

I could’ve swore that I’ve heard was a 3-star recruit like Sam Bradford

Monroe ran a 10.08 in high school

and Goodwin’s fastest time is 10.38, or at least that’s what he ran at the Texas Relays. As undeniably fast as Goodwin is, I think his strength as a track athlete is really in the long jump and triple jump. I’m having trouble finding verification for my quoted Monroe time, but I see other people listing it on the Shaggy Bevo boards. Either way, both are incredibly fast and, on the football field, once you get to that type of speed you’re probably the fastest guy on the field.

by GhostofBigRoy on Sep 8, 2009 10:53 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

A guy’s time will differ quite a bit from meet to meet, in my experience. Goodwin may have run just a 10.37 at the Texas Relays, but you can see a reference to a Monroe 10.5 in the 100m here: http://www.40acressports.com/category/track/

If you want to see the fastest fully-automatic time (the only legitimate kind) Monroe ran in 2008, it’s here: http://www.texastrack.com/Track%202008/08_hs_top_10.htm

That same year, as a junior, Goodwin had a faster 100m, as you can see on the same link. I’m not sure the ShaggyBevo people are comparing permissible times.

by burntorangehorn on Sep 8, 2009 11:02 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hmm, I’m not finding a single legitimate source that says that Monroe ran a 10.08. Urban legend, maybe?

by burntorangehorn on Sep 8, 2009 11:04 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The original source of that time

is Monroe himself. I’ve read articles quoting him. Cant find the link though, sorry.

Well in that case

According to me, I got something that is 10.08 too.

10.08

I didn’t know the 60 yard sprint was still contested.

by hunghorn on Sep 10, 2009 11:15 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

DJ ran a 10.08 in at his Angleton High Parnell Relays…. but it was ruled as “wind aided”……. He ran in the 10.3’s a few times…. I saw this with my own eyes…. There was a kid named W. Prevoset that use to push him… but that was his only comp in high school… Goodwin is fast but I dont thing he is faster than Monroe….

by Greatness31 on Oct 1, 2009 2:33 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

During his time at the World Junior meet, Goodwin’s times and long jump were discussed and reported by track people. It’s all public knowledge, obviously.

His long jump numbers are significant. His 100 times are not.

by utexex on Sep 8, 2009 11:24 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

The LJ and TJ are as relevant to the 40yd. as the 100m is, in all truth.

by burntorangehorn on Sep 8, 2009 11:39 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Also, just because Goodwin’s 100m time is significant doesn’t mean that Monroe’s is. Neither a 10.41 nor a 10.39 is significant, at least not in the same respect that Goodwin’s field event abilities are significant. Certainly neither of them is quite Jamaal Charles when it comes to the 100m.

by burntorangehorn on Sep 8, 2009 11:46 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Charles was the fastest player I've ever seen in a Longhorns uniform

His track speed translated well into football, and there wasn’t a soul in the entire country who could catch him if they fell behind.

Reminds me of Lam Jones

And it makes me want to see some old film, because its stated all over the Web that Jones was a lot of people’s fastest Horn in a uniform.

As a young reporter

I covered Johnny Lam during his senior track season. He was truly world-class for speed (Olympic gold in the sprint relay; Olympic 100-meter alternate). On the field, Fred Akers never quite figured out how to take advantage of that unique skill. Course, that was in the tailback-oriented days, Texas rarely threw deep, and Jones’ kick return skill was blunted by teams not kicking to him. He never particularly bulked up, which may have led to his limited NFL success (fifth player drafted, I believe).

To the present: I’d hope Mack or GD has enough sway with Mad Dog to limit the weights and bulk and let Goodwin, Monroe, Hales, others to come stay lean. And keep that burst. This will limit between-the-hashes opportunities (heavy contact areas) — to me, that’s a good trade-off to retaining blur-speed for four seasons.

Who's the fastest longhorn?

How fast can a cow run?

I think Bevo’s faster than either of them.

by notsofst on Sep 9, 2009 2:56 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

The story on that is hillarious.

Thank you.

A very strange true story:
Earlier this year (3 yrs ago), the dazed crew of a Japanese trawler were plucked of the Sea of Japan clinging to the wreckage of their sunken ship. Their rescue, however, was followed by immediate imprisonment once authorities questioned the sailors on their ship’s loss. To a man they claimed that a cow, falling out of a clear blue sky, had struck the trawler amidships, shattering its hull and sinking the vessel within minutes.

They remained in prison for several weeks, until the Russian Air Force reluctantly informed Japanese authorities that the crew of one of its cargo planes had apparently stolen a cow wandering at the edge of a Siberian airfield, forced the cow into the plane’s hold and hastily taken off for home. Unprepared for live cargo, the Russian crew was ill-equipped to manage a now rampaging cow within its hold. To save the aircraft and themselves, they shoved the animal out of the cargo hold as they crossed the Sea of Japan at an altitude of 30,000 feet.
